We summoned it with our malice. We made it grow by the strength of our hatred. We let it stay because we can’t change our very natures. Nothing can force humans to commit acts of evil, only endow us with powers to indulge in our own sadistic proclivities. It’s all around us, on every news channel and in every paper. The vile nature of man is evident. Some of us kill our parents and forsake our children, greed is our creed and instant gratification our pastime. There is no God; there is no heaven or hell. There is only the ancient darkness and the evil of man. Hope is fleeting and grace is no longer in our grasp. We gave the darkness a form and a realm of its own. It wishes to feed upon us but now some parts of it want more. Humankind has taught it to relish in the suffering of others in a way only humans can. Enter Noctum, an inner tale of survival horror. There is nothing more evil than your fellow man.

Noctum is a role-playing game of dark horror set it our day and age. It delves into subjects some might find disturbing and it is exclusively designed for adult players.

In this complete role-playing game you will find the following features and much more.

  • A Fight or Flight monitor and rules to keep track of the characters’ fear and adrenaline and the changed stats that go with them.
  • An in-depth system dealing with mental stress, depression and an array of mental disorders; this includes rules that allow a character skilled in psychology to help or break another individual.
  • Information on serial killers and how to go about profiling them.
  • Several harrowing weaknesses that define the very characters you play.
  • Forty-five detailed NPCs and unique minions of darkness. Fill in the blank autopsy reports to create horrific handouts. Illustrating how the victims of these creatures have been slaughtered will surely spice up any horror story.
  • Rules concerning sect indoctrination and how you can deprogram members of sects in order to free them from their slavery.
  • Information and rules, which let characters possess paranormal and magical abilities, defining black, white, grey and dark magic. This mechanic uses the seven aspects cards in order to determine whether a character keeps his power under control or gives way to his inner demons.
  • A system that lets you handle curses, possession and stains of evil that may jump from one individual to another by touch alone.
  • Several stereotypes that players may use to create unique characters.

Just found this by accident, looks really neat, strange that there is literally nothing on the internet aside from a review on rpg net (whose opinions I really don't care about), what happened to this company? Seemed really promising.

I did a review review of it. I think we mention something about what happened in the video (as far as I know the author moved on to videogames): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1eQdEnzoxE&list=PLugGS1ZQl8ItoIh3GxB97aqTl4VSXM3oz&index=2&t=18s

Awesome game. If you can forget the rather unfortunate old cover, which seems to have had a negative & unjustifiable impacte on some of the old reviews, one of the best horror RPGs i have ever seen lies in wait for you. Great NewStoryteller-like system with some awesome influence from GUMSHOE. Terrifying modern setting with a very original bestiary, reminding me of the great Book of Unremitting Horror.
Mr Thomas definitely should write more for his own games Noctum and Cold & Dark (which also is a great game by the way). Buy this!

Question: I have the Swedish 2:nd edition, which clocks in at 375 pages, and this later English edition is just 311 pages? What changes have been made to account for the fewer pages? According to a rpg.net review the main thing that's changed is that the setting's been moved from Sweden to an American locale. Surely that alone can't explain the difference in page count (...perhaps smaller print, larger page size, less art)?

And seeing as this translation's been 9 years in the making, are there any more substantial revisions to warrant why owners of the 2006 Swedish edition should buy also this 2015 English edition?

This is actually the fourth edition all in all. The first English version was released back in 2009. This latest Full Corpse edition that is now available uses the basic same system as Cold & Dark. Fonts, font size, writing style and layout can also account for the difference in page count to a certain degree.

Compared to the Swedish edition this is quite different. It comes with an investigation mechanic and revised magic/psychic power system. Some creatures have been removed and a bunch (more based on human tragedy) have been added in the English edition, which also include creature art not featured in the Swedish version.

So in short. If you only have the Swedish version I'd recommend buying the Full Corpse edition. If you have the first English edition I only recommend buying the Full Corpse edition of Noctum if you prefer the new rules over the old ones.

Hope this helps.

It is the basic same rules. In Full Corpse has the same amount of attributes and such. There is also the inclusion of an investigative system and a different type of mental health tracking system.

Why is Noctum Full Corpse edition being sold as a full color premium print?

The Book Itself is in Black and White with only a brown stain on the example character on page 86

The only color pages in this Book are the ads for other products in the back...

Hi there, and sorry for the late reply.
It has to do with the paper quality. At first I ordered a printing proof in BW but the paper quality made the print basically bleed through the pages. The only way to up the quality (that I found) was to print it as color. This allowed the selection of premium paper which is thicker and of a better quality. Unfortunately the original art is in BW. Let me know if you have more questions.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
