Hobomancer Labor Day Sale!

You might not think of hobos as playing a role in the labor movement, but the original meaning of the word “hobo” was “one who travels to work.” This differentiated them from tramps (who travelled but did not work) and bums (who neither travelled nor worked). There was even a hobo union--the Tourist Union #63--founded in part to distinguish hobos looking for honest work from run-of-the-mill vagrants. Many hobos were also members of more traditional unions (especially the International Workers of the World). When workers went on strike, it was common for workers (hobo or not) to hop a train and “boom” into town, showing support for their fellow workers and swelling the strike’s numbers so that jailing every striker would be prohibitively expensive for the local government. To celebrate the role that hobos played in the labor movement, we’re offering 25% off the Ennie Award-winning Hobomancer RPG, the Hobomancer Companion, and Suicide’s Run: A Tale of the Hobomancers PDFs from now until September 12.

Among the countless hobos who ride the rails looking for work in 1930s America, there exists a secret society of magicians known as the hobomancers. The hobomancers face all the same problems as rank-and-file hobos—hunger, mean-spirited railway bulls, bad hooch—but they must also concern themselves with defending reality as we know it. If the hobomancers don’t ride the rails and keep the songlines of the world in balance, dark magic will run rampant, monsters will ravage the land, and the very laws of nature will collapse.

Hobomancer is an ENnie Award-winning role-playing game, designed for use with the QAGS Second Edition rules, which combines American history, folklore, and pulp fiction into a thick, rich Mulligan stew of adventure. This preview edition includes the first two chapters of the PDF in their entirety as well as samples monsters, characters, and other bits and pieces from later chapters of the complete book.

Hobomancer features both period photographs and original illustrations by Joshua LH Burnett, Jeffrey Johnson, Juan Navarro, and Chris Newman.

Ride the rails. Have more fun!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
