Other Dust

The world is an open grave.

Green glass plains and trinitite pearls necklace the throats of torn cities. Prismatic jungles heave with nanite-infested life, thick with twisted bodies and fever-hot madness. The ancient towers of Old Terra are cast down into the mire and the stars above no longer send their ships of steel and burning light.

Humanity has been reduced to struggling enclaves and fugitive tribes. Left to scavenge the bones of their former glory, mankind yet fights the New Earth with steel, salvage, and a burning defiance. If the motherworld means to end her children, she’s going to need a bigger apocalypse.

Other Dust is a stand-alone, fully-compatible companion game to the free Stars Without Number sci-fi RPG. Within its pages savage mutants, crazed psychic overlords, runaway war machines and the relentless decay of a shattered world all conspire to snuff the last few embers of humanity. Yet heroes remain among the scattered survivors, and their courage and will to defy the coming night might yet save their people from a waiting doom. Use the tools this book provides to rebuild societies, reforge their ancient bonds, and bring a new dawn to a thousand points of night!

Inside, youll find...

  • Smooth old-school rules for rolling up and running the intrepid wasteland warriors and fierce avengers of a broken world. Fully compatible with Stars Without Number classes and play, too!
  • 150+ pages of GM tools, techniques, and resources for building and running a sandbox post-apocalyptic campaign. If you liked it in Stars Without Number, you'll find it in here.
  • Rules for running groups and enclaves in the radioactive wasteland, with concrete tools to help players save or doom the hard-pressed people around them. Found your own or crush someone else's!
  • Easy-pull techniques and resources, system-neutral for quick transplantation into your own campaigns or favorite systems.

Plus!

Grab the free intro adventure Grandfather's Rain to have something piping-hot for play this very evening!

On page 176 you have essentially an enclave sheet with all the relevant stuff associated with it. What is Food, Influence, Morale, Security, Tech? What does Tier mean? What is Prog.? What is Ruin Sources? Is all this explained in the Group chapter?

This game needs an update to a revised edition with more mutations, more character abilities, ascending AC, etc.

I agree. I would purchase it if those changes were made, especially ascending AC.

Great game. I bought the pdf without looking at how great a price the pod is. Do you offer credit for POD purchase for the pdf I just bought?

In character creation one of the steps is choosing languages but there's no list of languages or indication that you just choose English etc...
What was intended here?

I would say that the best course of action is to ask your GM what languages are in their game. If you are the GM, then its up to you to decide just how important languages are in your game.

This is a standalone setting with full rules. The connection with Stars Without Number is only setting-wise : you play on Earth, within the SWN universe, but that's it. If you never want to leave the surface, nothing is stopping you.

Any chance to get Other Dust themed tie-ins with An Echo, Resounding? Looking to run a post-apocalyptic Fallout campaign with AER for faction-level play.

Bought Other Dust anyway on the strength of its reviews, and found the Groups section is very similar to An Echo, Resounding's domain mechanics. Instead of being a port, though, they're more tailored to the needs of a post-apocalyptic campaign. Awesome!

OMG Amazing spin-off. I really would like to see supplements for this game. Other Dust makes Gamma World, Mad Max, and Fallout type games a fun alternative to Stars Without Number. There is a tie-in if you can stand it (and it's easily discarded if you don't) to SWN in the timeline/history. It is the same SWN-default universe only earlier on the timeline.

So, I've been studying the Groups and Enclaves section and I can't seem to find any reference to this, but why would a group ever take any of the Tech Level perks? What is the mechanical benefit of doing so?

How does this setting approach magic?

I'm tardy in noticing this question, but there's no conventional magic in this setting. Even the psychic powers are assumed to be the province of lunatic NPCs. Even so, if you if you want PCs to have them you can use the free Stars Without Number RPG to import the Psychic class. Since it uses traditional OSR mechanics, you can also import spellcasting classes from other old-school games with minimal tweaking, if you want to mix things up.

An even later reply than Kevin's, you can also now use the Codex of the Black Sun, which has magic rules for Stars Without Number. I'm really starting to love the whole Crawford-verse of interconnected games!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
