The simplest definition of a geisha is a female hostess who is a non-sexual companion and master of several traditional Japanese art forms. Of course, every single word of the previous sentence has its caveats and exceptions. Today’s geisha inhabit a separate, parallel reality called the karyukai or “flower and willow world” a subculture with its own stately pace and strange customs which recall an earlier period in history.
