The Stars Were Never Meant For Us

2159 AD. It is a good time to be alive. The nations of Earth still exist, but they have become more civilized, and humanity has expanded into the rest of our solar system. But, alas, it is not to be our time. Something approaches, a thing on an orbit from far away. Seemingly a mysterious shard of dark matter, this object is known in obscure prophecy as the Chthonian Star. It is awakening things long thought lost or dead, things that have slumbered awaiting its return. The Unified World Council sends out special teams of sanctioned Wardens, whose job it is to ascertain the new threats to human life, to learn everything they can about them, and fight them wherever they are found.

The Void is an original Lovecraftian hard sci-fi horror setting.

The Void Core:

  • Designed with accessibility in mind. A short overview and introductory adventure can have you playing within an hour.
  • Uses simple but satisfying d6 dice pool mechanics.
  • Introduces exciting new rules to ratchet up the survival horror.
  • Gives Characters many options for diversity and customization.
  • Provides an exploration of our fully colonized solar system in the near future – and the things that threaten it.
  • Created by the award-winning team that brought you CthulhuTech.

Seriously? Pay What You Want?

Imagination is powerful. To quote Albert Einstein, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” Well said.

We believe in the power of imagination and how it creates wonder and inspiration. Roleplaying games are one of the few things that can do what they do. Some might say they are the last frontier for wild imagination and creativity. We certainly believe so. That’s why we make roleplaying games – to help make that possible.

Making roleplaying games the way we have hasn’t helped us spark imagination the way we’d hoped. We want to try something different.

First, we’re adopting the Creative Commons license, so that you can contribute to the game in a meaningful way. That way, we can support you in your awesome ideas and help you get them out to your fellow players.

Then, we’re going to give away electronic copies of the core book for free. We’ve all bought games that didn’t end up working out for us. That’s why we’re giving this to you for free – so that you can figure out if you like the game before you decide to spend money on it.

If you like The Void and you play it, we’re going to put out a bunch of cool material at very reasonable prices. We’re going to do it buffet-style, so you can pick and choose what works best for you and your group. Buying these supplements supports us making more cool material, along with the rest of your fellow players.

After all, life’s too short to waste time and money on games you don’t like.

I was wondering how similar the game mechanic in The Void is to Mongoose Traveller 1st Ed? Or any Traveller variant.

It's free, so why not just look for yourself?

Hello, I was wondering if there are any options for cybernetics in one of the books?

I m guessing they are easily done with Talents / Qualities...

Which Creative Commons license is this game adopting? I would like to translate it to Chinese in the future but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do so as I have no idea with the license adopted.

Are there new books coming out? I remember talk of an equipment and weapons guide but haven't seen any indication that books are still being developed and published.

Question about Talents. How many do you choose at character creation and can you gain/earn more? I ask because the Talent section uses plurals and word choice that to me seems as if you get or can obtain additional Talents.

by expanding the character sheet (in the manual) it looks blurry.
I needed to download the sheet separately.

You should review that.

Now, to read.
If I like it, I will return with my money.

Does ANYONE understands the skill cost system? How much does it costs to have a skill at 1? And at 2? Worse, at 3? I know that it costs you 2 points to buy a skill from 3 to 4, and that it costs 3 points to buy a skill from 4 to 5, but... What about level 1, 2 and 3? How much do they cost?!

Page 109 - Learn a New Skill

"Once you have done that [spent time studying or training], spend 1 Advance and you get the Skill at 1."

Page 109 - Improving an Existing Skill

"You must improve your Attributes incrementally, so you can't just skip from an 2 to a 4 without also increasing to 3 in between."

Everything you want to know is on pages 108 and 109. You can't buy a new skill at 2 or 3; you must start at 1 and increase them incrementally.

Kevin, thank you for taking the time to answer me, but my doubt wasn't about getting NEW skills, it was about getting the levels for your PRIMARY skills, (depending on your character being an Enforcer, Investigator or Researcher). The Enforcer, for an instance, has on the skills section: "For your primary specialty, distribute 30 points among the following Skills. If you choose to purchase a Skill at 4, it will cost you 2 points from 3 to 4. If you choose to purchase a Skill at 5, it will cost you 3 points from 4 to 5".

That means that EVERY skill I get for my Enforcer from his list (page 86) will be at either level 4 or 5 (depending on how I spend his 30 points of primary skills)? Can't I choose a skill at 3? Or lesser? That's what I don't get.

There is a table on pg 109, which in combination with the 'learn a new skill' section gives:
From 0 to 1 costs 1
From 1 to 2 costs 1
From 2 to 3 costs 2
From 3 to 4 costs 2
From 4 to 5 costs 3

Current web-address for Wildfire is "www.wildfirellc.com" & even that is just a placeholder site for the "Coming soon" new site.

Is there going to be a POD version? I'd rather have that, than a spiral bound copy from Kinko's...

Wondering if I have an outdated PDF, the enforcer NPC health seemed wrong with his toughness/2 quality. Also, by the description of toughness it seems either the NPC wound boxes are incorrect or the total in the quality description is incorrect. Anyone able to shed some light on this? Is this a dead game already?

I recently purchased several of The Void products and am very excited to run a campaign with it. I bought the book versions of the ones I could. There was a note, however, saying I could order a book version of the core rules? How would I go about doing that?

Change the format in the search to book format. I had to look, didn't realize they were selling the printed versions here either.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
