Pits & Perils

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Pits & Perils is an "original" old-school role-playing game.  One modeled after the numerous war games-turned-fantasy RPG campaigns that proliferated during the early 1970s.  Back then, it was crappy little rule books typed in someone's basement.  Well, those days are back!

Pits & Perils has:

Classic character types, but with a twist (check out a FULL preview of the character rules on this page).

Extremely simple mechanics (perhaps the simplest ever) that can be tailored to nearly any situation.  Most of what the players do is decision-making, exploration, and role-playing.  The rules don't even try to do this for you.  And you know what? They shouldn't!

Nearly 100 monsters to fight and 200 magic items to win and wield.  All of them fully explained.  That's a lot for an 80-page rule book!

An amateur look and feel that captures the way things used to be. In those days, each group had its own homemade rules based on word of mouth and the historical war games they were already playing.  Pits & Perils is designed in this spirit.

Pits & Perils is NOT a retro-clone, but an original system designed for those who want an old-school experience without excessive rules.  This book contains everything needed to get started, including how to create a character, build a dungeon, and run a campaign in a world where magic still works and monsters are real. So live and die by the sword. Or magic, if you prefer. Dark dungeons await...

Played 3 sessions of Pits and Perils with a 4th next week. 5 players all enjoying the system and it's great to DM. Old school in the sense of the DM has to be prepared to make rulings... not rely on rules. This keeps everything moving along.

Fast combat leaves more time for the good stuff... exploration of the unknown!

Hey Jeremy!

We corrected some minor (and limited) typographical errors. Nothing that affects game play in any way, but we thought the timing was right.

Anyway, we did it to coincide with the release of Fear! Fire! Foes!, the first supplement to Pits & Perils coming out next week...

Fear! Fire! Foes! has:

Variant character classes, like the eastern monk and psychic savant. Or become an elven fighter and combine magic with deadly combat maneuvers.

New equipment, including healing herbs and holy oils.

Advancement to level 15, giving players time to experience higher level adventures!

Powerful new spells. Master shape shifting and create vivid illusions - or wield fire and ice bolts against an array of terrifying new enemies.

Combat moves, like stunning blocks and parries, that make combat dynamic while preserving the simplicity of the basic game. Fighting has never been deadlier...

Awesome...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
