Shadows and Light

The trees part before you, revealing the crumbling walls of the ruined keep. Only hours ago, you set off after the marauding orc band responsible for the destruction of the temple of Freya and the theft of its sacred crucible. But something else waits for you within the ruined walls — something darker and far more sinister, something that has hidden from the light for ages.

A Hero's Quest

The first in a series of D20 adventures by Necromancer Games, The Crucible of Freya is a challenging introductory adventure for any fantasy campaign. Detailing the village of Fairhill, the surrounding wilderness, and a nearby ruined keep, as well as the dungeon levels beneath, this adventure module provides all the material a DM needs to start his or her new Third Edition campaign. Will your characters learn what dark forces are behind the orc raids?

A Third Edition adventure for four to six characters of levels 1–2

A great, old-school D&D adventure that pairs well with Rappan Athuk or works well as a standalone adventure. While it is perhaps a little too difficult for a first level party, there's plenty of good fodder in there from which you can come u [...]

This is an outstanding module, simple and fun to run. The web enhancements make it an even better value (and at $3.50 I feel like I'm a thief!) The PDF is fantastic. Despite earlier comments, I had no issues with the PDF. I use Preview on my mac and [...]

This is definitely my favorite low-level adventure that I have ever read. Once it starts, it doesn't stop...and the climax is a battle of epic proportions beyond anything a 2nd level group could possibly imagine. Don't leave home without it. [...]

Someone else here remarked that the scan quality was bad. It's worse than that. The sample PDF that is displayed is cropped correctly and cleaned up. The file that you will receive is a worse quality scan than this with a lot more page lag, blurred tex [...]

We play with the D&D 3.5 rules, so some of the 3.0 stuff can throw you off if you're really into rules. We just played it as written and had lots of fun. Don't forget to download the additional wilderness adventure material from the website. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
