Shadows of Midnight: Jackson House

There are places in this world that are abandoned, destinations lost to the annals of time. Invariably, these places drove their inhabitants away for one reason or another and have since become freakish wrecks of their former selves, surrounded by strange tales and urban legends. You know these places. They are always described with phrases like "a truth stranger than fiction". These lost destinations, their myths, and the truths behind them are the focus of this book series, Lost Destinations.

Shadows of Midnight is dedicated to "exploring the wayward places, lost destinations, and haunted locales of the real world." The series covers everything from haunted homes and towns to abandoned military facilities to strange regional legends. Like the Big Bang series, the books are intended as a bridge for the gap between gaming material and "coffee table" style reference books. Each book goes into extraordinary detail regarding the subject matter. The books could be used as travel guides, provide interesting reading material regarding anectdotal horror and ghost stories, and finally finish by providing ideas for putting the material into use in your game. The back end even includes new gaming material.

Jackson, NJ once held the state's most famous unknown haunted house. The house was well known globally in the urban explorer community, but was virtually unknown outside NJ in the paranormal research community. A victim of arson, the structure lost its upper floor in 2005 and was plowed under a year later.

Those who visited the house have often told stories of paranormal experiences. In the living room was a bloodstained player piano that was well known for playing music while its automation scroll lay strewn on the floor. The living room was also the site of a strange blue glow, as well as floating balls of light that would chase intruders throughout the house. The back sitting room was known for the names of visitors appearing on the wall. Invisible things ran up and down the stairs and across the attic and skittered within the walls. And on one room upstairs, you could watch a trail of black footprints appear on the ceiling, right before your eyes. Strange cries and the laughter of children were known to emanate from the attic. Getting in and out of the house was a danger, for the property seemed to be guarded by a flock of very agressive crows and at least three groups of people reported being attacked by a man with an axe.

Two tales of tragedy and horror surround this house. The first tale establishes that the numerous paranormal events are the result of multiple hauntings in the home. They say that back in the 1970's, the last occupant of the home was a pedophile who kidnapped children, molesting and murdering them in that very house. The second tale relates that a married couple composed the final occupants. The husband, a drunk and wifebeater, one day beat his wife within an inch of her life in the kitchen and left her on the floor for dead. A day later, when she began moaning and calling for help, he dragged her to the attic and left her there, where she finally succumbed many days later from her injuries and dehydration.

This second volume of the Shadows of Midnight series is more generic than the prior volume of the series, and provides general notes on ways to use a haunted house in a campaign, as well as numerous adventure ideas pertaining specifically to Jackson House. Finally, the book closes with a brief treatise on infrasound, the likely culprit of about 95% of supposed hauntings in the civilized world, providing you with an option for "unhaunting" a haunted house.

This is the second edition of this title. The previous edition was published under our former Lost Destinations brand as Lost Destinations: Jackson House. This new edition includes an additional six pages of content, including the long awaited floor plans for the building. Buyers of the previous edition are eligible for a coupon reducing the purchase price of this edition by the cost of the previous edition.

Here's what our customers have to say regarding Shadows of Midnight: Jackson House and its previous incarnation, Lost Destinations:

  • "Another top-notch sourcebook from Alternate Realities. Like with the first Lost Destinations don't get put off if you don’t use D20 as almost all the book is background with little in the way of stats to slow it down. This lost destinations book as the name implies is all based around one haunted house. Although this book doesn’t have the same long-term appeal as West Milford it is great for a one shot adventure."

Shadows of Midnight has published three adventure locations, and I recommend them because of their links to The Unexplained (Carnivore Games, http://carnivoregames.com/wp/). "Jackson Hous [...]

Beautifully presented with many atmospheric photographs, this book details a real house, widely believed to be haunted, in New Jersey, USA... or at least formerly there, since the original survey by the author the house was badly damaged in a fire and [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
