Jaws of the Six Serpents - sword and sorcery light

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Sword and sorcery and darker fantasy in a compact package with the light, flexible PDQ system.

People like Jaws because it gives you what you need to get playing quickly, clearly explained and laid out.

The PDQ rules let you define your character by whatever you think is most important about them, and then provide simple frameworks for resolving any type of conflict, from mortal combat to devious negotiations. This book includes the standard PDQ rules, followed by a bunch of new material to slant them towards pulpy and darker fantasy - like danger levels and freeform sorcery.

The setting sketches out a classically-inspired sword and sorcery land. Peoples, outlined in a few paragraphs each, are both origins for characters and locations for adventures. From the bustling streets of Sartain to the forest ruins of Temisarum, from the moors of Kalet to the desolate sands of the Empty Cup, wonder and peril await!

Notes for the GM give advice on running the game and adapting it for different settings.

Also check out these Jaws supplements!

Serpents' Teeth - a GM's resource, with adventures, adventure frameworks and resources for using Jaws.

The Blizzard's Teeth - a standalone adventure with pregen characters, ideal for convention or pick-up games.

Have you tried the other games in the PDQ family? One basic system, worlds of gaming fun!

It runs like a dream for solo play. Minions makes it so easy, and it's easy to make all rolls player-facing because Qualities can convert into target numbers

It's one of my most often chosen systems for running solo games.

Hi Judd. I was just able to order it and got the pdf OK. Please try again, and if there are still issues can you give more detail? Or check with DT customer service if it's about site processes.

Deceptively simple, Jaws of the Six Serpents has become my favorite rules system, crafted to in a way in which the mechanics create the feel of Swords and Sorcery, which it nails. Magic feels forbidden and dangerous, monsters either make the players feel like badasses by being dispatched in hordes, or by themselves being truly monstrous and terrifying. Players are encouraged to lean into their characters through the PDQ system and by being rewarded with Fate points (essentially luck dice from other rule systems), or with more XP for doing so.

The metaphysics and elements of the world presented are fun and easy to grasp while easily being adaptable, the art is reminiscent of old-school black and white woodblock art, and includes recommendations good for GM's about awareness of the pulp Sword and Sorcery genre while remaining self aware and tasteful in a way other rulebooks fail in.

Couldn’t agree more! Been a fan since J6S was new. Still holds up well, in my Expert [+4] Humble Opinion.

Seems I was timed out, so I'm putting a review here:

I’ve owned and played J6S for almost ten years. I always had a soft spot for small indies by singular designers. Jaws stands out as a gem among them. The PDQ system is lightweight and easily gets out of the way, and its adoption here for dark fantasy/sword & sorcery themed fun is evocative, elegant and represents a very complete game. After all these years, I’m coming back to say how much I still love it and continue to play it.

As a GM, it’s a delight to run. Mooks and villains can be statted up in a snap with as little as Good [+2] Wolf. The resolution is fast and allows for any type of action one can imagine. The freeform magic system is great, with several flavors of low-powered consistent spellcraft to full powered and dangerous sorcery. It’s easy to construct any kind of low fantasy adventure imaginable.

The world is lightly sketched (which I prefer), but is easily adaptable to any world one wishes. It...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
