The Gamers’ Guide to Tabletop Role-playing Genres

Watermarked PDF

For years, tabletop role-playing games have been expanding and growing into ever-changing genres and sub-genres. After a while, there are so many products and so many sub-genres that trying to find just the right one can become overwhelming. So what do you do when you want to find a new game to play?

The Gamers' Guide to Tabletop Role-playing Genres helps to give Gamemasters and Players an idea of what genres and sub-genres are available and what products reside within them. It is not meant to define the genres and sub-genres, but rather help Gamemasters and Players better understand them. There is a landslide of published material for a multitude of genres and sub-genres that it's almost impossible to list every single one. But the effort has been made to research and find as many fully developed systems and settings as possible. This list omits the landslide of d20 sourcebooks that do not pertain to fully developed settings.

Please note that new editions will be published yearly.

The 3rd Edition of The Gamers' Guide to Tabletop Role-playing Genres includes:

  • New systems and settings released since the 2nd Edition
  • New digest layout for easier reading on tablet PCs and eReaders
  • New front cover (and rear cover)
  • Fully usable links to all noted publishers
  • The same great low price!

A great resource that outlines the various genres of tabletop RPGs, with examples of games in each genre. While this may seem to be of little use to a veteran gamer, it could be an excellent tool for educating new players about the hobby, and possibly [...]

I'm a bit of a fan of the Roleplayers Chronicle website because it's manager and the author of this publication has clearly been immersed in a pile of RPG products for some time, or at least knows what's what or when it's [...]

This is a decent product, but it could be improved upon in a few ways. A) Don't just Google. While there are a lot of games in here, all categorized correctly (to the best of my knowledge), they're almost all big-name things, or top hot games. Games [...]

The Gamer's Guide has two main goals. First, to cogently illustrates all of the main genres and sub-genres that are available for an enterprising tabletop RPG group. Second, to provide links to some of the leading games in each of those genres and sub-gen [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
