Description:

ATTENTION, CITIZEN JEROME-G. THIS IS YOUR FRIEND THE COMPUTER.

Jerome-G had a good job at the Threat Obfuscation Department in The Computer's underground city of Alpha Complex. He invented false threats to cover up true dangers. It made perfect sense, once he understood The Computer's idea of "true" is entirely false.

INTERNAL SECURITY CONSIDERS YOU A CITIZEN OF INTEREST.

Suddenly Jerome's fake menaces are turning real. Rogue robots are conspiring for independence. There's a pirate ship in the transport tubes. And the real-est threat is the powerful executive Ellister-V, who means to dispose of Jerome permanently.

WELCOME TO THE TROUBLESHOOTERS!

To evade a fatal reassignment as reactor shielding, Jerome volunteers for The Computer's elite service unit. Troubleshooters heroically defend Alpha Complex from traitors. Too bad Troubleshooters are often traitors themselves.

YOUR FIRST MISSION: FIND A LOST PAIR OF GLASSES.

If Jerome's teammates knew the equipment they seek is right in his pocket, they'd kill him. His experimental Augmented Reality goggles reveal the truth behind everything -- and he's more confused than ever.

YOU ARE IN ERROR. NO ONE IS SCREAMING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

Reality Optional - A PARANOIA novel by Gareth Hanrahan
(62,000 words - about 250 pages)

PARANOIA
Light-hearted stories of backstabbing, treachery, and Bouncy Bubble Beverage. Based on the bestselling roleplaying game of fear and ignorance in a darkly satirical future, official PARANOIA novels are now available as ebooks from Ultraviolet Books -- and they’re even for your security clearance.

If you prefer novels about Napoleon's invasion of Russia and the nature of power, history, and historiography -- well, have you tried War and Peace? That's a very nice book. But if you like Philip K. Dick and think The Office needs more firefights (and really, who doesn't?), your friend The Computer requires you to enjoy PARANOIA.

PARANOIA NOVELS ARE FUN. OTHER NOVELS ARE NOT FUN. READ PARANOIA.

(This .ZIP archive contains three DRM-free electronic versions of this book: an ePub file for use with the Nook and most other ereaders; a .mobi file for the Amazon Kindle family; and a .PDF file for your PC.)

Reality Optional author Gareth Hanrahan writes, "I'm a writer and game designer based in Ireland. I've written more roleplaying game supplements than I can recall, including the new edition of the classic science fiction rpg Traveller. Licensed works include RPG adaptations of the Laundry Files novels, the Primeval TV show, Babylon 5 and Conan. While working for Mongoose Publishing, I contributed several books to the award-winning PARANOIA line, and oversaw the 25th Anniversary edition of the game, as well as the INTSEC and HIGH PROGRAMMER rulebooks. This is my first novel."

Very enjoyable! I was a bit scared, RPG based books aren't necessarily good, but this one was nice! I like the gritty interpretation of the universe. (can't exactly remember what that play style is called in Paranoia XP) In 8 words: I was pleasantly [...]

Reality Optional is a new Paranoia novel from Gareth Hanrahan, one of the main developers of the new Paranoia game edition. I’ve enjoyed his work on the game a lot, and I really liked this book too. In fact, it managed to be better than I was expecting, [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
