Description:

Conceived and written by JD Wiker. Designed and developed by Marc Schmalz.

Combat, Only Faster!

Keeping track of initiative in games using the d20 System can get complicated. Every GM has a method that he or she favors, but which sometimes lacks in versatility or utility. Initiative Cards provides GMs both with an easy way to keep track of initiative, and a handy reference for all the sorts of information a GM sometimes needs during a game session. Initiative Cards do not replace monster sourcebooks, but they contain all the information needed to track and speed combat.

We've been giving away blank Initiative Cards since early 2002 for both fantasy and modern d20 System games. Now, we're offering pre-filled initiative cards for monsters.

Each planned Monster Set has about half of the monsters from the fantasy System Reference Document (SRD). The SRD, for those of you not intimate with the Open Game License (OGL), is the compilation of all the material that Wizards of the Coast has made available under the OGL, so other publishers can use it.

In addition to monsters actually found in the SRD, each set includes a selection of aged dragons. The staff Mechanics have created one of each true dragon and aged it through all twelve age categories, and we'll be sharing the full dragon stat blocks here as well, as free downloads. Monster Set 2 will also include many of the celestial and infernal creatures from the summoning tables in the PHB.

Initiative Cards: Monster Set 1 is a PDF for GMs containing pre-filled Initiative Cards for 348 monsters, as well as instructions for use and blank cards for characters and monsters. See a complete list of monsters in this set before you buy.

Initiative Cards requires the use of the Dungeons & Dragons®, Third Edition Core Books, published by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. This product utilizes updated material from the v.3.5 revision.

Initiative Cards from The Game Mechanics

In his home games, JD Wiker likes to use 3x5 cards to track combat. The information he keeps on the card also acts as a mini character sheet, holding all the information a GM regularly needs about the characters and monsters to run a game without flipping through the books.

This is a great line to pick up to speed up your games. Speed through combats without needing to flip from book to book or character sheets. After using the product a good while, however, there are a few points of improvement that could be added. 1 [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
