Description:

Tests of Skill v.3.5 is thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded version of the innovative OGL adventure module and sourcebook originally released as a version 3.0 publication and intended as a companion volume to Experts v.3.5. This edition has been expanded by 24 pages, had its character and monster stats corrected and revised, and had added to it one new encounter, one new scenario, one new scenario outline, a section on Defects and how to use them in the game, and numerous other elements. It is intended to be enjoyed both by people familiar with the previous version and those completely new to it.

Tests of Skill v.3.5 is designed to entertain and challenge players through scenarios and encounters that can be overcome optimally through role-playing, skill use, and diplomacy. While traditional hack-and-slash techniques can be used to complete portions of the scenarios, most groups will find that tact, thought, and appropriate use of skills, feats, and abilities are generally much more useful and effective. It includes numerous tips on adjudicating skill checks that can be applied to any game session.

Features include:

• A versatile wild-land setting the Silurian Heights that can be used as a campaign setting or easily dropped into almost any existing milieu, including statistics on six different urban areas and local weather.

• More than two dozen detailed encounters, including three complete mini-dungeons and general and specific encounter tables.

• Three detailed scenarios and three scenario outlines that explain how to organize the included encounters into effective plot lines.

• 10 maps and diagrams, including player’s and DM’s wilderness maps, diagrams of several encounter areas, and a dungeon map based on Dwarven Forge’s Master Maze sets.

• Dozens and dozens of fully keyed and described NPCs, including two complete adventuring parties and stats for sample Warriors, Commoners, and Experts of the types like to be encountered.

• Three new prestige classes, the Gnoll Crocuta (plus the new Fear spell domain), Humbug, and Mercenary Commander.

• 16 new Skills, 35 new Feats, and 19 new Defects.

• Three new monsters, the Half Troll, Dire Hyena, and Multi-Mind.

• Detailed rules on the creation, usage, and special properties of books, including their effects on XP and skill checks.

This download includes low-resolution screen-friendly and high-resolution printer-friendly versions both of its cover surfaces and its interior pages.

Gnoll Crocuta Spells: A Supplement to ‘Tests of Skill v.3.5’

Inspired by the works of classic swords-and-sorcery authors like Fritz Lieber, Jack Vance, and Robert E. Howard, Swords of Kos: Hekaton is the second entry in Skirmisher Publishing LLC’s fantasy fiction series and follows Swords of Kos: Necropolis. In this anthology, the island and city of Kos and the lands around it are explored through the stories of eleven authors and original illustrations and cartography by nine artists. All are set during the Hekaton, centennial observance of the great volcanic cataclysm that reawakened magic, the elder races, and all manner of fell monsters, in a fantasy world that draws upon the myths, legends, and history of the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Middle East.

Stories in this compilation include “Bloodsuckers” by Michael O. Varhola, “Rogue’s Nightmare” by R.M. Aislin, “Chasing Shadows” by Richard T. Balsley, “The Misadventures of Bjoric” by Brendan Cass, “The Rite” by Christopher Van Deelen, “To the Dragon Apeiron” by Lissanne Lake, “Unfamiliar Ground” by Sharon Daugherty, “The Day Pateon Fnordseeker Gave Up Drinking” by Eric Lis, M.D., “Nithernons the Ale’er” by John Giddens, and “The Price of Land” by D.M. Fitzgerald. Join us in our adventures through the dark and fascinating swords-and-sorcery world of Kos!

I love hack and slash games as much as the next gamer, but a change of pace is always welcome. Tests of skill was more of an excercise in problem solving. Creative use of skills can make it so no blood need be shed. I like that premise. My players really [...]

Imagine two rambunctious bulls spearherding towards each other on a narrow road. Eventually they crash into one another with one prevailing and the other barely hanging on. Now take that same scene and add a half dozen more bulls and that same narrow [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
