Touchstones
by Artemis M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/31/2023 16:40:44

Reiterates on the Old, and Thinks Outside the Box for the New

The first half of the book is nothing special, with a decent amount of padding from page-sized images, and what feels like just going more in-depth to the existing explanations of Touchstones from the core rulebook. For people who have spent a decent amount of time with the game it's nothing to write home about, but may be handy for those who are struggling with the base concepts of the Touchstone system.

Where the book really earns its pricetag and distinguishes itself is in the last half.

Firstly are the well thought-out and well-argued arguments for touchstones such as a location, or someone who's departed, amongst others. Usually I may try to hurry these non-human touchstone canidates away from my table, but solid cases were made on how to still interact with them and make them just as engaging as typical touchshtones, if not moreso in some cases!

Secondly is a set of merits that promote interacting with your Touchstones more, and do an excellent job of factoring them more into your character without making them a must-have for every player.

Finally is the section on Random and Sample Touchstones, which are great at on-the-fly inspiration and establishing some baselines for statted-out touchstones. I was dissapointed that neither included any of the new kinds of touchstones given, like an Organisation or Philosophy.

Bloodlines: The Resurrected
by Oisin [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/30/2023 20:14:52

An excellent update of many first edition Bloodlines to second edition. I especially like the "Quick Bites" appendix, which gives errata for published Bloodlines and Disciplines, including a much improved version of Crochan for the Bron, and a useful sidebar on creating new Bloodlines.

Lair of the Hidden
by Cam [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/29/2023 09:44:23

This book provides both a compelling story and setting dragged down by isponsible depictions of sexual violeave and the depiction of a transgender woman who initially transitioned because she was the victim of sexual violence and felt immasculated combined with the suggestion of depicting sexual assault in play with the goal of pushing said character to suicide (with only the warning that doing so could result in combat and the potential death of player characters) should give any potential buyer pause.

Adventure to Hollow Earth
by Robert W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/28/2023 15:18:40

This is really a fantastic adventure for M20, of which there are far too few if you are not that good at creating your own. Unlike many other game systems, to include the 5th edition books for World of Darkness, Mage the Ascension (20th Anniversary edition) doesnt have published adventures to guide new players and Storytellers into the game, which can make it hard if you don't have an experienced player to guide you. This adventure is very helpful, and well written. I highly suggest it for everybody.

Kithbook: Dullahan
by Gavin D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/27/2023 02:01:25

A solid and well-put-together book. Truly, this may be one of my favorite Kith of all time now. There are places where some of the art could have been managed a bit better, but the text is top-notch, and the Kith are just so much fun.

Harbingers of Winter
by Gavin D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/27/2023 01:58:02

A phenomenal work. This book is filled to the brim with all kinds of tools for a Changeling storyteller to flesh out the villains of a campaign. Information on the Thallain, on the Fomorians, on Dauntain, or on brand new threats to send after your players. Highly recommended.

Kiths of Arcadia
by Gavin D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/27/2023 01:53:18

As a huge fan of Changeling since 1st edition, who also played the Arcadia card game, I had long wanted to see the kith from that game expanded out into fully playable Kith. This book absolutely did not disappoint.

I am absolutely in love with every single one of these Kith. Phenomenal work. There's not a weak spot in here.

If I had any quibbles, I don't feel like Gremlins from the card game were just Goblins, or that the Djinn from the card game were fully detailed by the Arabian fae in C20 player's guide; both of those truly could have had their own full writeups. But honestly, this is a truly minor quibble when every kith they detail in here is a hit out of the park. Well, well worth the cost, and then some.

This is basically a B-movie as an adventure. The plot is a bit tacky but well written and organized. The handouts are great.

Koldunic Sorcery Remastered
by Artemis M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/23/2023 14:36:11

Fun, Varied, and Occasionably Flawed.

Diving into Koldunic Sorcery Remastered, you're immediately aware of how much work was put into focusing on the narrative of it being a highly personal and mystical powerset. Especially compared to the present fifth edition interpretation of Koldunic Sorcery: Focusing on the different personalities of different kinds of spirits and how it affects how one bonds with not only them, but the land they inhabit and how to work with them is incredibly interesting. Additionally, there are further rules on how some can force some of these spirits to their will, or allow mortals to interacts with these powers, making for an incredibly varied entry to the Darkfall Collection, and incredibly useful for Storytellers who don't have players interested in this discipline, but want some unexpected challenges to present the players with.

With the provided powers being so varied, useful, and unique, it really does feel like the only drawback to them is how exclusive they are in the lore (but then again, that's not an issue if you're already using non-official work by virtue of havign this book) means that I can't feature these powers with each and every vampire, as they are just that fun to throw around and utilize for either their plain utility or efficacy, or by virtue of how dramatic disintegrating into the wind for travel or striking someone with a lightning bolt can be!

However, I can't ignore that this entry also has a number of "effectless" disciplines, either by virtue of having poor language to describe why you'd want to take what seems like a purely flavor-based power, or simply lacking mechanical information.

  • Hungry Earth, Path of Earth: Pulls a victim into the Earth. Doesn't specify if supernaturals are affected the same way as mortals or if you're able to push someone more than six feet below the Earth. With no resistance roll, powerful vampires or werewolves are essentially helpless worm food.
  • Theft of Mokosh, Path of Air: Makes an oxygen-free bubble around a target. While it puts out fires . . . there's no explanation as to how this affects the target, and no resistance roll to represent holding your breath.
  • Pool of Lies, Path of Water: You make strange images appear in bodies of water around a target you cursed. These have absolutely no mechanical effect on the target whatsoever, despite other powers in this book having distracting/harassing powers that do have mechanical effects to impact willpower recovery or focus. Admittedly, The Insults of Krivda two levels later makes it far more useful, but that only serves to divide a player's choice between the other fun choices for the Path of Water in order to make one function better.
  • The Weeping of Kruchina, Path of Water: Those affected uncontrollably sob. No mechanical effect is given for how this may affect sight or a steady hand or at least stealth, meaning that unless someone is able to imagine a creative use its only effect is to break the masquerade when kindred cry bloody tears.
  • Heat Wave, Path of Fire: Exhale incredibly hot air. While it is stated to dry out material, the "causes burns to blister on any target within range" description has no mechanical effect or damage detailed out.
  • Fiery Demise, Path of Fire: You detonate when you die. Really cool and devastating, but with absolutely no effect while you're still alive: branding yourself 1560 times over the course of three decades only to be rewarded with the most powerful talent of all being a suicide bomb is a real let-down. At the very least I feel this power should have had some use such as a fiery backlash when put into torpor - a kind of death - to hopefully buy the user some time to find some utility while you're alive.

I use this literally every time I run Vampire. The condensed Discipline tables are invaluable and so easy to navigate and it's amazing how much information they are able to include without overstuffing the pages. The diablerie chart has been SO HELPFUL. Can't recommend picking this up enough.

Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition
by Matthew H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/20/2023 06:58:42

This is an enjoyable edition, and one I personally found much more engaging than V5. There are definitely cultural flubs, the disciplines are a fair bit out of wack, and the character creation is more than a little busted. But the way the world was presented, the detail, and the art engaged me a fair amount more than when I first bought the V5 corebook a while back. Don't be afraid to check this out of you've only played V5, you might find some stuff you like more in here.

Bloodlines Companion (Vampire: the Masquerade 5th Edition)
by Artemis M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/18/2023 05:13:42

Por favor, ignore isso se você fala português!

I was super excited to pick this book up, as I'm a major fan of some of the older bloodlines and thrilled to find something to revive them in fifth edtion. Unfortunately, it seems like the Bloodlines Companions were either hastily machine-translated, or amateurly translated from Portuguese to English, as evidenced by this exceprt and a read through the previews: To modern Cainites, Baali mentions are nothing more than a breath of fresh air from an era that no longer exists. Knowing their history, who they are and what they do has become nothing more than pure curiosity! Unfortunately, some Clans, like the Assamite, are rescuing a past that should have been kept secret. Therefore, if the Baali hope to reign over modern society again, they must destroy any chance of their reputation becoming spoken history again.

At best the choppy word choice will disorientate you as you read through, and at best it will make some key lore and rules barely comprehensable and therefore incredibly difficult to turn into something you can use at your table. This translation quality is mentioned nowhere in the description before you buy.

Despite this, there's still some amount of content you could extract or use if you're an English speaker, and it's very obvious that a lot of work went into developing this book and its sequel. However, good intentions and effort don't diminish the book struggling to be coherent for English speakers.

Protean Remastered
by Artemis M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/18/2023 00:25:20

"Boring" feels harsh, but earned.

Many of the other entries in the Shadowfall Collection are great in exploring the boundaries of a Discipline, and encourage you to really think outside the box on how you could use that Discipline. Protean Remastered, however, feels like it lost the plot.

At least in my eyes, the basic power has two halves: Changing the properties of a Kindred (weight, solidity, merging with nature), and the other changes their shape (animal features and talents).

Remastered takes a similar approach to this split and follows the occult powers' (Blood Sorcery, Oblivion) approach of adding a second sub-discipline alongside the primary one: Metamorphosis. However, this results in an unsatisfying pairing where Protean - the primary discipline - lacks its own identity and doesn't provide much in the way of more esoteric or elemental powers. Out of ten powers, 4 are either boosting your animal-related powers or metamorphosis, four are the more elemental powers . . . with three of them being core powers anyways, and the last two are very specific resistance-based powers that are so niche in their use it feels like they'd only be viable if you asked your Storyteller ahead of time if they'd be useful, and saved them only for those moments.

This leaves Metamorphosis, which gives itself away when you observe one of the bigger appeals of this book: a section on creating custom powers, most of which recommend effects "similar to Auspex or Celerity" or "similar to Fortitude". This results in a further fifteen powers (ten provided, five examples) which really seem to just boil down to a mix of physical disciplines except reflavored to be more animalistic. "It's like Celerity, except you take on catlike features." "It's like potence, but you're hairier when you do it." Considering that Gangrel already have Fortitude and are the only clan intended to use this book, the amount of powers that are reflavored Fortitude abilities is additionally redunant.

With that in mind, this is the single easiest book in the Shadowfall Collection to skip. Not many powers are added to the base discipline and many support the sub-discipline, meaning that you don't get a lot to dip into as an out-of-clan discipline and don't get much added to the base discipline, with most of the sub-discipline being situational or variations upon other existing disciplines. Simply ask your Storyteller if you can put some whiskers or a tail on another Discipline's power or if you can give away a dot to automatically pass some specific environmental challenge for the rest of the chronicle.
