World of Lykarnia : A Game Of Classic Fantasy Role-Playing (with Bonus)
by David B. S. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/16/2011 01:33:36
This is a really solid product that obviously meant a lot to the author. The layout is clear and easy to read. Character creation is explained logically and with lots of examples. There is a good balance of campaign background info, dispersed with game crunch, so the reader isn't overwhelmed at any time.

The character "Paths" have refreshing twists to them that make them stand out from typical fantasy tropes. Character races, or "Cultures" are pretty predictable, but comfortable. Magic is handled in a tongue-in-cheek way, but still respects the power of the arcane caster. I wish there had been more spells, but I have a feeling that between fans of the game submitting spells and supplements (hopefully), there will be plenty in the future.

Combat seems to lean towards the 'quick and gritty' stuff I love, and the resolution mechanic is easy to understand and based off of the 1d10 die roll.

Wrapping up, I like this product very much! The system is easy to grasp, allowing a gaming group to get started right away; there are many options, allowing for character growth and longevity; and it appears easy for a GM to add spells, gear and creatures of his or her own design fairly easily!

Hello David, thank you for the kind words. This game does mean a lot to us and especially me personally thank you. Lykarnia is our first attempt at a full blown RPG and we've already identified areas that we can improve on. It is worthwhile to note that we have an on-going playtest campaign to ensure that any issues get ironed out as quickly as possible through issued Addendums on our website http://www.bigironvault.com/wolhome.html. We would be honoured if you join our facebook page (big iron vault) and suggested ways to improve on this game or just to simply hang out! Best regards, Keith
World of Lykarnia : A Game Of Classic Fantasy Role-Playing (with Bonus)

World of Lykarnia certainly feels D&D-ish. There are 6 traits that map perfectly onto the 6 standard abilities of D&D. There are skills, classes, levels, the standard races. Everything we expect in a FRPG. The equipment list the same weapons we have seen dozens of times. Granted I am not expecting much there.
A couple of things I felt were odd. The table of contents is huge, even for a 169 page book. I think the author could have collapsed a level or so; give us the broad categories, not ever thing to a Level 3 Header. Secondly the book starts off with (Chapter 2) with an example on combat. We don't even know what some of the words being used are (Spirit Score?) but we are supposed to follow along? Didn't like that.
The system is a simple d10 based one, not all that different than Unisystem or True20 (with a d10 instead). I found that more interesting since I could use this with Unisystem fairly easy (Characters are even ranked 1 to 5 on their traits). The magic system is interesting, but the spells are not all that different than what can be read in the Basic D&D books. I do like how they were grouped into classical elements. The bit about psychotic disorders seemed way too modern for a fantasy game to be honest. The monsters are just descriptions with their stats at the back of the book in a big table. Like OD&D.
There is a introductory adventure in the back as well, which I thought was a nice touch.
The author obviously put a lot of work into this book but there is nothing here that we have not seen already.
The included JPG map is very nice.
I give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Hello Timothy, you have brought up many great points and we will take those to heart to make sure they get fixed. Thank you for taking the time to check our little ol' game out. Good note on psycotic disorders - it would be great to give "fantasy" names to some of those disorders to keep them in tune with the setting, we're working on this. The intent to the World of Lykarnia was to give players and Storyteller's a lot of leeway on how they want their games to go and left many things simple and very "tweakable" (is that even a word?) for players to add, I hope that came across as well. We also have a process to accept contributions on our website to make some of these ideas official. Believe it or not I'm actually not aware of the Unisystem, I will need to check it out. By the way we take your reference to OD&D as a positive thing! ;) ... Cheers, Keith "Loves to kick it old school" Foo.
