Age of Heroes Motor Racing Basic Set
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/07/2020 17:37:59

This is a quick little dice game that leaves much to be desired. As it stands this is a no buy here is why:

  • The included game book is missing key pieces of information - There is no pole score per person.
  • There is no indication of what kind of dice you have to roll -- we can assume its 2d6 based on the table but it is not explicitly mentioned in the rules.
  • Your pole position has absolutly no relevence on the game score and only used for longer term games.
  • There is nothing here that gives you the feeling that you are racing cars against each other, you could just roll all 8 segments out for each car and then add up the scores. If I were not simulating the game there might be some kind of tension.
  • A lot of things are simply unclear no matter how many times you read the rules.
  • There is no flair or understanding of what the 1921 season was like, how many cars competed in each race? What were the historical outcomes? All you get is a half finished spreadsheet.

I played this game by writing a python program around it to simulate a bunch of races. I figure if you're on a road trip or something this game might be interesting to play.

From mud to glory: American Football the 70s
by Steven P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/10/2013 19:16:56

This game was a different take on sports replays for me. There is NO roster keeping, no line-ups to fill in, no play calling. You really are not "coaching" a team. You are watching a season unfold as you roll your dice and watch the results of game come in.

The game is built around comparisons of Team A's offensive scoring versus Team B's defensive results, then a comparison of Kicking, defensive scoring, and luck or clutch ability. An individual game can be rolled up in five to ten minutes, a full week's thirteen game schedule(in 1971) in an hour or so. The results are more "true to life" than many games far more detailed.

The game brought back many happy memories of watching the NFL in the 1970's with my dad, especially as his team (Baltimore) beat my team as his team(Washington) in my "Superbowl".

I enjoyed the game as a solitaire sports game, and plan to play several more seasons from the 1970's, as well as play the WHA Hockey game from the same designer.

Prussia Rising

Sumptuous map graphics, worthy of a top quality pre printed Euro game. I must admit that I have replaced the troop counters with Irregular Miniatures 2mm blocks but that, in part is because in part I still like to move figures around! However, it also means I can represent units/formations (Bavarian, Marin etc) as opposed to the generic French / Prussian provided. Yes that does mean I have been fiddling with the rules BUT the rules themselves are pleasantly simplistic and allow for that sort of thing. In addition, as a pedant and historian I like any simulation that represents the war that fulfilled Bismarck's ambition (planned or pragmatic) of German unification to reflect the presence not just of Prussia but her (not always completely willing) confederates.

In conclusion this is a lovely little game with th potential for much tinkering, fantastic production and an absolute bargain.

White Mountain

The quality; It is a product on a rare period, the rules sense good, the use of morale value and the activity chips are a good idea to add to the old SPI rules. On the wrong side 1) The counter the protestants counter are passable, but it can be enhanced by the names of the unit (I had the book of P GUTHRIE) Battle of the THIRTY YEARS WAR. In this case as the Colors of the sashes of the army of the palatinate ruler king of Bohemia is BLUE (Colors of the witesbach) it can a good idea to use Blue Counter for the protestants. In the case of the leader HOHENLOHE who the third leader and is not depicted in the game. 2)The catholic counter are bad : You can hardly with the use of the front view of the miniature, make the difference between infantry and cavalry. In fact the field sign of the catholic was the use of white scarf, so the catholic counter could be white and the center of the counter could be blue for the catholic league and red for the imperialist/austrian. The name of the leader of the imperialist lack too : He was Bucqoy (Lieutenant-General Charles Bonaventura de Longueval , Count of Bucquoy). Like the protestants the name of the unit lack. 3) The map : Palace of the star : Add a bird view for the star palace on the map. Second and more complicated the right side of the white mountain (From the catholic side) was more steppy that the left side which was more sloppy.

Great game, though the rules aren't explained that well that's why you will probably brood a while over the combat result table but than it's gorgeous.
