Lost in the Lights

I hosted this game with a group of 4 for 3 sessions, 4 hours each session. It's quite fun, especially the action movie part. The handouts are very well-prepared.

Fun and amazingly well build suplement. Adventure is very nice as well.

For the publisher: It looks like the form fillable char sheet is password protected/not able to be filled in. Could you take a look at that? Edit: Form fillable is now working, thanks so much!!

Thanks for letting us know Sebastiaan. The fillable Acrobat file was not uploaded with any password so I'm unsure of what is happening with you. However, the individual character sheet files have been removed and replaced with a ZIP file containing the files as an alternative. Could you please download this and try again with the fillable version in the ZIP? Many thanks in advance.

Investigator Weapons volume 3: Gaslight Era
by Dale E. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/21/2023 16:08:14

Overall, this is a great supplement for games set anywhere from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s, with plenty of research and passion behind it, though I found a few quirks that were disappointing to me. There are loads of guns here, more than you'll probably ever use in your games, complete with pictures, optional rules, accessories, and so on. You (literally) get the bang for your buck, and this guy knows his stuff. All of his Investigator Weapons guides are great, and I highly recommend them.

The two quirks with this one stood out enough, to me, to warrant a drop in a star, though.

For one, the book's predominantly focused on American and British weapons, which means several very prolific weapons of the era from other countries aren't included. No Lebels, no Mosin-Nagants, and no Arisakas. Fair enough, they're not the focus of the book, but what drops my rating here is that some other less-notable guns from other countries are already included. The French predecessor to the Lebel is listed, it's even mentioned that the Lebel replaced it, but the Lebel's not in the book. Why have the MAS and not the Lebel, which would be even more widely available? Arisakas and Mosins are also mentioned but not listed, and a few other notable guns were left out too, like the Swiss Vetterli.

Secondly, there are some discrepancies in stats I noticed. More of a nitpick, but if you like more "realistic" games (or are just obsessed with stats) you might need to make some adjustments. For example, the 7.63x25mm Mauser C96 is listed, but it's significantly weaker in damage than the .45 LC Colt Single Action Army, even though the 7.63 round has a significantly higher velocity and kinetic energy on average than .45 LC. This isn't unique to IW3 though, the CRB has a similar problem.

Some important weapon details are also not made clear or are buried in the weapon's historical info. The Snider carbine is supposed to be less effective against armor, and so armor values are doubled when calculating damage, but you'd easily miss this if you didn't read its entire section carefully.

If you're looking for the definitive Hunt: Showdown weapons table, this isn't it. Very close, but not quite it. I still highly recommend it if you ever plan on running games in this time period though, and while you might have to do some homebrew if you want to add the absent guns in, it's a minor problem compared to the excellent book as a whole. Very good supplement.

Like the two others books: a remarkable work of documentation which makes it possible to put the firearms of the investigators in a realistic framework, both historically and technically. It really serves the spirit and atmosphere of the game. ... Thank you again for this booklet.

Like the two previous opuses: a remarkable work of documentation which makes it possible to put the firearms of the investigators in a realistic framework, both historically and technically. It really serves the spirit and atmosphere of the game. I'm just a little disappointed that there isn't our national Lebel... But I know full well that a lot of trade-offs have to be made... Thank you again for this booklet.

Investigator Weapons, volume 1
by Nicholas H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/21/2022 15:41:41

My group loves this book! The core CoC rulebook is a bit sparse on available weapons, so we really appreciate the expansive roster and meticulous detail on how the guns all differ. This sourcebook doesn't skive on any details; you'll know every pertinent stat from handling, reloading, rarity, and even country of origin. I appreciate the author taking the time to find many 'unique' historical weapons, like the silenceable Nagant revolver or the Far Killer long-range shotgun, which open up very different combat specialties from what's possible within the base guns. Our Keeper has also enjoyed the section on cultish/magic weapons, and has built several memorable mini-bosses wielding enchanted/infused firearms.

The bonus PDF containing only stat tables is a wonderful inclusion for quickly perusing options, for either character creation or shopping downtime. The alternate ammo types also add a lot of versatility for creative players, considering most CoC characters only have the skillpoints to spec into a single weapon.

In summary, this book was great for enhancing backstories (players often needed to justify how they wound up with these rare guns), diversifying combat, and improving the overall CoC experience.

If you want an expanded weapons list plus some alternate rules for combat this is a great product. I found this works well with Pulp Cthulhu and it gives those students of history, which many who play this game are, a reward for their erudition and enthusiasm.

Cathulhu

FANTASTIC and adorable while also being comparably more serious than the similarly named Call of Cathulhu. One thing to note off the bat is this is a SIXTH edition book, not a seventh edition. A seventh edition version of the book is available but only in german, as far as I know. Unfortunately it has not been translated to english or released yet. The book contains one adventure, and is rather thin at only maybe ~100 pages, but despite that it is a really fun read, and probably the best possible start for any Cat themed investigations, as all cats naturally have access to the Dreamrealms. (One note off the bat, the book does refer to the H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands book which is unfortunately even now somewhat pricy. This means without the Dreamlands book or some tight homebrewing much of your adventures may be very earth-bound. Keep this in mind before purchasing. ) There are a lot of rather interesting and fitting rules, such as character creation will result in most cats natively having a negative damage bonus due to their small size, as well as character creation being split with different breeds available (don't worry too much about this, replicating your favorite cat is easy and if you don't like specifics, you can always play a domestic shorthair which is shorthand for mixed breed cat). Another thing I found odd was, at least to the quick read through I did of the book, there aren't any suggestions for having a cat investigator along with a party of human investigators, possibly as a tag-along. While communication between the two may be difficult, it seems quite possible with enough Language human skill, although the issue then would be how the cat would communicate anything it found to humans which without magic seems impossible. Another potential as a DM for these rules would be to create a seperate sheet for an investigator's pet cat. This would allow the cat to witness things which the human would be unable to, and potentially transmit it via dreams. Otherwise a nice introduction to the world of cats.

EDIT: It is now a 7th edition book

Really good thing. Unfortunately it's lacking some of most important Eastern Block weapons. But for investigators working in US of A it's a must have. Also - some older weapons should be reprinted (I'm mostly playing in 1990, but some weapons included in vol.1 are still in use...)

Investigator Weapons, volume 2
by Jeffrey V. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/09/2015 16:56:33

Like volume 1, this volume provides detailed rules and discussions on a wide variety of firearms, this time running from roughly the period of World War II to the present day. The purpose of the book is to provide Keepers and Investigators alike with detailed role-playing rules and procedures for simulating combat with modern firearms. In addition, this volume includes a bonus section on how to convert the information for use with 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu rules. Given that the actual conversion process is not difficult, this isn't actually vital, but it is a very nice touch.

The discussion and pictures provided for each firearm, along with the tabular information make this book an outstanding addition to any role-player's library, even if they do not play Call of Cthulhu or use the BRP rules as the basis for their game. Enough information is provided to permit any intelligent GM to use the information in his/her Top Secret; Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes; or apocalyptic end-of-the-world game to make it useful almost anywhere.

The quality of the PDF is high, and it would easily be printed out if the Keeper so desires, without any fear of loss of content or any excessive use of ink to do so (other than, perhaps, for the cover). It is a worthy successor to Volume 1 and I was very glad to add it to my library even though my CoC campaigns are usually in the "classic" era instead of the modern one. I can strongly recommend this for anyone interested in an excellent interpretation of modern firearms for RPGs, especially if you are using BRP or Call of Cthulhu rules to run your game, but frankly it is so well done that even the non-RPGer with an interest in modern firearms could purchase and enjoy this book.

Cathulhu

Originally published at: http://diehardgamefan.com/2014/07/21/tabletop-review-cathulhu-velvet-paws-on-cthulhus-trail-call-of-cthulhu/

Cathulhu originally appeared several years ago in the German Call of Cthulhu publication Cthulhoide Welten, under the name Katzulhu. It would be translated into English as Cathulhu for the Worlds of Cthulhu magazine that has been out of print for some time. Sixtystone Press has gathered those original articles and compiled them, along with some new material, into this new supplement for Call of Cthulhu. This game should NOT be confused with Call of Catthulhu. Both games features cats doing battle with Lovecraftian abominations, but that is really the only thing the two have in common. Call of Catthulhu strives to be more welcome to families and very young gamers, while Cathulhu is the same old dark and somewhat gory Call of Cthulhu, except you are playing felines instead of hairless apes. Call of Cathulhu has its own mechanics and rules, while Cathulhu is a supplement for Call of Cthulhu (using Sixth Edition rules), so you’ll need that core rulebook to use it. Which is better? That’s all personal opinion. Both are inspired by John Wick’s Cat to varying degrees, but they are indeed their own beasts, so to speak. I really enjoy them both, and I think you will too.

So what is in Cathulhu? Well, you get character creation rules, two articles on how to play the game differently from Call of Cthulhu, two articles on Bast, a small bestiary of foes (many of which merely forward you to other Call of Cthulhu products), a pretty long introductory adventure called “The Black Cat,” and a two page character sheet. Everything in the supplement is well written and interesting, but it is pretty pricey for what you get, especially for a third party Call of Cthulhu release. You can generally get something with twice the page count for the cost of Cathulhu. Still, it’s a fun and fascinating supplement that really turns Call of Cthulhu on its ear, so it may be worth picking up, especially if you are a completionist.

The character creation rules are pretty fun. It’s worth noting that, because it uses Call of Cthulhu rules, Size + Strength ensures that all cats have a negative damage bonus. You really can’t get around this, so expect combat to be even more ineffectual than usual. Cathulhu also replaces Sanity Points with Sentience, which makes sense. They work in the same manner. It’s just instead of going insane, you become more feral. Cat Investigators can develop insanities though, so keep that in mind. You’re also given sixteen breeds of cats to choose from. Think of these like the profession for your investigator. The default is Domestic Shorthair, which is very similar to the Caitiff in Vampire: The Masquerade. Each other breed gets a bonus and a drawback, along with a “trick” that is inherent to that breed. For example, our Maine Coon, Shelly, would get +1 to STR and CON, no drawback and the Bruiser Trick. Meanwhile, our Domestic Shorthair, Malice, would get no bonuses or drawbacks and would get to pick her trick from the list of fifty-two options! All cats gets “Leap to the Moon” and “Nine Lives” tricks for free. Then you get to pick one off the list (so Domestic Shorthairs get two), so your character will have a total of four tricks. After that, you assign skill points to the various categories. Instead of the usual Investigator skills like art, punch, physics, electrical repair and Latin, you have very cat oriented ones like cuteness, yowl, scratch, wash and human lore. It’s all very well done and the game can be as serious or comedic as you want.

The section called “What Do Cat Adventures Look Like” is only two pages long, but it’s worth discussing, if only because a lot of people will end up playing their cat as they would a human, which just doesn’t work. Cats have better night vision, can hear and see things we don’t, and their sense of smell is superior to ours in every way. Meanwhile, they can’t drive, operate doorknobs or read tombs in classic Greek that provide the spell which will banish the Mythos beastie of the week. The same can be said about “Additional Cathulhu Rules,” which details how insanity works in cats, flight or flight responses and how your cat can learn new tricks.

The adventure “The Black Cat” takes up roughly a fourth of the supplement, and it is a rather grisly feature about someone or something who has been killing local cats by ripping out their hearts! Like I said at the beginning, Call of Catthulhu this is not! The adventure introduces the Cat Investigators to the Cthulhu Mythos, specifically the Dreamlands, and a creature from that plane of existence which has been brought to our own world against its will. You get a nice taste of the occult, and the adventure teaches not only the basics of Cathulhu but Call of Cthulhu mechanics as well. It’s a great look at how very different an adventure for cats is from an adventure for humans. I will say that people for whom cat violence is a trigger should probably not play this adventure and stick to Call of Catthulhu, as it is a more forgiving and lighter in tone system.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed Cathulhu in its new incarnation, and it is great that the piece is now widely available again. Letting one purchase the PDF on Chaosium or RPGNOw’s websites is a lot easier than tracking down old copies of Worlds of Cthulhu for the average gamer. Although the supplement IS overpriced compared to other Call of Cthulhu supplements and similar releases, the content here is very well thought out, and is a lot of fun of CoC gamers to read, even if they never actually use it with their own gaming group. The artwork/pictures in the piece are especially charming and they might be worth picking up Cathulhu for on their own. I’m excited to see that this Cathulhu supplement won’t be a one-time thing, as the back of the book announces an upcoming release entitled The Cat Army of Ulthar. I personally am really looking forward to that! I would never have thought that there would be room in our industry for two “Cat Vs. Cthulhu Mythos” games on the market, but it certainly seem that way. Cathulhu is a fun and outside the box addition to the Call of Cthulhu gaming system, and who knows, it might just be a gateway for some new or younger gamers into the realm of Lovecraftia!

A well written and presented example of that rarest of things; a Call of Cthulhu supplement that you can give to players. HKV has been producing quality work for Call of Cthulhu and GURPS for years and this is no exception. I particularly liked the suggested weapons for antagonists and the sections on law.

While the sections of the Tommy Gun and other exotic weapons is useful, the author presented numerous examples of work-a-day guns and took care to present each one in context as well as highlighting useful information for a Keeper. Investigators will use this as a catalogue of shooting irons for the characters, Keepers will find the background information useful for using guns as clues and parts of the mystery.

Highly recommended. I spent $14.99 on this in PDF and I was so impressed, I'll be shelling out for the print edition as soon as it becomes available.

I am intersted in running a First World War scenario, and I decided to try this product in the hope that it would have statistics for the weapons of the First World War.

This supplement has detailed information on weapons and new firearms rules. The rules made some good points about Call of Cthulhu. How do you make an aimed shot in Call of Cthulhu? The rulebook doesn't talk about it, but this is important because so many players arm themselves with guns. This book suggests some rules that appear workable.

The weapon descriptions are very thorough. I have no complaints about the descriptions.

Overall, this product is very good. It didn't have every weapon I was looking for, but this is Volume 1, so I expect other volumes to come along and add more information.
