DEADLY MISSIONS: Expansion Eleven: Gates of Merlantis
by Anne T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/05/2014 21:26:13
The triumphant return of David's hand-drawn figures to the Grey Matter catalogue: eight all-new goodies. This expansion to the fast-growing Deadly Missions line has me more excited than any other in terms of the story and figures. While the artwork of the tiles leaves something to be desired (also largely hand-drawn), the specific nature of the tiles would have made it very difficult to find them among existing GMG partners. While the combination of hand-drawn, grey-scale floor-tiles and full-colour (illustrated? computer-rendered?) water is a bit jarring at first, it works better than I expected. The map tiles would normally have cost this rating a half- or even full-star, but I'm so happy with the hand-drawn figures, and the new aquatic twists, that I'm rounding up to 5/5 stars for this one. Now I've got to get this set printed and ready to play!

Guild Hall Battle Map
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/10/2013 11:41:57
This battle map, suitable for 25-30mm wargames figures or miniatures (or suitably-scaled paper standees), depicts a small but imposing structure. It's called a 'Guild Hall' but to my eyes it looks more like a large mausoleum, or a structure in a crematorium where there are little enclosed alcoves for the ashes of the dear departed... I seem to be in a morbid mood this afternoon.

It is very nicely done, almost photorealistic. The cover picture gives an impression of what it looks like viewed normally, the battle map itself is the usual top-down view. The two domes in particular are nicely rendered.

Just why you'd be fighting around the place is a bit open to question. It could be a source or stronghold of zombies, or even somewhere the party has holed up in to get away from them...

Whatever you decide, it's a neat little battle map. Have fun with it.

TORN WORLD's Torn Armor Set Two
by Cynthia C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/06/2013 13:12:40
The only reason this isn't a five-star review is that eight is a very low number of distinct figures for the price point (the quoted number 18 includes duplicates of the same figures).

While the Sisk Hoplites are kind of generically menacing-looking and Greek-looking, the art is absolutely excellent, and the remainder of the set is exceptional (Riftblade, specifically, may be one of my favorite pieces of fantasy art).

Torn World's Heroes of Torn
by Cynthia C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/06/2013 13:07:43
This is a really spectacular set of standups; while technically it's specific to the Torn Worlds universe, the majority of these characters could pretty much be used for any fantasy or fantasy-styled steampunk (I'm especially thinking of Victoriana here, which has a similar mixture of sapient species). They're evocative, the sort of standups that can produce instant character ideas (which is also good for Ganesha Games' Tales of Blades and Heroes, which uses a "start with the miniature" character generation system).

The only "bad" thing is that some of these illustrations are good enough that I want physical miniatures instead, and I know those won't be out for months (possibly longer, for those of us who missed the Kickstarter for them).

DEADLY MISSIONS: Sector 15 Sci-Fi Core Rules
by David O. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/13/2013 16:24:15
This game can be played over and over again and kept fresh every time. There is lots of variety with characters and baddies alike. I think it would be more fun to play the baddies myself. They are inherently cooler.

ERA OF WAR: Midian Knights
by Tiago H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/16/2013 10:11:02
A great set of chaotic warriors. There is a good variety of Beast-men troops in this set. From meek hooded Rat-men to enormous centauric Rhino-men, and everything in between, "loaded to bear" with plasma rifles and other ultra-tech weapons and armor. And a big menacing Chimera on top of that.

Myself, I plan using these minis as alien enemies on a X-COM table I'm preparing. Specially the Snake-men.

An excelent set of Sci-Fi figures with an oriental feeling. High-tech samurai armor and plasma weapons, meditating monks conjuring balls of lightning, black suited ninja, and the oriental dragon is really a figure to stand out.

Era Of War: Camel FAAV
by Tiago H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/16/2013 09:54:04
Best thing about this model: it is super simple to build. The most complex way of building it is a simple box, and if this is too much work for you, there's the option to build it as a single 2D stand up. And yet after built it is very good looking, has a presence on the table.

Second best thing: it is designed for painting it with whatever color you want. Need woodland cammo? Get light brown and green felt tip pens. If you need it to go faster, get a red felt tip paint, and there it goes!

ERA OF WAR: Warriors Of Tauria
by Tiago H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/16/2013 09:43:27
A really good set of miniatures! These Minotaurs are massive and imposing when compared to the other figures on the table. Good to make memorable encounters, more yet if after a tough fight with the Minotaur soldiers the party has to pass through the leaders like Angus the Black and Gregor the Conqueror (What is that on his hand? Is that a cannon!? OMG IT IS, RUN!!!)

My only critique is that the borders of the figures are a little weird and subdued, maybe an artifact of the scanning process in making these figures. Nothing that can't be fixed with a graphics editor, or even with a felt tip pen, after the figure is printed.

TORN WORLD's Torn Armor Set One
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/21/2013 08:55:50
In full disclosure: I have known and interacted with the publisher and I have received a copy for evaluation and review.

This is a set of twelve distinct miniatures in dynamic poses. The illustrations are high quality: excellent colors, shading, proportions, facial expressions. The two largest figures (one of each army) show some pixellation on the screen and a bit of those artifacts are noticeable when printing, if you look up close. The choice of colors and shading also makes these good for printing at reduced scales. The set also includes bases of different sizes for the miniatures, with stone or dried earth textures.

The figures are laid out on four pages, with some repeated copies. Printing three of those pages once and the other one twice yields a total of 47 figures. Of those, 39 make up the two armies mentioned in the product description and the remaining 8 are extras due to the repeated printing. The figures are well-aligned so cutting and folding is simple. The figures are not surrounded by a black border as is the case in some miniature products. This way, they can be cut closer or farther from the figure's outline according to the preferences, patience and skill of the user. However, those who prefer that black border will have the extra work of filling it manually after cutting. Because of the poses of the figures and the way they were laid out on the pages, I do not think it is possible to just cut a rectangle frame around each one.

I can see these figures used in RPGs and wargames. As the miniatures do not have distinct backs, it might be necessary to mark the bases to indicate front facing, depending on use. It would have been nice to have a sheet with one each of the normal-sized figures (e.g. one javelineer, one hoplite, one of each hero...) as an ink-saving option for those who want to use the figures as individual characters in a game.

by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/28/2012 13:02:38
This is a great model. Easy to build with 2D and 3D options, looks good and has a low price. I've had no trouble building it at both regular (28mm) scale and at 50% size to use with 15mm minis. I hope that more vehicles in the same build style are added to this product line.
