One of the most complete and enjoyable sourcebooks I have ever seen. I have friends who lived in Japan that use it as a reference. It is attractive and very usable.

An excellent product - plenty of information and detail and made better by the fact that the main action rules are available as a free download.

LIKED: The details about life living in the wild west - the equipment list even includes prices for a physician to remove bullets

DISLIKED: nothing

Action! Classics: The War of the Worlds (d20, Action!)
by Michael T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/28/2005 00:00:00
War of the Worlds is back in vogue, thanks to two folks you might have heard of: Spielberg and Cruise. Thanks to their efforts, the threat of aliens blowing us up for no good reason at all is once again on our minds. Instead of an attack from above, the movie switched gears to put the killing machines right in our midst. Despite that change, the concept is the same: big fish eat little fish and space is a huge pond.

This sourcebook is meant to bring the setting to life by drawing straight from the source material. This means that it requires a bit of updating for some campaigns unless they are set in the Victorian-era (ooh, maybe D20 Adventure!). It?s also a dual-statted book for both the Action! System and the D20 system. Besides the story itself (available for free here http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/world/readfile?fk_files=984
61), there?s information on how to play the setting of War of the Worlds as well as rules on weapons, equipment, alien war machines, and of course the Martians themselves.

LIKED: There?s nothing quite like getting a blow-by-blow of H.G. Well's original novel. The authors are obviously passionate about the novel and closely adhere to the events in the tale. They also provide information for branching off from the main storyline to create an entire campaign. Throughout, the entire book is illustrated with appropriate black-and-white artwork. It?s a handsome book.

DISLIKED: Unfortunately, this is one of those books that gives dual-statted books a bad name. It?s not really ?dual? at all. Sure, there are D20 stats listed?in Chapter Three: The Martians. Prior to that point, all the rules for new skills, the military, weapons of the era, and the war machines themselves are ONLY for the Action! system. This is a heresy in the publishing world. Want to tick off D20 gamers and ensure they don?t buy anything else that?s dual-statted? Give D20 short shrift in the book. I wanted stats for the Martian war machines dammit!

A pity. It?s a professional book that?s tightly focused on the Action! system. In that regard, it?s much more useful. But they should have offered the D20 rules as a free supplement as opposed to touting it as a dual-statted book. Bad form.

The Village of Briarton (Action!, d20)
by Arthur G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/12/2005 00:00:00
This is a very nice product. A place you could base you players in if you so desired or just have them pass through if that's what you want. There are lots of interesting plot hooks. The histories of the NPCs are detailed and well thought out. The artwork is not consistant and a bit uneven, but even so-so portraits help to imagine a character. I would have liked to have seen a few more floorplans and the artwork on the floorplans and maps is a bit sterile, but these are minor quibbles given the low sale price.

LIKED: good descriptions of NPCs, good plothooks

DISLIKED: could use more floorplans and drawings of the outside of buildings and a consistent style in the artwork

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied

The Thing in Radley Manor (Action!, d20)
by Jeff R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/20/2005 00:00:00
*****This review contains spoilers.*****

The Thing in Radley Manor takes a reasonable villain group (drug dealing bikers) and weds it to a nice little investigation sequence and the prospect of a big firefight in a haunted house. It took one session for my PC group to tear through this module, but I could see a more cautious group needing two runs. This module can easily fit into any campaign that is involved with occult investigation or crime investigation but it also contains prospective hooks for other types of campaigns. I would definitely run this adventure again in a suitable d20 Modern campaigns.

LIKED: The Scooby Doo angle: there is no "Thing" in Radley Manor, instead the reputedly haunted house is being used by ordinary criminals. This made the module a great change of pace for my magic & monster heavy campaign. I also liked the fact that the module is generic enough to simply drop into my campaign with no real modification.

I also liked the fact that most of the game mechanics were placed in easy-to-find sidebars. The sidebars are separately color-coded for d20M and Action! systems, making it easy to ignore the ones that don't apply to your game.

DISLIKED: I was surprised by two omissions in this module: no separate stat block for the master villain and no interior map of Radley Manor. I was able to make do without these things but a more prep-intensive GM might need to scrounge or make a map and stat up the leader prior to the start of the session.

Gunslingers: Wild West Action!

Very stylish and excellent use of the Action! System. If you're looking for a western game with loads of style and feel about it then this is the one.

Masses of background detail and lists of "stuff" help to bring the system to life.

LIKED: Feel, style, system and details

DISLIKED: Having to buy the full version of Action! system to really get the most from it. Luckily it's only a couple of bucks!

Very detailed, enjoyed the pictures of the weapons especially. A benefit to my d20 Wild West game. This system isn't d20 though, but good reference/ideas/source material.

LIKED: The artwork is good and the detailed weapon listings.

DISLIKED: Not d20, but an easily adapted system with their d20 conversion.

Action! Classics: The War of the Worlds (d20, Action!)
by Chris H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/27/2004 00:00:00
This was rather disappointing, pedestrian and dull. Sure, you get an illustrated version of the novel, but anyone who's interested in this supplement will already have the book, and even if they don't it is easy and cheap to buy. The actual gaming content is remarkably thin on the ground, confining itself to simple stats and presentations of Victorian military equipment. There's almost no expansion on the Martians, their technology, plans or capabilities. There's no speculation on what might have been, no alternative campaigns, material for later invasions or even ideas on what might have happened in the rest of the world. Much as I applaud the idea of doing a supplement on the War of the Worlds, this was an entirely wasted opportunity. Better material can be found online for free, if you do a search for "War of the Worlds RPG"
