A Magical Society: Beast Builder
by Sarah S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/21/2005 00:00:00
This is one of the most impressive products I have bought in a very long time. By using real-world ecology as a base, this book explains in detail how to make logical, interesting and believable creatures. The rules for creating balanced creatures is the best I have seen anywhere. As a bonus, there is a list of monster parts with their uses and value. A great book for DMs who want to create unique worlds for their campaigns.

Homerun. ERP has done it again. Everything they touch over there is golden as far as I am concerned. This product is so far beyond wonderful I cannot even say enough good things about it. There is an incredible amount of insight and detail crammed into this product, my only wish is that I were independently wealthy so that other commitments didn't get in the way of being able to spend a full week of uninterupted study of such a glorious product.

A Magical Society: Beast Builder
by Derek H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/01/2005 00:00:00
The best book on creature creating ever for d20. It looks at ecology and function within a setting (is it suppost to help, eat, or distract the party among many others), the special abilities section has tons of ideas, there is a short section on monster parts, and the advice on templates is awesome.

The only part I thought was wasted space is the random charts for special abilities. Other than making a creature of chaos, it really has little value.

I love making creature ideas and alien ecologies and have to say this is the most valuable book I have and will buy this year.

I suggest that you look at both Silverthorne's and Green Ronin's template books as great companion books to this work. With all 3 (or 5), no DM will ever be needing another monster again. This will provide the basis and those will help you modify the creatures you create (if needed).

Seeds: Post-Apocalyptic
by Jason C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/30/2005 00:00:00
As with most of the Seeds products, the quality of the seeds varies dramatically - some are great, some are pretty lame. Nevertheless, for the price and for what's presented, even the pickiest GM can find at least a dozen that they'll be able to use.

Because some of the seeds are somewhat specialized, it may be even more useful for designing a campaign than incorporating into an already-running one.

LIKED: Good layout, solid presentation.

DISLIKED: Areas for improvement: I'd like to see some of the seeds fleshed out in perhaps several different ways, to show how to use the ideas in the book. Also, some manner of organization other than 'a big jumbled list' would be great - item-based seeds, location-based seeds, character-based seeds, and so on.

QUALITY: Acceptable

Monster Geographica: Marsh & Aquatic
by Dennis O. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/28/2005 00:00:00
The Monster Geographica series has become my second most used source for creatures in my game, just behind the Monster Manual. This is a supplement that is far more useful as a PDF than it would be in print - I can copy and paste to whatever I am working on, so I can use this with all my adventure writing tools.

Rather than pull out favorite creatures, this is a book of recycled monsters after all, I will comment on the format, which is the best that I have yet encountered for this type of work.

Thoroughly bookmarked, breakdown by CR, Type, and alphabetical order, it is easy to work out an encounter for any level adventure.

There are no illos beyond the covers and the splash page, and no statblocks for the creatures, but there are around 200 entries in the book, so it covers a lot of ground, err, muck and water.

LIKED: The format is wonderful, having the works broken down by environment, and their contens broken down by CR is unbelievably useful!

DISLIKED: No stat blocks. No SRD Creatures.

QUALITY: Very Good

A Magical Society: Beast Builder
by Lisa H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/28/2005 00:00:00
This is yet another product from Expeditious Retreat Press I am glad I bought. The information in the book is very well written, and presented in an easy to use and understand manner.

LIKED: I really appreciated the information about how the various items in the stat block can affect the CR of a creature.

DISLIKED: It would have been nice, in the section about the different types and subtypes, if there were examples of creatures for that type. For example, listing kobolds under the Reptilian subtype. When brainstorming new creatures, having those examples could spark an idea.

Monster Geographica: Underground
by Geoff K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/19/2005 00:00:00
ERP has done a great job of compiling and updating a ton (ca 200) of underground monsters, and have made it available for an amazing price. I commend them for simplifying an adventure writer's life. The book is meticulously bookmarked alphabetically and by type and CR. The handful of Flora and Fauna entries add a nice touch; I found the stonemites an interesting concept. This book, combined with another purchase I recently made (Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary), give me enough new creature possibilities to keep me busy for a long time!

LIKED: Tons of cool, open-game creatures for a good price.

DISLIKED: No illustrations -- for this price, it would have been impossible (so, I still give the book 5 stars). But, I like the content so much, I'd pay for an illustrated version.

QUALITY: Excellent

Seeds: Fantasy II
by Scott B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/11/2005 00:00:00
I was a bit worried when the first and third idea in this set were essentially the same, but fortunately that was not a sign of things to come. Like the first set, it's full of original ideas. I counted 34 seperate seeds. They won't all resonate with you, but many should. While reading it, I mentally sketched out two encounters, two one-shot adventures, plus a new campaign. That's not bad for US$0.50.

The product includes both four colour and black and white versions. Both are in landscape. It would have been nice if the print version was in portrait.

LIKED: Well written, well presented.

DISLIKED: Too many Gygaxian references. I don't run a high fantasy campaign.

QUALITY: Very Good

A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe

This is just a terrific piece of work! The information on how and why Medieval holdings work and who makes them work is invaluable, whether PC's acquire a keep and lands of their own or are interacting with someone else's.

LIKED: I really loved the detailing of the various professions and pursuits it takes to keep a holding going. You could create years of campaigns around the information in this document.

DISLIKED: Nada.

I found this product to be more than helpful in getting started along the path to creating my personal fantasy world for my own home games.

LIKED: There is more than enough information presented to build a world of any detail level you desire.

DISLIKED: It would have been nice if the on-screen version were landscape instead of portait format. A minor complaint, but worth mentioning considering the length of the book.

A very detailed product, well worth the money. It contains exactly what it says, and in full. It gives the basis to build up an historically accurate society, down to the smallest farm, with the added info about how to handle magic, magic-users and other fantasy elements.

LIKED: The level of accuracy is *awesome*.

DISLIKED: Not a blessed thing.

Wow...

I am absolutely astounded by the depth of information offered here. I am only about a third of the way through this book but it is worth every penny and then some.

I look forward to the rest of the book and the mapping book also offered through RPG Now.
