A Sky Full of Ships

Nice set of large scale Space combat rules. Runs smoothly, plays quickly and has loads of fan created ships for Babylon 5, Star Trek (all eras), Battlestar Galactica, Starblazers, Full Thrust and more. Big thumbs up from me!

Decent set of rules for large-scale battles, but lack of chrome in the basic rules might turn off some players. Though the advanced rules have plenty of options, they're an odd assortment of stuff. Fighter rules were particularly confusing, unfortunately (my group was attempting a Star Wars Minis replacement).

LIKED: Speed of play, ease of use. Providing a free basic version helped me quickly get new players running.

DISLIKED: Lack of flavor and rules rigor. Also, while odds-ratio CRT systems are old hat to grognards like me, the current generation of gamers has likely never seen them before.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
Very cool ruleset for fleet-action games. Comes with full ship-creation rules, and a relaxed attitude.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
ASFoS is the best large fleet action game I have played. The rules are easy to understand and rely on simple mechanics for gameplay. There is heaps of support for the game at the yahoo group and various websites. The rules are generic enough to adapt to any background you are likely to encounter, but not that generic that you lose flavour. Turns consist of a movement phase, combat phase and the turn end. You require normal D6 dice (two different colors), rulers and miniatures. You also need Ship displays to keep track of damage. The rules come with some sample ship counters and their displays. The Yahoo Group has a Ship Generator for creating your own ship displays. You can play scenarios or "Even points battles" (called pickup games).

If you want large actions with lots of ships on the table, you can not go past ASFoS!

LIKED: The fast easy gameplay with large amounts of ships on the board. The large range of advanced rules to help flesh out your background. The ability to design your own ship types. The way you can start simple but progress to more involved rules and gameplay.

DISLIKED: The Rulebook is a bit plain. Black and white graphics and the standard document style don't make it enticing for a new player.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
