World Gauntlet Federation

I saw a post by the designer on http://superdupergames.org and was intrigued by this game. At first I thought the game was sold physically, and I thought I may eventually get it, but I recently realized it's being sold as PnP, so yesterday I finally bought it. After all, it's cheap and doesn't have too many pieces to assemble...

Today I printed the tiles on adhesive paper and after laminating and mounting, they look really nice (I have to say getting this game ready to play takes very little time). Then I gave the game a short try with my son (just a couple of turns until my younger son decided to eat the pieces and we had to quickly put everything away :) )

So, later tonight we managed to play a short (just 4 obstacles) game. This time my gf joined, so we were three. The game didn't last long, but I got to appreciate a bit what it is about, and did enjoy it.

I'll explain a bit how the game plays: The game is a race through an obstacle course. Each tile is an obstacle of a different kind. Some require strength, some agility. Also each obstacle has a different suit from the standard deck of cards and a difficulty number. Players create simple characters with different skill sets and try to win the race.

A turn consists on either running or resting. When resting, the player recovers hit points and cards. When running, the player must set a goal (how many obstacles will he try to overcome in one go). To overcome a tile, the player rolls 2 dice and adds his relevant skill number. If his total number equals or exceeds the difficulty number for that obstacle, then he overcomes it and goes on to try the next obstacle until he reaches his goal. Else, the player can play one or more cards from his hand to reach the number (numbered cards can be used if their suit matches the suit from the obstacle, and figure cards have special powers). If finally he didn't managed to pass the test, the player will get hit and play passes to the next one.

Points in the game are "Crowd Pleasing Points" and are received for each accomplishment, although the most recent ones can be lost if the player doesn't manage to complete his current run. Although the goal of the game is to finish the race first, it's important to get as many CPPs as possible, as they will be used to advance your character for future games.

Also, each tile may have some special text that may offer other challenges or bonuses to the player on that tile.

So, from what little I've played, I think I like the game. It seems to be a lot about risk and hand management. The RPGish character development and combat is fun (I love games that use RPG elements as parts of a different kind of game) and although it's quite random, you can affect the results to an extent. But don't be surprised when you fail after trying three obstacles with only one card in your hand :)

You can also get CPPs by hitting other players as you pass them (as long as you managed to get a weapon) and each time a new player takes the lead, he'll also get some points from the player that was in the lead before, so there's a "take that" element to the game too.

Players are also encouraged to offer CPPs to other players in exchange of cards they need to overcome their current obstacle, so there's a small negotiation aspect too which can be fun.

I still have to play the game more, but I can say I like how the different elements of the game are put together. From the theme with the RPG elements (campaign included) to the way standard cards are used and how it all interacts.

What I can say for sure is that it's worth its price :)
