#1 With a Bullet Point: 6 New Exotic and Martial Swords
Publisher: Rogue Genius Games
by Joshua G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/22/2012 01:29:11

Weighing in with the familiar three page, landscape format, with material presented in a three column format with two pieces of B&W artwork, the cover piece far outweighing the second piece, we are given a handful of new and interesting weapons this time around. As well as a full descriptive breakdown of each weapon along with game mechanics, we are presented with an easy to read table in the same vein as the equipment lists from Core books, making it that much easier for those GM's out there who like to keep a master list of gear and weapons available to import these into such a list.

All six of these new weapons are in fact swords, based upon real world weaponry, and are named after their counterparts here in reality to make a Google search for imagery all the easier, as we are given no imagery for the weaponry here.

The Cinquedea is a long dagger/short sword depending upon the culture you encounter it within. The Estoc is a piercing sword with no edge due to the oddity of its blade's design. The Executioner's Sword is similar in nature to a great sword, although it has a squared end making the weapon more suited for chopping than thrusting. The Kampilan known as a double pointed sword due to a forward pointing spike near its tip, this weapon has many differing qualities in regards to blade weight and length, as well as pommel size, that allow it the disarm, sunder and trip qualities. TheManople is the classic gauntlet attached blade, allowing for one to fight with a bladed weapon without actually holding one, adding a measure of their strength to the damage done with successful attacks. The Swordstaff would be the six foot length of wood, bearing a blade of the nature of a short sword on one end, allowing the wielder to switch back and forth between using it as a reach weapon or not.

Is the game already filled to the brim with weaponry? Yes. Is there anything here that is a must have, no, not really. But, I am a big fan of variety, and I am also an advocate of the concept that there's always room for more weapons, as options inspire creativity. So under that vein of thinking, yes, this particular Bullet Point is extremely useful, and deserves the full 5 star rating, as it delivered exactly what it promised to do.

#1 With a Bullet Point: 7 Feats For Flying Foes
Publisher: Rogue Genius Games
by Joshua G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/22/2012 00:29:05

Weighing in with the standard three pages for the Bullet Point series with a three column approach to delivering the actual game material on a landscape orientated page. Three pieces of artwork, all B&W with only one really grabbing my eye this time, sorry Owen. Editing as always was top notch, as I have come to expect from the crew at SGG.

One of the nicer things I find in regards to the Bullet Point series is not only that they are insanely cheap and useful, but that they often times are delivering more than what they profess to from their title alone. Case in point, this particular PDF promises us 7 Feats, but also includes a CR adjustment ruling if one wished to use them as additional monster powers for flying creatures, leaving feat slots open while increasing the overall danger of your creature.

Aerobatics allows you to add a percentage of your fly speed to your CMD total.
Dogfighting allows for a small handful of bonuses all dependent upon whether or not you began combat in the air, and what you are doing wile there...a fairly useful feat for those min/maxers out there with a love of stacking and chaining feats and abilities to get the most bang for their buck. Dive Bomb allows you to add a bonus amount of damage to a successful ranged weapon attack for added velocity of diving towards targeted foe before releasing weapon. Drift allows you to use the momentum of a physical blow to essentially gain a 5' step. Improved Flyby Attack as Flyby Attack, without that annoying AoO. Slashing Wind lets you make you combine your attack with a single move, for a negative to the overall attack rolls. Strafe allows you to add bonus damage points per your flight speed as long as you attack whilst flying.

It is rare that I find anything negative to say in regards to the Bullet Point series, and this will not be an exception to that norm, as this PDF and addition to the line is well worth the price of admission and an excellent addition to any GM's toolbox for both their own creatures and as options for flying player characters/NPCs. Yet another out of the park 5 star.

#1 With a Bullet Point: 5 Fireball Feats (Full Clip!)
Publisher: Rogue Genius Games
by Joshua G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/22/2012 00:05:39

Continuing what has got to be one of my favorite continuing lines of RPG support material, this Bullet Point brings us a handful of interesting twists for that age old classic, the Fireball spell. Giving us five feats designed to alter or enhance the effects of either the Fireball spell, or any other evocation of similar nature that your GM would be willing to apply these feats to, this Bullet Point goes a long way towards proving that the Fireball spell is still viable at the table.

Following the standard three column landscape format, the cover page has changed slightly in that the cover image is not quite as large, and this particular Bullet Point has four pages instead of the standard three, but otherwise the format is identical to the familiar look and feel fans of the Bullet Point series will expect to see. Editing as always is above the board and solid. Three pieces of art, two color one B&W, all stock but good pieces.

Up first is the Environmental Effects feat, detailing just what happens to the terrain and environment around the spell effect area, I mean honestly, you just set off a freaking fireball, has no one ever wondered what happens to the surrounding material caught in that fire? Broken down by sections such as Ice/Water (Steam steam the wonderful steam), Metal (super heated for additional rounds of heat damage), Wood/Plants (dazzling blaze of inferno light) or Dirt/Earth/Stone (vaporized earth does tend to release gasses ya know).

Cometstrike allows for a more aimed missile of fiery goodness, tightening the overall effect into a comet of fire that explodes with a smaller radius. Fiery Wrath takes selective targeting to a new place, in that you hand over control of your Fireball spell to a summoned Fire Elemental and actually pick your targets within the range of the spell's affected area, thereby allowing you to “skip” over allies and friends, leaving them unscathed. Implosion goes off as a normal Fireball, but blows itself out as it exhausts all available air instantly, thereby creating a vacuum effect that can pull targeted foes to the center of its blast radius.

Shockwave works as an opposite to Implosion, in that the feat allows your Fireball spell to push targets away from its center.

Another excellent addition to the Bullet Point series, and further proof as to why this series continues to grow. Well worth the price of admission, and an easy 5 star rating.

Infamous Adversaries: Ischadra, Grandmother of Assassins
Publisher: Total Party Kill Games
by Joshua G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/06/2012 21:13:50

The latest Infamous Adversaries line addition is by far the best so far, and quite frankly, is going to be hard to top. This is one seriously creepy, nightmare inspiring NPC to unleash upon a play group. Ischadra, Grandmother of Assassins is a soulbound corpse doll....yeah, let that sink in....a doll, that kills. Now, we're not talking Hollywood cheeze here, no freaking Chucky dolls, oh no, this little lady was crafted from the skin of corpses, she was built to house the soul of killer resurrected for the purpose of trapping her within this construct....shame for the clerics who performed the ritual that she was better than they were. I've been patiently waiting (OK, almost patiently) for this book since I first saw the cover art awhile back, and I'm happy to state, this character does this artwork justice. She is everything twisted and wrong you could ever want as a GM, seriously. A timeless assassin honing her skills through out the generations hiding in plain sight as an ugly little doll. Communicating telepathically she bonds with children she chooses for various reasons, either to train to eventually hand over to the assassin guild in whom she is in league, or as a cog in the vast information network she has built, or even to use a child as her means of gaining entry to a target. This little lady is so not one you want to ever offend, ever.

As always the TPK guys bring forth not just one incarnation of their adversary of choice, this time giving us CR 14, 17 and 20 versions of Ischadra. And yes folks, even an immortal killer doll needs a support cast, and oh what a support cast she has. The demented doll maker, and part time homicidal maniac, Japareth, who operates as a trusted friend and combat medic (hey, she might break a part, lol)... or Noni, the little girl who currently carries around this demented toy. Example stats are given for no less than four different levels of assassin for the faction known as the Order of the Ebon Hand. Keeping tabs? We get a killer doll, a psycho dollmaker, the kid who currently carries the doll, the faction to whom the doll is aligned, sounds like a pretty good package deal, right? Well, there's more...how about the God of Murder, yeah, hows that for more? An NPC, her support cast, a new faction and a new deity to add to your campaign world. Need more? Not a problem, how about hooks, Ischadra's seriously pimped out pigsticker, what you assumed she killed with a typical off the rack kind of blade? NO! Her's is all kinds of ugliness, wrapped up in a sinister illusion...and let us not forget her soulstone, that which allows her to exist in the first place. Any GM worth their salt has encountered and dealt with a soulstone (or something very similar) by now, but how many of us have handled one personally blessed by God of Murder himself, hmmm? Oh yeah, she's that kind of wicked, blessed by her god, literally.

I could get into the editing issues, of which I saw truly only a few minor things...some justified text areas could have benefited from a condensing or text spacing to avoid huge space gaps....The Spectral Host statblock has it's header bar in the middle of the italicized descriptive text....and the occasional spell name that should probably be italicized ( I think there were two, total). But honestly, two words non italicized (not an issue when you consider the words are both in the right section and anyone can look at them and realize what they are), justification causes spacing issues, pure and simple. I personally hate them, but I understand it happens, and doesn't change anything regarding content...so, out of the three things I listed that leaves one actual screw up, and that was a header for a statblock ending up in the middle of that statblocks description....alright guys, put out your hands, I'm gonna have to smack you...no, no, I'm sorry it had to come to this, but take it like men dangit!

Seriously, a solid character design, and that's what products like this are all about. Giving us, the consumer, something to not only challenge our players, but scare the living crap out of them. And yes, there are Hero Lab files to support everything in here, so for the Hero Lab users in the house, there is much love here.

Final thoughts on this are a resounding yes, you must show Ischadra some love and buy this, otherwise she might come visit you next. A well earned 5 out of 5 guys, and a must have in the arsenal. Well done!

Inkwell Stock Art: Drider
Publisher: Inkwell Ideas
by Joshua G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/06/2012 11:07:48

Anyone familiar with the Drow within fantasy gaming know the Drider, and what to expect visually. Offering a few variations from the normal with the widow's mark on the abdomen, as well as what appears to be almost a serpent underbelly gracing the torso, and of course the odd "hair" do that could easily be piping/wiring for a scifi setting. Delivered as a PSD with a white background, transparent image on top, this image works well for both a fantasy or scifi setting, and is yet another solid offering from the Inkwell camp.

One of the nicest things (besides quality of art) included within the Inkwell stock art purchases is the insanely flexible license, which allows for modification of said art (as long as you don't end up making the imagery look bad of course). I point this out as I, personally, will be removing the odd wiring/hair growth from around this drider's head, as it looks odd to me, although upon zooming in it appears it might be a crown, headpiece, bizarre tiara kind of thing...not sure. Point is, the license allows for flexibility, which is a huge boon for small publishers, and yet another serious perk when working with Inkwell images.

Needing drow currently, I was more than happy to see full color pieces of drow become available, and two for the price of one is always a well appreciated perk, I just wish it wasn't quite so obvious the artist used the same basic body frame for both images...Oh well, not a huge issue in the end, as there are enough variations in the two images.

Easily one of the better Treant images I have seen, the fact that its available for small publishers to use makes it all gravy. Inkwell's line of stock art truly is highly impressive, and are a must to be picked up.

The fact that the image comes as a 2 layer .psd is an absolute perk, as for some layouts, you just don't want a background, and having the capacity to easily drop the background out is a serious time saver, and a nice option.

One of the best things I can say regarding this addition tot he Portfolio line is that it does not follow the standard stereotype for characters in that we have two gentlemen who are not the "classic" Euro-fantasy type right off the bat, and that is always a good thing to see, as adventures should take players all over a globe, and art is needed to represent far more than one culture.

As always the art level of quality is exceptional, anyone familiar with the portfolio series should know what to expect in regards to style of art, and there is at least one free sample portfolio available for those not in the know to get a feel. Well worth the price, this portfolio gives us two characters with full scenery, something I would love to see more of, as those often times make some of the best layouts in a PDF.
