I absolutely adore this source book! It offers a fun addition to any D20 system by giving you the option to add some really great quirks to your character. Said quirks not only make your character more interesting, they can also make playing your character more challenging! Just imagine playing a DnD Fighter who's Allergic to Magic or a Star Wars Jedi who's a Bot Hater. The Jester Dragon's Guide to Defects even includes some excellent metagame defects like Curses Fate or Existentially Ignorant which will affect the player instead of the character!

Regardless of what type of D20 game you're playing, you'll find many defects within this book that you can use. It spans literally all of the game genres available. On top of having all of these great quirks to choose from, the book is also wonderfully illustrated. The comical depictions of many of the defects will keep you highly amused as you read through this fantastic guide!

If you're looking for a way to add some more laughs to your game, the Jester Dragon's Guide to Defects is the way to go!

Good book, defects as an "anti-feat" is a straight forward and easy to include mechanic for adding character flaws. There's a nice balance of flaws for fantasy and sci-fi, with many of them being relevant for both sorts of settings. The art is whimsical and fits the tongue-in-cheek tone of many of the defects. There are a lot of defects included, it will probably be a while before I have to use the same one twice.

First off, this product requires the central D20/3e mechanics to function. None of it is general enough to use in other systems out of the gate. It uses a concept that screams to be system neutral and hacks away all the useful bits then haphazardly mashes multiple genres here and there.

The artwork is fun and the writing okay. It mimics the 3 stats blocks perfectly.

If you want some arguably fun defects for your D20 campaign? There isn't anything in here you can't think of yourself but you might get an idea of two. If you want this for any other type of gaming, pass.

It should be noted in their description that it's a D20 only product and despite many thinking it might be useful outside that little box, it would take more work than writing it all yourself to utilize it that way.

Great idea though.

“The Jester Dragon’s Guide to Defects,” is a must-have resource for d20/OGL players. Feats are wonderful ways by which you can distinguish your character from someone else’s but all that really accomplishes is telling you how that character is a badass in his own right and what niche of badassery he fills. But characters without flaws don’t have, well, character. This book fixes this and is a well designed product that provides a great way to make truly unique characters. This book fills in what I would say is a major hole in the 3.5/OGL rules set. Other game systems have rules for assigning characters disadvantageous qualities that give you a bit more oomph when building stories. Somehow that got overlooked with OGL games. Not only will this book make you laugh, it will provide you with some great tools to take your game to the next level of storytelling. To help lighten the mood, the art is as humorous as the defects. One of my favorite entries being “Skyclad” with a Amazonian woman with her naughty bits covered by a flying cat. William Thrasher did a great job making the art as fun as possible. Given some of the levity that the use of defects could bring without the inclusion of some comedy, it’s a perfect complement to the material.
