Ultramodern5 (5th Edition)
Publisher: Dias Ex Machina Games
by GamingRonin @. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/11/2017 18:36:22

From the launch of 5th I hoped a modern version of the rules would be released. What ultramodern5 offers is so much more than just converted and reskined
D&D races, classes, and backgrounds.

The meat and potatoes of this product is the character build options, so I'll mostly be focused on that. I think anyone looking for a review will be wanting more details on those options.

There is a section for equipment, adventuring, and antagonists. There is also adventures included at the end of the product and even sample chapters.

Characters in Ultramodern5 are comprised of Race, Lifepath, Ladders, and Classes. This is why I find Ultramodern5 so special, it's sheer number of character options.

While everyone is assumed human there is still a system for benefits and shortcomings to add some diversity from character to character. Lifepaths are a reworking of backgrounds, to include a way of life and social standings. There are 11 backgrounds to choose from.

Ladders are how a character lives it's life. They are optional abilities characters can gain in the place of magic or other powers for non- fantasy settings. Any ladder can be mixed with any class. There are 7 total ladders. The ladders are born leader, juggernaut, runner, savant, survivor, veteran, and warrior.

Classes are about what you would expect, there are 10 classes. They are Face, Grounder, Gunslinger, Heavy, Infiltrator, Marshal, Martial artist, Medic, Sniper, and Techi.

Classes are then again defined further with 24 archetypes. Archetypes are not tied to specific class, if a character meets all the requirements they can take the archetype. The archetypes are anti-hero, authority, banner head, brawler, brother of blood, cleaner, country gunman, diplomat, driver, field machinist, field medic, grandmaster, gun dancer, infantry support specialist, machine of war, man at arms, militarist, pathfinder, pistolero, recon intelligence, ring fighter, sapper, selfless protector, skirmisher, and suave.

The sheer number of combinations is brilliant. For two players to end up with exactly the same character it has to be on purpose.

While I'm at it I would like to address a criticism I've seen for UM5. That some weapons, specifically guns don't do enough damage. I want to chime in here.

How UM5 handles guns is that training is what makes guns dangerous. Anyone can fire a sniper rifle, a trained sniper is always deadly with a good rifle. Not just do I appreciate this and find it to my taste I feel it's right for a class based system. Also it's right for a game based on D&D, anyone can use a dagger, but a rogue with a dagger is deadly. Class abilities build on core damage.

Fantasy AGE Basic Rulebook

Very good generic fantasy system. same system used in the titans grave web series on geek and sundries. Although slightly modified it is also the core system in the Dragon Age roleplaying game.

It's a good basic system. the real charm of the system is the stunt system. on a roll of doubles you get between 1 and 6 stunt points to spend on a menu of special maneuvers.

A steal for the price. Touches on one aspect of the cypher system I was wondering how I would implement. The GM intrusion. Great advice on how to use them, and use them creatively.

When Worlds Collide: Converting Numenera and The Strange
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Joey M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/25/2014 19:59:13

When worlds collide is a short and to the point document. Its all about using numenera materian in The Strange and the other way around. How to use foci from one game in the other. I would say in this way its more about rules conversion than it is about "fluff" or story reason. Which is covered but just slightly. Over all it was a good purchase since I will be using Numenera in my The Strange games.

I ordered the PDF+Cards, the cards are beautiful. These cards are not a must have item to play, you could get by without them. That being said I'm very happy with this purchase. I feel like the cards add flavor and I really enjoy them.

I cant recommend this game enough if you want to run espionage or paramilitary style games. The system is fast and intuitive. There is even a supplement Neumann protocol that brings Covert ops into the future, great for cyberpunk.

Gaslight Victorian Fantasy 2nd Edition (OGL Edition)
Publisher: Battlefield Press
by Joey M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/28/2014 23:49:59

This book is amazing. I got this book after enjoying the savageworlds version. This is the first OGL book I have read in a long time that could draw me back into running d20. Its a full and complete book nothing else needed to play. This book could easily be used to run all kinds of Victorian as well as modern fantasy. This is what d20 Modern should have been. If I do run any OGL setting this is my new OGL main rule set. So much good in this book. The racial feat trees are just the touch of customization that is missing from a lot of OGL books.

Gaslight Victorian Fantasy 2nd Edition (Savage Worlds Edition)

Any one who knows me knows I love Victorian era mystery and horror. What stands out to me in Gaslight is its information on secret societies and hidden places. Every page gives me ideas for games I would like to run. Again for its size, this product is full of campaign starters. From secret societies pulling strings behind the scenes, to creatures of the night walking the streets of London. Magic, Monsters and Dark agendas. Its everything I could ask for in a Victorian era source book.

As a side note. I started off thinking Gaslight would make a great supplement to PEG's very own Rippers setting. Which I love. Now I feel Rippers would make a great supplement for Gaslight. Gaslight could take Rippers games well beyond the Rippers world. Gaslight has a (in my opinion) better social standings rules than Rippers does as well.

If your a Victorian era fan as I am, I don't think you can go wrong with Gaslight.

Here is my favorite line out of the entire book. "The head of MI 7 is the quiet yet brilliant Mycroft Holmes, elder brother of the noted detective." ......I'm SOLD!

Krampus - a system neutral holiday NPC
Publisher: Troll in the Corner
by Joey M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/06/2012 14:23:21

This little write up is a good jumping start for a holiday based adventure. Or some modern take on the Krampus. (which I may use when I get my Grimm game going again) Its a fun 3 page write up with all the basics covered. The only complaint I would have is the font for the body of the text. Its a little hard to read with the parchment style background. Reading it on my Kindle I had to zoom in a bit. And even on the desk top it was easier to read at 120% zoom. If this had been a pay product I would have gone 4 stars for the ease of read thing. But as a free product its 4 stars all the way.

I'm really not sure how I got along these last 18+ years of gaming without this product. Best part is it will work with any system. Although I will say some of my story gamer friends will not like this product for the lack of confusing terms and no real explanation on how best to FUDGE the dice. OSR fans will love this product though. It pulls no punches and lets the die do all the work. Rolled a two...too bad, better luck next time.

BareBones Fantasy Role Playing Game

This is a great game. Lite yet still detailed. Its a streamline percentile (%) system That is classless and instead uses skills as class. It really has an old school sensibility to it while being innovative and quick to play. I thought I had enough fantasy games. I diffidently have room for this one.

Modern20 Is head and shoulders above anything else I've seen. Its like they took the d20 system and rebuilt it from the ground up. Too much for me to list all of it here. I did a deeper look on my blog.

Like every one else I have been waiting a long time to get my hands on the CKG. I could not get in on the pre-order.

I really struggled with the idea of paying $32 for the PDF. In the end my better judgment lost and I got it.

After reading through it I have got to say Its a great book. Part DMG part campaign planner.

For me the expanded rules for character building is great. As well as options for fine tuning the siege engine to taste is great too.

My only complaint is the price really. Too much for a PDF. If this was any other book. And any other company I would never have paid so much. $20 or even $25 I would have not hesitated.
