Arthur: King of Britain (Graphic Novel)
Publisher: Caliber Comics

I'm always on the lookout for the unique read, the good idea somebody finally published that isn't cookie cutter...so this was a treat. ARTHUR, KING OF BRITAIN was historic and mythical, interesting for its simpler views of the story before later embellishments. It was influenced by or clearly similar to Prince Valiant and Conan the Barbarian...drawn in b+w in a simply real looking but breezy style. I was initially hooked by the author's intent to represent the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth. The pages where the writer provides editorial/historical comment are equally nice. This was worth the price as a download, although FYI I saw the options included a hardcover book!

Son of Merlin #1

This book is potentially very good, it depends on how the story develops. The twists on Arthurian names and actual characters here are good, including Merlin, Morgan and Gwen. The best irony is how the son of a wizard became...a scientist! The artwork is very good, also very adult, Texiera-ish with more control. I'm a fan of mysticism and mystery, you name it. Dr. Strange, TV's Merlin, Heroic's the Black Enchantress, Lady Arcane, Marvel's Jennifer Kale, TV's Warehouse 13, Jim Butcher's work. I'll be paying attention to this one.

Champions Adventures #07

The Heroic comics vision is more creative than that of the "big 2" and riskier to boot. I've been a fan of Dennis Mallonee's work for two decades. Here they tell new "back stories" that stand up well as is. The artwork holds up well enough and the plot lines hook you. I particularly enjoy the tales of magic that spotlight Rose/Psyche for their awareness and groundedness, as this one is.

Retrowood: The Daisy Chain

I loved this period potboiler. Although it's clearly cut from a well worn and well known cloth, Mike Vosberg has proven himself as much a writer as artist. I've also recently seen his "celtic witch" work and I'm impressed by what independent publishing has done for his creativity and originality. The details in Retrowood are spot-on and the layers to the plot are perfect.
