The Void Core PDF
Publisher: WildFire
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/07/2014 06:07:49

Unimaginative, uninteresting, and lazily written. Do not buy. Decent art and good presentation fail to save this product, which otherwise feels like a rough draft by a Cthulhutech fan who read, and failed to understand, Eclipse Phase. Even the characters in the fiction seem to recognize that their world is trite and derivative. Problems with basic English and, seemingly, knowledge of the Solar System further degrade the book.

The Devil's Spine
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/15/2013 04:52:20

Great ideas, fun, flexible adventures, and professional presentation. The heavy use of recycled art in (at least) one section is an unfortunate and puzzling choice that lowers the tone of the book, and there are some typographical and grammar errors which are a little distracting, but the meat of the book is rich. I'd recommend this even if you're not running Numenera. The inspiration alone is worth the price.

Numenera

Clearly written, well-presented, imaginative and fun, with beautiful illustrations. Recommended. Even if you never run this game, it's worth the purchase simply for the ideas, and is also a pleasure to read.

The author seems to feel that we should be impressed with him and his history, but this only shows through in the introduction (and the name of the company) and can easily be ignored.

The use of illustrations created for other, unrelated material (in particular several of Keith Thompson's illustrations, created for his portfolio or perhaps other projects are re-used here) is questionable, and lowers the tone of the book somewhat. But again, this is minor, and made up for by the otherwise excellent work throughout.

The Monster Hunter International Employee Handbook and Roleplaying Game
Publisher: Hero Games
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/02/2013 00:00:00

Concise guide, mediocre book, poor artwork. Not recommended. While this serves as a concise guide to the events of the "Monster Hunter International" novels, the writing is flat and the book fails to convey a sense of atmosphere. The layout is competent, but combined with the writing style, it creates the feeling that one is reading a textbook or technical manual rather than an enthusiastic introduction to an exciting world. And the artwork, apart from a few pieces by Ben McSweeney, is amateurish at best, with poorly-edited photographs masquerading as illustrations or sloppily-colored, oddly-stylized work. It's hard to credit this as a product from a professional company. I do not recommend it--just read the novels and run a game with your own, favourite system.

Captures the feeling of earlier games and presents it well for a modern audience. Well-written, nicely laid out, and with artwork perfect for the tone. Highly recommended.

Warbirds Role Playing Game

A bit disappointing. The layout of the world feels derivative of "Swashbucklers of the Seven Skies", the writing feels flat, there are basic English errors, and the layout of the book is uninspired. Some of the ideas are interesting, and the combat system looks like a lot of fun. The price is right, too, so I'd recommend picking it up if you're interested. Just be prepared for the above.

Diaspora

This game is worth purchasing for the social combat system alone. I've never seen a system for resolving social situations that is this imaginative, clearly explained, and fun to play. This is to say nothing of the rest of the book, which would be well worth the price of purchase even without the innovative social combat system. Clear writing, an interesting setting that honors its roots in old-school science fiction gaming, wonderful mechanics for player participation in world creation, and good structure and layout make this an all-around excellent book, despite a few puzzling typos and art that some might view as out-of-place.

Buy this book. You'll like it.

Bare Bones Multiverse Core Rules
Publisher: Scaldcrow Games
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/02/2013 05:16:38

Important rules are missing, unnecessarily confusing terms are used, and some key words are switched or misused. Which is all too bad, because the system itself seems like it would be a lot of fun! The price is also far too high for such an amateurish product, with poor layout, bad typesetting, and what appears to be clip-art.

The Aegis Project
Publisher: John Wick Presents
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/21/2012 12:25:20

This game is full of great ideas for military and mecha games that I have wanted to see in print for some time. The rules seem to support the proper feel of play to go with these ideas. In particular, the three historical periods presented have differences in how some aspects of play are handled within them that would seem to give each a different flavor.

There are numerous typographical, grammatical, and other errors, however, which can get quite distracting and are not at all what one expects from a finished product presented by such a vaunted creator. This feels like a good, solid rough draft, and I would dearly love to see it get the polishing it deserves. In its current state, however, I must regrettably give "The Aegis Project" two stars.

Hilarious! I picked this up because of a podcast actual play session I heard, and I started laughing right from the first page. The writing sets the tone, and the book(let) is easy to read with rules clearly laid out. If you're looking for something fast and fun, I'd say this game is for you. Plus, the price is tough to beat.

Leopard Women of Venus (QAGS)
Publisher: Hex Games
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/16/2011 07:45:09

Well-laid out, easy to read, and fun, this book is written by people who understand and appreciate the bizarrely earnest worlds created by Fletcher Hanks. That alone is reason enough to pick it up. Connor and Burnett are your Virgils on a tour you won't want to miss if you've ever enjoyed pulp, superheroes, or surrealism.

The art is fun, the setting by turns unsettling and amusing. The section on how to run the game really makes this book, showing how to create an atmosphere not quite like any other game I've seen--you'll be tempted to think of it as a comedy game, but it's not, not really. The world and the game itself are well suited to QAGS, and if you like the system odds are you'll like the book. Grab it.

Weekend Warriors
Publisher: 12 to Midnight
by Victor J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/27/2007 09:50:24

This is a good purchase if you want to run a one-evening game that's not too serious. The provided characters work very well, proving useful both to forward the plot (which, like in any good bad horror movie, is not a plot so much as an excuse to put the characters in danger). The setting is well-detailed and set out in a realistic fashion. The maps are simple in style, but quite useful.

Players who are not careful can quickly find themselves in hot water in this adventure, which is written very well to make low-level encounters quite challenging. Players with infantry training will probably make short work of the module. Mine did, but we had a blast anyway.

The layout and design could stand some improvement. There are some typos, and the enlarged excepts scattered throughout don't always contribute to the overall mood and tend to clutter up the text. However, the links which open maps to relevant sections directly from the text are very, very handy, allowing the GM to run the game off a laptop, as I did, and help one get an overall picture of the setting while reading the area descriptions.

The adventure's shortcomings are understandable, and are made up for by its strengths; well-balanced encounters, a detailed setting, plenty of maps, and a fun atmosphere. My players and I had a great time, and I'd recommend the product.

A good springboard for creativity. This generator has helped me with quick missions for one-night games as well as giving me ideas for ongoing campaigns. For a buck twenty-five, I'd say it's worth it.
