I think this is the book that started the revolution. It's not the first occult roleplaying game or the first modern fantasy roleplaying game but it's the one that perfectly encapsulated the post-modern feel of current age roleplaying game. A must read.

I...love and hate this edition of Mage: The Asension. For years I would not, could not accept the Avatar Storm and the slap to the face of my prefered Mage playstyle. I think this was the straw that broke the camels back on my picking up every WW product they put out.

However that aside, some good things DID come out of this book:

  1. A revised technocrazy that honestly seemed interested in the betterment of mankind instead of a monolithic control mechnism.

  2. Nicely updated and revised paradox rules.

  3. Tighter options for what frankly is one of the best magic systems out there.

So, while I may hate the setting changes in the revised era of mage, I do appreicate the book for what remains.

Not bad, but I'm waiting for M20 with hope it is setting/timeline agnostic enough for my taste.

When this game was first released, a long time ago in a gaming life I had before I was married, it was just another storytelling game from White Wolf. Yes like all the other WW fans I bought it along with all of its expansions but I never really played or ran it.

I am so glad I've now picked up the game again. I'd never previously appreciated how elegant the magic rules are or how dramatic the game can be.

I cannot recommend this game enough and I can't believe I pretty much let it pass me by first time round - not this time though !

I bought this hoping for a functional product. I got (first three downloads) a product that didn't work at all in adobe reader. Then I downloaded it a fourth time and it worked, but the first seven pages were missing. There's some serious server-end problems here, a disturbing trend since I started buying the old world documents.

Excellent game! Perhaps the best magic/spellcasting system of any system I've played. Love it!

Excellent, logical and realistic game system. But only after you took the time the read every rule. Until then, the game is extremely hard to understand, even to read. It is not an option -- not even for a player -- to read only some rules and start playing.

The magic system is excellent and gives possibilites very few other game do -- however, the chapters about magic are the most complicated.

The book is extremely poorly cross-references, the table of contents is ridiculous. There are no bookmarks in the pdf.
