Variant items for dealing with specific undead monsters and their abilities. Contains good additions for a PC's arsenal in undead heavy campaigns, but little else beyond an expanded item list.

Some useful seeds of ideas for specialised ways to fight undead. It's a bit soulless for my taste and, for the magical versions particularly, I don't know how attractive the ability to suppress certain undead or devilish traits will be, considering the cost and inherent danger of using a splash weapon.

LIKED: Sun Water and particularly Water of Manifestation seem useful.

Adventurer Essentials: Holy Water is a short 7 page pdf product for the d20 system. This product is the first in Skortched Urf' Studios' new line of Adventurer Essentials products. Each product in the series aims to examine those essential items that adventurers frequently use or require during the course of any dungeon crawl or adventure. This first product looks at holy water, the bane against undead and evil outsiders.

The product comes as a single pdf file without any bookmarks. The latter though shouldn't be a problem considering the short length of the product. Only 5 pages of content are included, but there is a nice little cover for the product, and it contains some simple yet welcome interior art of the various containers typically containing the different types of holy water in the pdf. Writing and editing is good, although some introductory text on the pdf (not its content) would've been welcome. Overall, a pleasing presentation and a good start to this line of products.

This product is all about holy water. It starts by presenting a brief history of holy water, and its somewhat contrived discovery at the hands of an elven priest. Then it proceeds to dive into discussing the various ingredients of holy water, most notably water, silver and the blessing of a deity. I found this an interesting read, with some useful titbits that could make something considered to be just a weapon have a little more history and flavor to it. The descriptive text also gives enough information to have you thinking about variants of holy water beyond those presented in this product. The product, unfortunately, does not deal with, for example, unholy water for evil characters, or any particular tactics regarding the use of holy water, though in the latter case one would expect them to be rather self-explanatory.

Adventurer Essentials presents a number of new variant and magical holy waters that can be used by an adventuring party. There are some interesting and good ideas here, from holy water that can turn various creatures, to holy water that is particularly effective against certain undead creatures. Magical holy waters are all based on a similar formula, that of the holy water removing from a creature one of its special attacks or abilities for a limited duration. For example, the holy water of freedom prevents a ghoul's paralysis from affecting anybody. The other holy waters prevent similar abilities in undead and evil outsiders, those creatures normally affected by holy water. The product also contains a mundane item, the aspergillum, for sprinkling multiple doses of holy water, and several magical artifacts that can be used to create holy water by merely touching water.

This is a good little pdf. It provides some interesting and useful new material, and expands a little on a single item that most adventurers use at some point in their careers. Presentation and writing is good, and you get enough content to make the product worth its value. On the negative side, perhaps the product could've been more complete by including perhaps unholy water or tactics using holy water, or more pertinently creating a wider variety of magical items, rather than a bunch of items around the same formula. Overall, a solid product and good value for money.

LIKED: This product contains some interesting ideas, and it expands on holy water to give it a little more flavor. Some useful mundane and magical items, as well as variant holy waters. Solid presentation.

DISLIKED: A wider variety of different types of holy waters would've been interesting, as would perhaps some additional information to fill out the product a little more.

The latest thing in the PDF world is to take one item or spell and to delve as much into the analysis of it as you can, diagnosing every legend, nook and cranny. Adventure Essentials: Holy Water is the first in a series of books taking this concept to the world of the mundane adventuring items.

Holy Water is 7 pages long and focuses only on Mundane (though that is debatable) item of Holy Water. The book is well laid out with colorful art that would make excellent handouts. You find out quickly that seven pages dedicated to one item provides a lot of good generic fluff. The first three pages informs us of the history of holy water and then dissect the ingredients that make up holy water, settling the debate as to whether it is just a normal prayer or a bless spell. The next few pages lay out different variations of holy water, from mundane to magical.

Normally, I thoroughly enjoy material like this. By analyzing one item, you become a better player as it teaches you how to use your wits instead of your 5th level spell slot. However, instead of telling me about tactics for normal holy water, it begins to introduce variations of holy water, thus making me believe that normal holy water must not be essential enough. This detour from my expectation of the product was slightly disappointing. That is not to say that the variations are not good, they can be quite useful. But my hopes was that the product concentrated more on the original Holy Water.

For the Player
As said, there are some pretty nifty variations of Holy Water. The Water of Health is a cheap way to stop those pesky energy drains and water of solitude should be helpful against any creature whom is constantly summoning reinforcements.

For the Dungeon Master
If you are looking to tone down the magic in your campaign a tad, a few of the new magical variations of holy water can be substituted as treasures in your campaign. The Aspergillum is a mundane item that sprinkles holy water like the peppershaker at an Italian restaurant. The Mace of Heaven is a weapon form of the device.

If you do not want to add more items into your campaign, you could always apply the tweak that I did and say that performing the required spell for the special items even after it has already been turned into regular holy item still turns it into its enhanced version. By expanding the use of Holy Water to outsiders and demons, it increases its effectiveness.

The Iron Word
Whereas it does not offer any useful tactics for regular old Holy Water, it does provide some useful variations of the substance that, if kept mundane, can really add some non-magical alternative to your game. With a slight tweak, you could figure out a way to apply the tweaks to normal Holy Water.

LIKED: - the alternative holy waters are creative and not overpowered in the least. They are also inexpensive.
- the art is very nice for a $2 product. For that matter it beats some $8 and $10 products
- The history and creation of holy water is generic and effective.

DISLIKED: - There were no tactics provided for regular old holy water which was what i was expecting.

Adventurer Essentials: Holy Water is a short sourcebook from Skorched Urf? Studios. The zipped file is just over three-and-a-half megabytes in size, containing a single PDF file a little larger. The PDF is seven pages long, including a page for the cover, and one for the OGL. No table of contents or bookmarks are given, but none are really needed anyway.

The book contains a fair amount of artwork. In addition to the full-color cover, most of the new magic and mundane items have an adjoining full-color illustration. This might make the lack of a printer-friendly version into a mild issue for some people.

The book opens with a recounting for what may have been the very first (and accidental) creation of holy water, before giving a very interesting in-game explanation for why holy water is created the way it is, explaining the significance of the water, silver shavings, and positive energy that are its component parts. It then gives descriptions of variant holy waters, both non-magical (just by changing some component of the creation process) and magical (where you need an item creation feat to create them). All of these are basically holy water that works in a different way, such as by temporarily negating the paralysis ability of an undead creature splashed by it, or by stripping a fiend of its ability to summon its fellows for a short while.

The book closes out by presenting three related items. The first is an aspergillum, which is essentially a mace with holes in the head, in which holy water can be stored. The second one is a magic aspergillum, which creates holy water on command a few times a day. The last one is a minor artifact that transmutes large quantities of normal water into holy water. Oddly, despite being a minor artifact, magic item creation guidelines are given (GMs would be wise to ignore these, unless they want their players making lakes of holy water)!

All in all, the book does a very good job of presenting both interesting explanations for holy water, and in giving interesting variants (beyond the simple paradigm of unholy water, lawful water, or chaotic water). While the magical variants of holy water are magic items in their own right, even low-level PCs should have no problems making and using them. Adventurer Essentials lives up to its name in its presentation of Holy Water.

LIKED: The new variants of holy water are very innovative, as well as useful. Also, the in-game explanations for why holy water works are a delightful bit of verisimilitude for a campaign.

DISLIKED: The minor artifact at the end of the book shouldn't have standard magic item creation information. It's too powerful for that.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied

Adventurer Essentials: Holy Water by Skortched Urf? Studies is part of a series which explores common adventuring items and expands the options available. It is a small product only seven pages (five pages after cover and OGL) with a clean and simple layout and a limited amount of equally clean B&W art.

Unsurprisingly, it is all about holy water. It begins with a good, fantasy history of holy water for a fantasy world. Did you know an elf invented holy water? Well, now you do. A nice bit of story to explain the D&D version of holy water. The work goes further and explores why holy water works, again within the D&D cosmology, which is very well done.

Next, we have variations on the theme of holy water, broken into two types: Mundane holy water, which uses the same basic idea as holy water but change the effect slightly (Sun Water and Turning Water are the types presented) and are not magical as such. And magical holy waters, which are more potent having been magically enhanced by divine power, six of these are provided and each counters a specific ability of the undead or evil outsiders. Very nicely thought out and executed.

The product concludes with a mundane item, the aspergillium or holy water sprinkler, and two magic items: The Mace of the Heavens, a magical weapon-grade aspergillium, and a set of four holy symbols that create holy water and can be combined into a minor artifact.

A tightly focused but useful resource for any campaign that uses holy water, and will use more if you incorporate these items into your game.

QUALITY: Very Good
