One Crowded Hour
Publisher: Mongoose
by Daryl D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/18/2009 16:02:18

The good:It is simple, direct, and classic. A wonderful example of Traveller at its best--the cold equations in action! I have not run it yet, and it is tricky to work into a campaign if the PCs have a ship, but it is a grand way to insert a disaster for the PCs to experience--without taking out their starship!

The bad: about half the NPCs fall into the cliche/niche category. There is a reason for this(I assume), to make the PCs stand out the more as either good, bad, or in-between guys. That may be off-putting to some, though. Also, this adventure does not work well for too non-canon universes, or extreme locales, without a lot of modification. Also, no graphics, guys--this could be considered good or bad, depending on how far off your universe is from Traveller norms.

BUT as a dramatic, taut little pot-boiler game, it is a doozy!

V. Good! Some typos, but they corrected them rapidly (before I spotted 'em all!) Love that it is of a reasonably smooth surfaced design, and is adaptable to Non-Traveller games.

DRIFT: The Inferior Planets
Publisher: Alternate Realities Publications
by Daryl D. [Verified Purchaser]

An amazing idea, pretty well executed; liked the idea of PCs flying around in old-school hardware doing what they do. Also, the locations are (reasonably) accurate (w/ the noted, purposeful exception of the Vulcanoids) and pretty playable. Disadvantages are as follows: you'd better have a good idea of the nature of the actually useful older craft in the space program, for realism's sake; a Mercury was not a useful spacecraft for anything but test flights by any means. Also, they kind of wimped out on us, giving us the least-traffic region in the Solar system to deal with; what with Mercury a mine/prison and Venus a terraforming location; Mars or Ceres would have been a LOT more interesting and useful for an independent bunch of PCs.

Last, the downloads were sectioned rather oddly (TOC, Text Glossary, and Text) for useful reference. why?

Incredibly cool and useful--spans the whole range of adventures, from civilized intrigue to merc tickets to space adventure! My favorite is...oops, don't wanna give it away...but these can fit into and expand a wide range of campaigns. Also, they can work really well, with modifications, into non-Traveller space campaigns (heh, heh)

Good: I REALLY like this design; sensible, tight, can fit in both old-school and New-Era Traveller, adaptable, gunned and good for a small group (4 or less) PC's to fly and trade in! Campaign suggestions are EXCELLENT!!

Bad: Subtle--at this point, you have NO reason to buy a vanilla Free Trader as a PC--here you get a ship with guns, for not that much more...and frankly, I like this design better...

I was loving all of your maps a lot--until this one. It is the BOMB! even better, it provides a wonderful "homeport" for my campaign, and hooks up delightfully with a SF supplement that provides information about 'Locations in Space' (if I may slip in a plug!) the detailing is wonderful, and I can easily, with its smaller size, strain out the 'B-5'-ness (although I LIKE B-5 also!}

LIKED: The fragile relation between the people running the station; the detail level, which provides just enough wiggle-room and blank space to insert your own additions!

DISLIKED: Balanced on a knife-edge between B5 and DS 9....

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Overall, I found this product to be not too bad; I especially liked the casket-encounter. However, it is overall rather cliched; my starship crew didn't react generally the way the contacts were expecting.

LIKED: good story starter

DISLIKED: too specific; too old-school with not enough twists for a savvy/experienced role-playing crew.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Very good; detailed and v. Just the ship to have guarding the pirate haven! Gotta wonder, who designs these, though? No streamlining or aerodynamic surfaces, modular pieces, etc? seems like you are going to specify some shipyard, somewhere down the pike...would be nice....

LIKED: The particulars about why a pocket frigate might be encountered in this situation. I find this wonderful...not perfect, but wonderful. My original copy is disintegrating, so replacing it is great! I note that you scanned it word-for-word, including the useless bad page. That was wasted data, that you could've replaced with an errata from GDW's old house magazine, Challenge. Other than that, its great!

LIKED: the system that allows you to design YOUR OWN universe--there are only 3 rules sets that allow for that.

DISLIKED: That it got scanned in, warts and all, with bad pages, and correction pages right after, and not just the correction pages!

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
V. Good, but not quite up to the incredibly high level of Osiris-9; I still like it, but am not sure of the logic of straight-in runways in a contra-gravity equipped universe.
