There are some things to like about this product, but overall it's left me somewhat disappointed. Really not much of an adventure, and more of a mini-sourcebook. The layout is somewhat bad (I'm not a fan of the red borders), though the art is passable. With the exception of one character (Dead Blue Fish... hard not to like that name), the NPCs seem somewhat uninspired. For 17 pages, it feels just a touch overpriced... Though only a touch.

However, the worst offence, and the deal-breaker for me, was the fact that the PDF disallows cutting & pasting, which is a must for any PDF I buy. If you feel like I do, best stay away from this product. If that doesn't bother you, it might be worth picking up, particularly if it's on sale.

LIKED: Some kernals of ideas, the overview of Dien Bien Phu, and Dead Blue Fish.

DISLIKED: The layout, most of the NPCs, the lack of cutting & pasting, and the fact that it's described as an adventure when it isn't, really.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
While I agree this isn't the sort of adventure that says "do this now. Okay, now that you've done that, do THIS now," saying it isn't an adventure is not fair to the product. It isn't designed to lead the characters by the nose and force them to travel through points A, B and C. It does, however, present a story to participate in. It includes methods to introduce characters in events and leads to a climax. It is designed to fit into an existing campaign so it is definately more open and fluid than a typical d20 fantasy adventure.

The Paint is the name of one of the best and most successful arena on the super powered gladiator circuit. This supplement shows such an organization can be used in an M&M campaign. The Paint is run by Erik the Red, a pseudo-cyborg with a mastery of technology, who knows what sells, and what sells is superpowered combat, often to the death. The Paint provides that. It gets its name from the nano-tech tattoos it imbeds in it fighters. One a fighter is painted; he (or she) belongs to the Paint for twenty-five fights or death, whichever comes first. Very few fighters survive their contract, but Erik does not care as long as the fights are exciting and the money keeps rolling in. The book includes information on the way that the Paint is structured, including this years ?circuit? of events. Several scenario ideas are provided along with four fully described characters and seven other gladiators are given just backgrounds (and art, which is very helpful in defining a ?comic book? character). The location of the Paint for this year?s Circuit is Dien Bin Phu in Vietnam, the site of a great French defeat in 1956. This choice pleases my historian?s heart. The idea of a superpowered arena may be too dark for some campaigns and it is very much locked into a current or near future setting and would take considerable work to adjust to an earlier period. But for those who like the idea of dark underworld of superpowered conflict, this is an excellent starting point.

This is the first non-mechanics superlink product that really struck home for me. The Paint is a fun read and looks like it would serve great as either a one short or as a basis for an entire campaign. Finally, someone has taken a break from simualting the lame four color genre and given us something with a little more teeth. This supplement is a mix of Fight Club, Bloodsport, and superheroes. Well Done.

LIKED: A different attitude than most superlink products.

DISLIKED: I could have used more! I might have griped about the price, but The Paint hit the spot and thats more important.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Very Satisfied
