Wraith the Oblivion (2nd Edition)

White Wolf’s biggest artistic and critical success, but also a commercial flop. The central (death) concept is very taken with thematic Jungian ideas such as archetypes, complexes and individuation, whilst being very easy to play out ghost stories where the ghosts play the antagonists (such as in The Others or The Sixth Sense).

The rules are largely the same as with previous WoD games, but the central mechanic revolves around the conflict between the persona of the PCs and their (dark side) Shadows, normally played out by other players. The impact of this is to provide a cathartic aspect to the game, which was a very original idea which influenced other games thereafter.

There is some sloppiness in editing (unbelievably Willpower is overlooked for a trait description in both first and second editions), but the interior layout, grayscale art and design are very easy on the eye. The general depth of the setting material and quality of writing are still the main reasons to buy this book. Timeless.

Note: This is a review of the hardcover Print on Demand product and not the game.

The PoD book is a printed version of the currently available PDF. While the text and art is fuzzy in places, it is legible and more than useable for games. The binding is more than sufficient although the cover image looks a little drab (due to the printing and not the original image). The paperstock used is fair but some care will need to be taken when handling the book as it has a tendency to pick up stains rather easily. The ever-present white boarder around the interior pages is annoying and does make the product look a little “cheap”.

Unfortunately, given the age of the original files, this is likely to be the best available to fans of the game. Yes, copies of the original book are still available and some can be found in very good condition, useally the prices demanded are rather high. An anniversary edition is due to be relased sometime in the next 12 months.

While the game is great, and this finally allowed me to buy the game, I really wanted to have from the CWoD. The pdf is not great, it's scanned terribly, the pages are blurry and some text(mainly the stories) are hard to read properly. Would have rated higher if the pdf was of decent quality.

The book is fantastic. It's the only core cWoD game I never bought as I could never find a physical copy back in the day! However, the quality of the scan is poor. The pages are crooked and blurry. Quite disappointing.

White Wolf Publishing's greatest artistic success...and biggest comercial failure. It doesn't matter what you've heard; this game is NOT about death. It's about life, and appreciating what you had while alive. Is your character dead? Yes. But in Wraith, at least, death grants a remarkable clarity on life. Phenomenal game.
