You like the novels of Alexandre Dumas? You liked the old musketeer movies or the recent 'Pirates of the Caribbean'? Welcome to 7th Sea. Thea is basically a distant cousin of Europe during the age of the renaissance, spiced up with legends and myths that became reallity. This is one of the best (if not THE best) roleplaying games that was ever published. Instead of beating the dead horse and featuring elves, dwarfs and trolls this game offers something completely new.
The Player's Guide covers the very basics that players and game master have to know to start playing the game. Character creation, rules on combat and magic, some of the better known legends of Thea - it's all in here. And as the beginning player you really won't need much more. The rules are made to fit into the swashbuckling genre and easy to learn (alternatively, there is a D20 version of the game called Swashbuckling adventures). The setting is rather low-magic but the supernatural is clearly there. But as mentioned before it stems from legends and folklore and it is certainly not what you will find in the usual high fantasy-setting. If you like a mature setting offering a nice mix of 17th century renaissance and "superstition come true," then get this game. If your first thought when trying out a new game is, "Can I play a drow?" then you better stay away from this one.

What can I say? One of the best roleplaying games of the last years - no doubt about it. If you like the idea of a renaissance setting spiced up with mystical elements then get this book. The Game Master's guide covers, as expected, rules that are needed by the Game Master only (the basic rules are covered in the 7th Sea Player's Guide). But moreover this book gives you an insight into some of the nasty little secrets that you'll find in the world of Thea. The ideas are mindblowing to say the least. It is obvious that the creators invested alot of heartblood into this book (and every other 7th Sea supplement really). The book starts out with a description of the different nations of Thea and will give you a few details about regions, major cities and prominent npcs. You'll find rules for mass combat and naval battles in here, as well as tips how to run a succesful 7th sea game (and I mean really useful tips - not the usual self-evident crap that you will find in so many other games).
