Fortress (D20 Modern)

Fortress is a 26-page PDF from LPJ design, for Modern d20 gaming. As the title suggests, it covers fortresses, and does so in generous detail.

The PDF has no table of contents, nor bookmarks, which is a strike against it. Likewise, a printer-friendly version is absent. This could be problematic for printing, not just due to the color cover, but also because each page has color camouflage borders at the top and bottom of each page. The product has no interior artwork.

The book is divided up into four chapters. The first chapter covers designing and building a fortress. This short chapter mostly covers the setup process, and includes rules on purchasing the proper location, as well as discussing mapping the place out and actually having it constructed.

Chapter two is the longest of the book?s chapters. It breaks down the various materials you can use to build a fortress, as well as items you can use to further fortify and protect your fortress once it?s constructed. This section covers long lists of items, from materials for walls, to types of locks, and much more. Even things like gun turrets, or hiring a staff, is covered. All of these have individual descriptions, as well as mechanical information on various tables. The material here is easily equal to anything in the d20 Modern book.

Chapter three covers what it means to have a fortress in the campaign. Sub-headers introduce various topics, each of which then devotes several paragraphs to expounding on that topic with both advice and mechanics. Topics include factoring the costs of keeping your fortress running, how to lay siege to a fortress, occupying a captured fortress, destroying a fortress, and more.

Chapter four, the final chapter, presents several pre-made fortresses for your campaign. Five fortresses are presented here, ranging from the apartment of a local arms dealer, to the corporate tower of an international multi-billion dollar corporation. Each location has a brief introduction, a breakdown of how to get it, its defenses, and room descriptions. None, however, feature a map, which might be inconvenient.

Altogether, Fortress is a bastion in and of itself, a bastion of great information for your Modern d20 game. The book offers not only a wealth of new material that is absolutely vital for constructing a fortress, but also offers great advice on all of the related issues to consider. The book could have had its technical aspects improvd on (table of contents, printer-friendly version, maps), but these are relatively minor problems. Any Modern d20 game that involves raiding or defending a location should definitely take advantage of what this book has to offer.

LIKED: The lists of materials and accessories for fortresses was superb. It didn't end there either, with coverage on obtaining the proper location and permits, as well as discussing the related issues that having or raiding a fortress entails.

DISLIKED: The product fell down a bit on its technical presentations. No maps for the sample fortresses hurt. With the camo-colored borders, a printer-friendly version would have helped. Also, there is no table of contents or bookmarks.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
