Sexcraft: A Little Game with a Lot of Sex
Publisher: John Wick Presents
by Eoin B. [Verified Purchaser]

Normally sex in RPGs is pretty salacious and remarkably cheesy. Here, the focus of the game mechanics hinges on the fact that there is a relationship between the magician and the target of the spells - a wonderfully good addition. A more legalistic GM might want things to be more defined and less ad hoc than what's presented here. It's not an expansion for less mature groups. It calls for better social rules than are in most d20 games (IMNSHO). The art is tasteful, but kind of ... well, not for everyone. It's a good supplement... but not a great one.

Strands of Fate (1st Edition)

It's a solid, simple implementation of FATE... but it lacks some of the elements that I really found critical in having FATE as FATE. Not entirely my cup of tea, but well written and clearly presented,

The Book of Unremitting Horror (GUMSHOE version)

A great resource for improving your game. Any genre of game.

How? By deconstructing the tropes of slasher and j-horror movie monsters, we get to see what makes the monsters work as characters. As such, they become more Real when played. Mystery Man makes for a very memorable yet enigmatic emissary of an alien culture or Man In Black, for example. The frame fiction also is inspirational for ideas on how to build a story hook for your characters (not necessarily directly as shown) - the idea of cameraphone video of "real" deaths being used as a staged music video worked wonderfully for getting my characters involved with a story that really put the characters out of their comfort zone... and thus made for an excellent horror game.

Solipsist

I'm a fan of diceless games for practical reasons: I do much of my gaming these days on a commuter train. The choice of diceless play in Solipsist is more of an artistic one - it's a bit too light for some of my group who like more crunch and grind to their play style. Fair enough, yet the simplicity of the characters and the resolution system work very well for me. I especially enjoy the idea of overshooting a target number being about as bad (but in a different way) as undershooting it.

The artwork is entertaining, but how bidding works could have used a graphic explanation as well. Nothing major would be needed, but would be useful.

All in all, a great little game with some big ideas. An excellent value!

Kids, Castles & Caves Bonus Set
Publisher: Arion Games

This is a really nicely rendered set of paper minis. I like using paper minis in situations that are prone to things falling apart - such as playing with kids.

I thought that the way that the files were broken up was confusing - Instructions are in a separate file from the illustrations which is separate from the minis yadda yadda yadda... Not a big fan, but I can see it working on the level of "download only what you want." I'd have preferred a single file, though.

I was able to put this together with the other parts of the bundle into a binder with a dice pouch and some "power cards" on a card organizer sheet and get it together for my 4 year old's b'day. We've tried the basic mechanic and she was easily able to get it. Very, very cool - we now have an alternative to the games that are "younger" and "older" than her...
