Dawn of the Artifacts: Dusk is a Shadowrun 4th edition (SR4) adventure that is relatively brief compared to other "adventure" books for Shadowrun like Ghost Cartels and Emergence, but it makes up for its short length with its large amount of detail. You will receive maps, stat blocks, NPC overviews, and the traditional "Legwork" tables present in Shadowrun adventures from previous editions.

This is a good adventure for a starting Gamemaster who has run a few sessions and would like to run something a little different from the usual starter adventures without diving into a complicated story arc as presented in other SR4 adventure books. The adventure has good pacing and is likely to bring the Shadowrunners out of their element, forcing them to come up with solutions to problems that they do not usually face in Seattle or other typical runner havens. It can be inserted into almost any Shadowrun campaign, as the runners will be flying to a new city for a one-time job into a dangerous African city.

As a veteran Shadowrun player of over 20 years through all four editions, I appreciated the nostalgia that seeps through this adventure. The key non-player characters in this adventure are a nod to the lore of past adventures, without boosting the power level of the campaign to an unmanageable level. There are no immortal elves or dragons here, although you may run into some cameos from some heavy hitters of the past. You will meet Jane "Frosty" Foster, a prime runner who has a storied history with the Shadowrun universe and literature, and she ties the story back to some classic Shadowrun literature like Harlequin and Dunkelzahn's Will. The nostalgia is not ponderous enough to weigh down the adventure, however, and the adventure can be run without any prior knowledge of previous Shadowrun events.

The SR4 setting book Feral Cities is a good companion book for this adventure, as it provides a more detailed overview of the city of Lagos. Conversely, if you intend to run a whole SR4 campaign in Lagos, then this adventure will be helpful with its maps of Lagos areas, player handouts, NPC statistics (ever want to know what a typical Igbo ganger looks like?), and other crunchy bits. Feral Cities is also helpful for the next adventure in the story arc, Dawn of the Artifacts: Midnight, as it provides details for the next city the Shadowrunners will visit. Hint: Bring some bug spray!

I can highly recommend this adventure if you are looking for something relatively simple to run that gives you every detail you need to know, rather than a general overview and no crunchy stats. As a standalone, it can provide a good change of pace for the runner team, and it provides hooks for the next adventure in the Dawn of the Artifacts story arc. It is also a great adventure to introduce the city of Lagos, if you intend to run any adventures there. However, if you are not running in the city of Lagos, then most of this adventure will be shelved after you play it. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but do not expect the year-long story arc of products like Ghost Cartels and Emergence.
