Very easy-to-use map maker, though it's more for sci-fi and modern maps than fantasy ones (as the title states). Of course, most map makers focus on fantasy, so it's good to have one that does something else (particularly with cyberpunk games becoming more popular thanks to the hype surrounding CP 2077). Besides the ease of use, what I like about Shuffler is that it's very no-frills and doesn't fuss about with too many things — which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, map sizes are limited. You won't be able to create a sci-fi megadungeon with this (not without a few workarounds). The limit for a single map is 10"x7"; you can join maps together (up to 4 segments) using the program, making the limit 20"x14", but that's the extent of it (again, unless you use workarounds like Photoshop to manually join more map segments). On the other hand, this also means the program is really straightforward and focused. It comes with quite a few tiles that you can use (though lacking in furniture, which you can purchase as addons or import using the paid plugin), and it's just a matter of dragging and dropping.

One thing that bugs me is that the hotkeys are tricky to use, and the program does glitch out at times with objects that refuse to be deleted or resized properly. It's thus important to save regularly. The interface is also extremely obtuse, and trial-and-error is not an option here since it lacks tooltips and info bars. You'll really have to go through the guides (in the program and the accompanying PDF) while experimenting with the hotkeys and buttons to properly understand what they do. Once you overcome this hurdle, however, you'll be able to start creating maps in under 10 minutes.

All that being said, I greatly enjoy the convenience that the program brings to the table, and with the lack of sci-fi maps out there (besides those from regular creators like Heroic Maps, Loke's Battlemats and Paths to Adventure), this program is a godsend. For that, it gets 4.5/5.

This an excellent sc fi/modern map maker. The interface appears daunting until you get stuck in. Then it all falls in to place quite quickly.

Support for the program is excellent. Claudio is a very amiable and helpful chap.

Be aware that if you see a catalogue number on the end of the program files they need to be removed or the program will only half work. Claudio is aware of this but the catalogue number is added by Drive thru. If they don't remove the numbers you must!!

Also, when loading a new map be sure to clear the screen first. If you don't it can get buggy due to old layers still present under the new map. Remember this rule and everything is fine.

Highly recommended.

I would love to see more content.

The artwork and basic idea behind this is excellent. I made some really good maps with it and the print-quality is very good: at 300dpi it's not exactly photo quality, but is very good all the same.

For small/basic maps the editor works well, but there are a few bugs and the interface can be a little unresponsive if you make a large map with lots of wall/door sections.

I had issues with large maps - everything looks fine when saved, but when a large map is reloaded, some of the squares are in the wrong places, and wall sections are either in the wrong place or missing.

I liked using Shuffler and I'd consider it again for small interlocking space board sections, but for large, complex maps, it's just too unreliable - and the inability to reload some maps after saving makes it 4/5 instead of five.

Shuffler is really good stuff. If you need to crank out maps for a game, this is the product for you. It is set to print to 8.5x11 paper with 1 inch squares, so there is no guessing if the image will print on your printer. The elements can be sized to scale from 10 mm up 28mm+. Drag and drop the elements, print, and viola-instant adventure map. Not only is the product really awesome, the customer CANNOT BE BEAT. I discovered an bug in the Save to PNG function and emailed the developer. He wrote me back in a couple of hours, and had a fix for me to test within 12 hours of my first email! How cool is that? This is the Gold Standard for customer service. If you ever need to make maps for your adventures, this is the software. Buy it. For less than $16 it is an incredible bargain! Buy it now!

Did I mention you should buy this software?

This Flash-based program is an easy-to-learn application that permits the creation of a wide variety of maps for RPG and wargame use. The basic tile artwork is executed very well, but the maps truly come alive when adding some of the many available effects for lighting, dirt, spills, water and others, all with color and/or shading variations available with just a keystroke or two. Every tile element is also scalable, allowing for adjustments in element and shapesizes and dimensions for the ultimate in map customization.

Square and hexagon overlays are incorporated as options, making this a useful application for both wargame and RPG maps with modern or sci-fi themes. Saving your maps as graphic (PNG) images with Shuffler also permits scaling of final map images for larger or smaller than the standard 1" square grid areas used for most RPG area maps.

The included documentation teaches how to add and manipulate images to your maps through the use of graphics instead of lengthy blocks of text. This permits the user to focus on creating useful and detailed maps easily after just a short amount of time using the program.

Whether you are a GM looking to create maps for your own campaigns or a game designer/publisher looking to easily create professional quality maps (obtaining a commercial license was easily and rapidly accomplished), Shuffler is simply THE application to own for completing your game maps in a short amount of time with the best possible visual results.

I am quite impressed with the ease of use. objects can be manipulated simply with the on screen prompts and the printed results are excellent for the games i am currently involved with. (all things zombie, star wars) I would gladly recomend this product to referees who have little time to prepare maps for games as they are so quick to produce.

By printing some of the debris items on seperate sheets they can be placed wherever they are needed, loaded into vehicles etc.

A great piece of software that can run in different platforms, this allows you to build tiles for indoors and outdoors modern/sci-fi games. The interface takes some time getting used to, especially the keyboard commands for the different operations available on each tile. As it also exports the map images, it's possible to combine it with your favorite virtual tabletop software.

Shuffler - beyond .pdf indeed.

I love miniatures maps. I have hundreds of .pdfs, but for each new game, I always seem to need a bespoke map. Creation using Inkscape has proved time-consuming (you have to create each object yourself) and the printout-scaling is always tricky. I have some commercial maps that are are layered .pdfs, allowing you to switch elements on and off, but what if you want that generator in the far corner of the room?

Now imagine a mapping program that consists of palettes of common floors, walls and objects that can be dragged onto a map-grid and snap into place (no alignment worries here!). Each element can be rotated, re-sized, distorted or deliberately mis-aligned if you like. Some can be re-coloured or have special behaviours (beds can be occupied or empty, floor tiles can be skewed to reveal a different floor-type underneath). Text can be added to any surface. You can easily create lighting effects, fog, or the distorting effect of looking through a liquid. Each plant and blood splatter is unique. Imagine being able to choose the appropriate miniature scale for your game with a simple slider and then printing onto either A4 or Letter 8.5" by 10", across several pages if necessary, or output to a png for use online or sharing by email.

Shuffler is that program. It is in constant development, with free updates forever and new sets of objects being added to DriveThruRPG all the time (you can even invest in a plug-in that allows you to create your own for a few quid extra - highly recommended). There is a comprehensive, language independent manual, but should you run into trouble, the designer is active on the forums, eager and responsive to feedback and generous in his support. Finally there is a growing community of enthusiasts sharing their work.

The basic elements included are real eye-candy and you can produce a bespoke, professional-looking map in minutes. If you've ever bought a map-tile set for your miniatures, you'd love this program. Furthermore, some of the "Maps" being produced are actually card-model nets, so if you're going 3D with your paper, Shuffler is on the cutting edge of that too.

Overall and awesome product for such a modest investment.

Shuffler is really a great little program. I've tried a few others that are similar and really like Shuffler the best. It's easy to use and fairly intuitive so you can get a good looking map in no time. Plus, it's one of the only ones I've found that is dedicated to modern and Sci-Fi themes. Most other mapping tools seem to be geared to the fantasy realm.

Print out your maps on glossy photo paper and then glue your them to black foam core for really great, durable, and impressive tiles. The pre-generated maps are great too since most of the heavy lifting is done for you and you can just edit it quickly.

Great!
