Sidetrek Adventure Weekly #01: Blood on the Waterfront (PFRPG)
Publisher: LPJ Design
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/24/2008 01:53:42

I bought this publication because it offered four things I really like: Sidetreks, adventures, pirates and ninjas. Given the $3 price tag, what could I really expect?

Well...I got pirates and ninjas...but I wanted something more. For instance, I wanted a useable scenario that could be plopped into a campaign. I didn't get that.

I wanted a useable map that could easily be incorporated into my game. I didn't get that...I got a map that does not print out well and was not really useable. (Hint: See Oone Games for their Blueprints! That is how it is supposed to be done!)

Nothing about the Sidetrek Adventures could be termed a "sidetrek." What they are is a serial release of yet another large-scale adventure strand...with a much overall higher price tag than just buying the whole thing at once. The "sidetreks" add up to a linked campaign in a highly specific and quirky game world that is anything but "side."

I'm actually not knocking the product....Sidetrek Adventure Weekly #1 delivers what it promises. It just isn't something that I can really use.

What I expect to get in a set-piece side encounter is a LOCATION. (Monster stats are cool, but anyone can get that anywhere...who cares?) So, for instance, give me a map of a building, tower, temple, house...whatever...just so long as the map is much better than what I could have drawn in 10 minutes before the guys show up. Give me some value for my money...time saved...campaign enhanced...something.

Give me the map in a black and white or blueprint form so I can actually print it out and use it. Give me both players maps and a GM map...anything but a color map that is already marked with all the secret locations and cues.

I like the general direction Louis Porter Jr. Design is taking. I just wish this series was less text and more map.

0one's Blueprints: The Galley
Publisher: 0one Games
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser]

Excellent work! I am rating this newest entry into the Blueprint series at five stars because it is a nice example of a game company giving us exactly what we asked for.

This galley blueprint could be used in so many ways in any type of game. I can already see it as a slave ship or as the center piece for a Pirates of the Inner Sea scenario.

I am very impressed with 0one for responding to customer requests and getting useable products out onto the market quickly.

The entire Blueprints line represents one of the best values in gaming. The series is probably the best example of how pdf technology can make a game master's job easier and add quality to a campaign.

Keep up the good work 0one. Give us even more ship types and classes. We'll buy them up as quickly as you can post them!

0one's Blueprints: Pirate Ship
Publisher: 0one Games
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/10/2008 23:08:31

It is hard to find a better product than "Pirate Ship."

This is a really good deck plan and drawing of a mid-sized ship. It can be used as a pirate ship, a merchant hulk or a number of other types of vessel.

Good ship maps are so hard to find that this product is an absolute steal at $1.95.

The flexibility of the map features...such as the ability to add or remove grid lines, furniture and the like...makes this ship really useful.

Thank GOD this map is not in color! You have the choice of highly useful black lines or classic module blue. If this ship were in color it would be impossible to photocopy and an absolute mess as a game aid. It would drain your color cartridge for a map that really doesn't need color.

"Pirate Ship" is easily 0one's best product and I would recommend it to any serious game master. We need more ship diagrams like this one. Way to go, 0one!

0one's Blueprints: The Ruined Town, Dungeon of the 13 Undead
Publisher: 0one Games
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/07/2008 16:08:48

I love the 0one "Blueprints" line. I just don't like this one.

"Dungeon of the Thirteen Undead" has only one useful map. This is an outdoor map depicting a hillside and a ruined building. The rest are maps of dungeons that any game master could create in a few moments. Even at the cheap price of $1.95, there is not enough content here.

In general, 0one's "Blueprints" are of high quality. They are flexible and easily outstrip the overblown color maps that clutter up the pdf market. Blueprint maps look good when photocopied (which color maps do NOT). Also, they don't burn out your color printer cartridge.

Part of my dissatisfaction with this product is that 0one is releasing the "Ruined Town" project in dribs and drabs that are intended to suck cash out of gamer pockets. I don't blame 0one for making money, but they need to give us more value for each installment. The entire project will be a really expensive game product, when all the components are added up.

What we need is maps of interesting and useful buildngs. We also really really need deck plans for ships. More ships! More ships! (Have I remembered to mention the need for blueprints of ships?)

I don't hate this product, but 0one could do better.

NORTHERN CROWN: The Caves of Chisca
Publisher: Adamant Entertainment
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/13/2007 15:57:32

I was very impressed by this product. It is the first Atlas product I had ever read and it was my first introduction to the intriguing Northern Crown setting.

This product made me want to go out and find more from the Northern Crown project.

A well-written adventure with many elements. The Caves of Chisca might be a challenge to groups of D&D players who are more used to solving mysteries by simply killing everything in sight.

Caves of Chisca would be a nice add-on to someone running a Rennaisance or later D20 campaign.

How can you beat the price of FREE?

This product is totally worth your time.

Fantasy Ships of the High Seas
Publisher: Avalon Game Company
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser]

Do NOT purchase this completely worthless product!

Fantasy Ships of the High Seas and Fantasy Ships II: Coastal Raiders are two of the worst gaming products I have ever seen. I would rate them as only a waste of my time even if they had been FREE!

Instead of buying this joke for $4.95, why don't you check out 0one's Blueprints "Pirate Ship," for only $1.95.

I am having trouble thinking of anything nice to say about ComStar. I bought this product and Fantasy Ships II: Coastal Raiders at the same time. That was an incredibly STUPID thing to do! If I had seen what a horrible turd I was buying I would never have touched another ComStar product.

The nicest thing I can say about the "deck plans" included in this pdf is that they are ludicrously childish. Any gamer could do just as well in five minutes of sloppy work. There is nothing useful here...nothing.

I didn't know how important it is to read reviews before making a purchase...and I had more faith in RPGNow than I should have. I cannot believe they allowed this insult to gamers to be listed on their website.

I am so angry over the quality of these two publications that I will never buy anything from ComStar again, and shame on RPGNow for allowing this crap on their site!

Fantasy Ships II - Coastal Raiders

Oh my God! I am shocked at the childish turd I just purchased! I was stupid and bought both this item and Fantasy Ships of the High Seas at the same time. I would never have purchased a second ComStar product if I had looked at one first.

I bought this publication because it advertised ship diagrams. The "deck plans" mentioned are ludicrously childish hand drawings that any gamer could produce in five minutes of sloppy work. They do not even bark at the quality of an 0one Blueprints product like "Pirate Ship," which costs only$1.95! The diagrams are worthless to a gamer and an insult to any purchaser.

Do not get conned into buying this horrible load of worthless crap...and I say that because it is the nicest comment I can think of.

I had to give this product a one star rating because it is not possible to give it a zero. Shame on you, ComStar games, and shame on you RPGNow for even listing it.
