Excellent collection of "dark" art that can be used with any project (subject to attached license). 15 pages, 13 images. My issue with this is that pages are PDF and that makes them a little harder to work with. TIFF or PSD files would have been better.

I love this artwork.

The preview shows all artwork and if you've seen any other of Skortched Urf's Stockart (or any of LPJ's stockart), you have seen the license.

The images are exactly as they appear in the preview and appear to be in a good resolution (I haven't checked out the resolution yet to be sure, but they do look good).

My only complain (and it is only 1 complaint) is that the images are in PDF instead of in JPG, TIFF or some other image format. But that's not a huge complaint.

All in all, good artwork.

Nice art.

Volume 1 has some nice, evocative b/w line art which is all dark and moody; I could picture many of the subjects appearing in a REH Conan story. Overall, a nice variety of pieces. My only concern is about the licensing terms for use of the art which doesn't seem to be written in very tight, legal language - it grants purchasers permission to use the art in their publications as long as they are not "mainstream publishers" which Skortched Urf' Studios retains the rights to define. In other words, it's not really clear that the S.U. Studios couldn't retroactively deem a publisher to be mainstream and the line between a "mainstream" and "independent" publisher is not easy to define. Thus, I'd be nervous using the images except in fringe products. YMMV.

Dark Fantasy is a hodge podge of different types of illustration that don't necessarily go together with one another save for the 'dark' theme. The file includes instructions on using the illustrations, as well as bookmarks. The weird thing I found about the bookmarks is that they don't do a page by page break down, but rather, an alphabetical breakdown. Confusing if you use the bookmark to get somewhere and look at the bookmark expecting the next illustraton to follow the next bookmark but more of an eye trick than anything else.

The illustrations are heavily detailed in black and white. The art is evocative, but suffers in that much of it is 'busy'. For example, there is an elemental mage whose hands burn with arcane power and whose hooded visage hides his true intentiosn. But in his control of the earth, causing it to break off and float about him, several pieces are right next to him or literaly ontop of him or seemingly to be ontop of him, obscruing some of the figure detail.

The art, in my opinion, tends to work best when its the character, with all of the lovely detail the artist puts into it, in a more visible manner such as the undead gunslinger smoking a cig. There are some background elements like rolling smoke, but they are more in the background and do not overwhelm the character art.

The product also seems such a mash of different types of illustration, that it weakens the overall product. Is a viking warrior dark? If a lion headed shaman dark? By doing stronger themes, I think the artist could have done a product whose overall utility would be easier to determine.

These are relatively minor detractions though and if based on the cover and previews you enjoy the material, you should place an order quickly as the package is currently on slae for $14.99, $5,00 over it's initial cover price.

Mr. Winburn has done a very nice job in capturing the moody essence of 'Dark Fantasy'. I consider the heroes and creatures contained in Volume I to be in the category of 'super-heroic' and many viewers will be inspired by them. What I mean by that, is that most of the dark heroes and villians are mighty-thewed,wielding large weapons of mayhem! And although I prefer my artwork a bit more 'realistic', Mr. Winburn's visions are great stuff indeed! Hopefully later volumes will contain more examples of sorcery-inspired subjects and maybe some scenery as well. We GMs can always use a crumbling ruin or inn interior to show to our players.

The only other suggestion I have is to possibly go with 'themed' volumes: Dragons, Dungeon Denizens, Dark Heroes, etc.
I give Dark Fantasy Volume I, 3 stars out of 5: Good job, sir- looking foreward to more!
