While I do not have that much experience with the mechanics of the game itself, the book itself is something definately worth having. The thing I found the most interesting is the faction mechanics that it has. It may be sci-fi themed, but it can be adapted to any setting with a bit of a work, providing an actual living game world.

Such a well thought out and well balanced game. Mechanically simple enough to pick straight up and play. With enough flexibility to make combat and performing feats interesting and enjoyable.

A must have, not on your bookshelf, but carried with you at all times.

Very good. It's set out in such a way that even beginners would understand it and that veyerans to the genre find it as a usefull tool to build unique role play universes.

If you are looking for good tips on how to create a space sandbox, you should read this book. Even if the ruleset is not your cup of tea, the procedures and advice is great and mostly system-agnostic. Worth infinitely more than the "free" price tag!

This seems like a fairly simple level-based system. I think it is fine for those who want a simpler system, but I didn't find that it had the flexibility and customization that I wanted.

Absolutely fantastic - a really nice system if you like OD&D and the GM's sections on system creation are excellent (and pretty much system agnostic).

Also, the hard cover print of this is a thing of beauty. One word of warning - the print edition contains the extra chapters from the Core edition, but the pdf is just the free edition and doesn't contain the extra chapter on robots and mechs.

I don't like the FATE system, and would prefer not to play a SciFi RPG in an established universe (SW EU, Firefly, etc) and Stars Without by Number is the closest "freeform" universe system you can get that I've found

Game was great, much more open ended than other games i've played (4e , Swords and wizardry) Easy to set up characters with auto-fill character sheet and lots of third party support for world creation ect.

This book is great! 210 free pages of all you need. From a book standpoint it's clear, easy to read and well organized. I am definitely interested in purchasing more material for this system just from a quick read. 5 stars for being a awesome value at an unbeatable price.

To be honest, I've never seen a tabletop sandbox rpg. However I'm impressed. Even if I don't use the system, it's a great supplement to any rpg where you need a way to build worlds.

Thus far this is a great d20 system. I like the sector, world, quest, cult, heresy and npc building tables. Filling in the details or modifying what comes up to remain in theme is easy. I also like the the modular 3 class system. Getting rid of feats and making everything a skill also helps.

Its a lot of extra paperwork, but Factions add a whole new dimension to the RP. If used, crime syndicates, governments, et cetera exist in system. Meaning the players can form or join a faction to achieve objectives of their own (e.g. defeat a faction, save the world, educate the masses, et cetera).

However I do have gripes about the book. The table of contents and index lack detail. So it takes time to find needed material to build characters, sectors and worlds.

Really, wow! For free, absolutely cannot be beat. I look forward to trying this system out. Very cool hybrid of Classic Traveller and old school D&D.

I ordered a hard copy of the star field cover, and it does indeed include all of the content of the alien cover, with the same number of pages as the alien cover. So, order the star field cover hard copy if you like it better than the alien cover, since it does indeed have the same content.

I've owned this game in a hardback form (and it's sister product, the Post Apocalyptic game Other dust) for a couple of years now and I'm still running it.

I won't bother going into a detailed review of the mechanics etc, as there are many others in this review list that does an admirable job of that already.

I'll instead talk about the Longevity of the product. As this is a Sandbox RPG, it provides lots of GM material to generate random content. but in addition to that, Kevin has provided LOTs of free and cheap additional content as well. I have found this REALLY useful in the games I run.

If you get Other Dust, the post Apocalyptic RPG as well, it REALLY opens up the possibilities for even more variety.

I can't recommend this RPG enough if you're into Scifi RPGs and want something that moves really fast and easy to customise.

I run this game in a play by forum post setting, which I feel this is ideal for due to the simplicity of the rules. I also run it at home for my kids, who love it and it really encourages using imagination as I don't feel restricted by the rules.

On top of that, if you're not sure just download the free rules. which only have missing Mech and AI content. Everything else is there.

This is a good role playing game with an interesting background. It seems to have elements that are a blend of a number of experience points/level gaming systems and 'space opera' science fiction storysettings such as ones penned by Larry Niven or 'Star Wars' settings. The character generation system and starship creation systems both seem to be farly straight forward proving that it is possible to create a system that can be operated without a PHD in physics and astro-enineering.

Well done!
