Another set of retro-looking aliens. Whether you want to use them as an invading force on Earth or enemies in a space-faring campaign, the variety of poses and equipment allows you to create scouting teams and infantry squads.

Another great set in the Retro Space line of paper minis. The Imperiax make for good villains in an RPG or elite enemy troops of an alien empire. Multiple poses and weapons allow you to make infantry squads complete with command and support weapons.

Strange Grogge
Publisher: Wessex Games
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/25/2012 18:30:58

This is an interesting game system for pirate skirmishes and other black powder era confrontations, with the option of adding some magic and fantasy elements to the mix. Units have a "Salt" attribute that tends to degrade over the course of battle, making them less reliable (and modeling troop weariness and lost morale.) This does mean that one must track the "Salt" of each unit but that's pretty much all bookkeeping. The basic rules take sixteen pages. There are options to add a "light RPG" layer on top of that, which is great for campaigns. I only wish Wessex Games would release the color version to complement this nice game.

This is a nice game of vehicle mayhem. You build a track with tiles and everywhere not covered by roads counts as off-road/rough terrain. Really fun and fast to play, even solo. The dashboards also add to the game (sure you could write down vehicle stats in a piece of paper, but you lose some ambience.)

QAGS Second Edition
Publisher: Hex Games
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/25/2012 18:16:34

QAGS is a simple and flexible game system. As the authors put it, it is aimed at modeling fiction, so the focus is on character interaction and narrative, rather than simulation. This puts it apart from some other generic RPG systems.

The first four book chapters (28 pages) contain all of the game rules. The rest of the book contains player and GM advice, which is a necessity to make a generic game system accessible to those with less experience with RPGs. There are also useful chapters on modeling different game settings with the rules. The text is written in a conversational, humorous style that is easy to read.

Characters are defined by three fixed, catch-all attributes and at least three freeform ones. This gives a lot of flexibility to create different character concepts. On the other hand, it may require some discussion between players and game master.

There is a uniform resolution mechanic for all actions in the game, with only a slight variation for opposed and unopposed actions. This helps making the rules simple and easy to learn and is coherent with the focus on story instead of number-crunching.

Although there are rules for character advancement, I feel that the game system is better suited for one-shots or short campaigns, where it won't really matter. Still, I'd have to play more to be sure.

All things considered, it was a good purchase.

Last Stand at Kirrinbahr
Publisher: Draken Games
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/20/2012 21:52:52

This is a well-written paragraph-based solo adventure. The difficulty feels right, and the consequences to your actions feel logical. As with most books of this type, once you complete the adventure there isn't much replay value, although I did feel compelled to try again with different character choices. I only wish that they had used hyperlinks in the PDF for those that play it on a computer instead of printing the book.

Sacre Bleu! Skirmish wargame rules for the Age of Pirates, the 17th-18th centuries, and the Napoleonic Wars!
Publisher: AGEMA
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/20/2012 16:09:54

This is a simple set of rules that is only a few pages long and can be learned quickly. Still, it is very dynamic, even a bit chaotic -- which from the author's notes seems to be the intention.

Imagine a skirmish between pirates: you wouldn't expect an organized battle but everyone shooting and fighting any way they can. This is reflected by randomly determined combat phases that give rise to action that is very open to narration and interpretation. Clearly it's not something for competitive play but for friendly games with some beer (or maybe rum!) The book also includes four scenarios with different objectives that might inspire players in creating their own.

The simplicity and the elements of uncertainty make this game suitable for solo play. I've done this and the results were quick, fun battles with very little tweaking of the rules.

Dungeon Walls
Publisher: Avalon Game Company
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/20/2012 16:00:21

This is a set of modular walls and floor tiles. The walls are 2" tall and the tiles are 2"x2", therefore the whole set is particularly useful for creating corridors of various lengths. By grouping more tiles together it's possible to create rooms. The textures are good for both the dungeon and the village versions.

I find it odd that the dungeon door shown in the picture in the product's instructions is different from the one in the printable walls. The instructions also mention a page with the tile and tab templates to be glued to foamboard, but I couldn't find it.

Leviathans
Publisher: Avalon Classic
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/20/2012 11:03:02

This product delivers what it promises: a simple set of rules for battles involving steam war machines and infantry. Infantry is mounted on square stands, with multiple stands per unit, while the machines (whether tanks, walkers or flying units) use different sizes of bases.

The rules are clearly written, and include many examples. The book has a good layout, with only a few typos and pixelated illustrations. The colored background and margins mean that I won't be printing the whole book. It would be great if pages 30 and 31 (infantry table and quick reference) could be provided in black and white, just like they did with the templates. The book also includes three scenarios that are helpful for players to figure how to set up their own.

Bookkeeping during the game is mostly restricted to the war machines, which require a data sheet to keep track of damage, steam output and equipment. A roster sheet could be used for infantry but really, a few markers to track damage is all needed.

The game includes a system to build your war machine, along with some sample builds. It's not overly complicated and allows a lot of variations. The "troop transport" option is the only one that gave me concern, as it is not limited by the war machine's size.

Astral Empires, Starship Design Components Book
Publisher: Avalon Game Company
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/18/2012 12:22:46

I really like this set, since I love modular products. What you get are 76 ship components -- cannons, missiles, cockpits, wings and more, each one in a page. The pieces are 3D rendered models. The fact that they are mostly grey means tinting them with other colors with an image editor is really easy. I can see this being used to design ships for sci-fi RPGs, or to create flat models for starship combat games.

A nice set of paper miniatures in 30mm scale. They have a good amount of detail and the colors look good when printed. I particularly like the lion man with the eyepatch -- great for a recurring villain or anti-hero in an RPG or skirmish game. Reivaj includes a different method of basing figures, although you can also use them in the more common tabbed format too.
