I downloaded this to see the style of the book, as I read a lot of complaints about the actual core book having no art and the style look too, "1980s like" from various reviews. Its free, so who can complain, really?

Downloaded it and I thought the layout was fine and it was an easy read. I rather enjoyed the style and the few pictures. I think most people today are spoiled with the new flashy colored splash book that are annoying to look at.

Now the content itself.. Any person into Trek can basically skip this free download, as I believe its geared more towards people who never experienced the original Trek tv series and maybe jumped into this game from the new recent movies. It doesn't really tell you much more then things you'd know as a Trek fan.

Its basically a nice preview. No rules though.

I think I like this version of Trek better than where they took it over at Paramount. The book is a great intro into the setting and makes me rather eager to delve into the games attached.

Essentially, you have to treat it as fanfic, as there is soooo much outside of the canon here. I mean, seriously, it even includes the CroMags as an alien race...aren't they from SLIDERS?

Still, you can get some fun stuff out of this, and for free I suppose I can't complain.

The best part might be the catalog of other GURPs Star Trek books at the end. :)

Many times we hear that our products are not "Star Trek" and that is why we provided this free introduction to the Star Fleet Universe. While we have a license with Paramount to produce the Star Fleet Universe, it does diverge from Trek canon as much of the history of the SFU was created during the real-life time period after TOS and TAS but before TNG. We hope that this free look will help people make the right choice for their gaming tables so they are not disappointed. The Cromargs are their own species and are part of the Klingon Empire -- and they are just one set of aliens you'll read about in this quick guide. We hope that others will enjoy this book and give our Universe a whirl! We think you'll enjoy it. Jean ADB, Inc. Marketing Director

You should be aware that these rules only incorporate information from the original TV show from the 1960's. None of the information in the movies, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise is included in this game.

Also, the game takes the TV show as a base then goes off in its own direction, which contradicts later shows in the Star Trek genre in some cases.

Overall, I would have to say that I was displeased with the product as a result of these problems. It's a fine RPG, but it's not what I would consider to be "Star Trek".

This product is an excellent introduction into the FASA Star Fleet Battles version of Star Trek, best of all it's FREE!!!

You're given a fairly comprehensive, yet basic, insight into the various species and their societies. You get a very basic and primative galactic map reminiscent of the SFB products of the early 1980s that brought fond memories and even a tear to my eye. The modern gamer will find the map to be quaint and only minimally useful.

You're also given a good overview of all the SFB related products available, making it easy to pick which ones you'll buy and in what order.

I would have liked more content covering the various pewter starship miniatures, however beggars cannot be choosers. Its a free product don'cha'kno?

Thank you for your kind review! We do want to note this if for the Amarillo Design Bureau Prime Directive line, not FASA. :) We are the creators of Star Fleet Battles (our ongoing, richly detailed starship war game). You can see our starship miniatures here: http://store.starfleetstore.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=S The Starline 2500s are slightly larger and more highly detailed minis. The Starline 2400s are more extensive and not quite as detailed. Again, thanks! Jean Sexton, ADB, Inc., Marketing Editor
