This is another excellent scenario and a worthy follow up to The Three Kings. If your group likes action Heroes of the Sea provides varied opportunities to go toe to toe or to sneak & skulk. Hereos of the Sea also builds on the weirdness introduced in The Three Kings with some serious "We're not in Kanzas anymore" moments.

One important thing to note is that the Keeper will need to complete at least a couple of hours of up front work to be able to run this adventure smoothly.

Achtung!Cthulhu's Heroes of the Sea is the second adventure in the Nazi meets Mythos Zero Campaign. However, the events in the previous adventure, The Three Kings, do not directly lead to this adventure, and Heroes of the Sea can be played on its own. Besides the Overview, the adventure can be divided into three additional sections.

Random Encounters: I found this section the most disappointing because it gave the GM the least amount of prep to run an encounter. The encounters will be realistic, and I find these the hardest to roleplay. I highly recommend the GURPS WWII sourcebooks, particularly All the Kings Men, which describes Dunkirk, and Iron Cross, which details Germany's armies. GURPS WWII has some campaign advice for running cinematic vs. gritty WWII adventures.

Plot Episodes: The adventure itself is fantastically creative. "Heroes of the Sea takes place against the backdrop of Operation Dynamo, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) wartime troop evacuations in history. Following the German Blitzkrieg invasion of Belgium and France in May 1940, the combined forces of the British Expeditionary Force (the “BEF”) and the French First Army found themselves surrounded on three sides and in danger of being driven into the sea—a potential loss of almost half a million men." That's right -- Deep Ones. And U-boats. Oh, and a Nazi outpost in the Dreamlands, too. And an underwater archaeology site -- with Nazis. The adventure does a great job integrating these disparate elements together into an adventure.

Appendices: The contents end with appendices for Pregenerated Characters, New Rules, Vehicle stats, Dreamland Creature stats, and Handouts.

On the whole, I preferred this adventure over The Three Kings, although GMs may wish to do more WWII research so he can run the realistic encounters called for in this campaign.

„Achtung!

Erscheinungsbild

Das Design von „Heroes of the Sea“ überzeugt vollauf.

Inhalt

(Kleiner Disclaimer: Ich habe bei diesem Kampagnenmodul Korrektur gelesen.)

„Heroes of the Sea“ ist bereits das zweite Abenteuer aus der „Achtung! Cthulhu“-Kampagne.

Auch als Mythos-Geschichte überzeugt „Heroes of the Sea“ vollauf.

Unsere Bewertung

Erscheinungsbild 5/5 Ansprechend, gutes Design und Layout, reich illustriert. Inhalt 4,5/5 Ein gelungenes Abenteuer, das gerade Geschichtsinteressierten liegen sollte. Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis 2,5/5 Der Preis liegt klar an der Obergrenze dessen, was ein reines Abenteuermodul kosten darf. Gesamt 4/5

WHAT WORKS: The adventure really is very flexible after the opening chapter or two, something I always appreciate. The gradual reveal of the Lovecraftian elements in the campaign continues and it’s a good thing. The alternate openings are also nice, if you don’t want to go the British Intelligence route and/or you want to skip Three Kings. The production values generally look fantastic. Nice ending, setting up the next adventure.

WHAT DOESN’T WORK: A lot of material is repeated in the book, especially the handouts, which are included at the relevant parts of the adventure as well as one of the appendices. Organization didn’t feel quite as tight in this book as it did in the last adventure, though I couldn’t tell for sure if that was layout or writing.

CONCLUSION: Another very good entry in the Zero Point series, continuing the theme of Nazi occultism in World War II/Mythos influence while still feeling very different from the previous adventure. I also deeply appreciate that while the author has things that they assume will happen, notes are provided to help the GM along if the PCs go “off script” (like if they successfully take on the Big Bad of the adventure in Episode 3, or even if they completely skip Episode 3 altogether). Some organizational issues hamper the overall product, in my view, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons, with some nice new rules, cool powers and a fairly open adventure for your money.

The following review was originally posted at Roleplayers Chronicle and can be read in its entirety at http://roleplayerschronicle.com/?p=30113.

Heroes of the Sea is the follow-on campaign module for Acthung! Cthulhu, Zero Point campaign. This particular version was written for Savage Worlds using Realms of Cthulhu from Reality Blurs. Acthung! Cthulhu is set within the midst of World War II taking the action in Europe and giving it a Cthulhu Mythos twist. Heroes of the Sea even incorporates the Dreamlands into the campaign.

OVERALL

Having previously read through the first campaign module using Call of Cthulhu, I find Acthung! Cthulhu lends itself much better to using Savage Worlds than Basic Roleplaying. As an action horror setting and not just an investigative horror setting, the pulp-like features of Savage Worlds help to enhance the action-like features of Acthung! Cthulhu without subjecting the characters to the restrictions of character strength like Basic Roleplaying (due to things like Bennies, Edges, and the ease of rolling over a TN of 4 with higher die types). Not that I don’t like the setting combined with Call of Cthulhu, I just like it a lot more when combined with Realms of Cthulhu and the Savage Worlds core system.

RATINGS

Publication Quality: 10 out of 10 Heroes of the Sea is a wonderful looking publication, albeit a bit slow at times when reading on a handheld device. The layout looks fantastic, the fonts are easy to read, and the general formatting is excellent. There is a lot of great artwork and maps.

Storyline: 8 out of 10 Heroes of the Sea has a good storyline that does an okay job of developing from beginning to end. A lot of additional storyline information could be added or at least additional elements of the surrounding activities could be added throughout the development of that storyline. At times I felt the storyline was progressing too quickly and would have liked too see additional Dreamlands information woven into the that developing storyline.

Desire to Play: 10 out of 10 The entire Acthung! Cthulhu campaign (so far) is an excellent action horror gaming experience. The PCs are thrown directly into the mix of World War II but from a very localized aspect instead of the war as a global feature. In other words, the war is going on all around the PCs, and they have to continue with their efforts without getting caught or killed. It’s a great collection of action with a layer of the Cthulhu Mythos over it. However, it should be noted that the Cthulhu Mythos is not the centerpiece of the series (at least so far), but rather an integral part of everything going on. Thus, the war is as much a part of the campaign as the mythos.

Overall: 9 out of 10 The Acthung! Cthulhu campaign is developing very well so far. The modules are nice and small (not page length, but in focus) considering the grand aspect of being surrounded by a war. In other words, you’re not trying to save the world or stop the war, you are simply a small group of special ops doing specific jobs behind enemy lines.
