So what are relics? Well, relics were introduced in the Genius Guides to Relics of the Godlings I + II and they essentially are Rogue Genius Games' take on magic items that increase in power with your character - and if you know anything about my stance on that topic, then you won't be surprised by me really liking this take. Now unlike Rite Publishing's Legacy Items and Purple Duck Games' Legendary Items, most Relics are inspired by real life mythology, for better or for worse, and increase in power every level.

So what is the Quicksilver Mail? Well, at first, it is a strange, impenetrable orb of silvery metal. Upon tracing the correct symbols on it, though, it becomes a puddle, which, when in contact with a hand, turns into a seamless full-body armor. Unlike many technological items, the armor requires no power and recharges itself. So what does the wielder get apart from information blinking in the periphery of his field of vision? Well, while the mail functions as a masterwork chainmail at first level, this upgrades to becoming a +5 balanced moderate fortification shadow staunching scale mail at 20th level. Beyond that, the armor can also manifest an upgrading shield at higher levels, nets bonuses to Survival and further reduces arcane spell failure. Additionally, it boosts saving throws and allows the wielder to sleep in it comfortably. On a minor nitpick, at 19th level the mail loses +1 for one level due to an upgrade from light fortification to moderate fortification, but I get why this decision was made.

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are very good, I noticed no truly significant glitches. Layout adheres to a printer-friendly 2-column standard with a neat b/w artwork. The pdf does not have any bookmarks, but needs none at this length.

Andrew Marlowe's Quicksilver mail is infinitely more compelling than his last offering, Sequence. Not only does this item, concept-wise, fit perfectly into Iron Gods and similar pulpy environments, it also sports a couple of uncommon benefits beyond a simple, linear accumulation of special armor properties. While personally, I would have enjoyed it if the mail could be donned faster, the shield modified etc., that is only personal preference and should not detract from this cool pdf. A fun, unique item indeed and well worth a final verdict of 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.
