The Desire is a scorned woman who has bootstrapped herself up to become a powerful mover and shaker in polite society. She's out to destroy the people who hurt her, as well as those like her. You can adapt this character rather easily to any setting, and dial her levels of sympathy and sociopathy up or down as needed. A great character, good hooks, good product.
