The Genius Guide to Dream Magic $3.99 $2.23
Publisher: Rogue Genius Games
by Sean H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 05/30/2010 17:41:35
The Genius Guide to: Dream Magic is a 16-page PDF (15 pages if you remove the credits/OGL page) for the Pathfinder RPG written by Owen K. C. Stephens and published by Super Genius Game. This is part of Super Genius Games’ Genius Guide line.

The layout is a screen-friendly landscape design, with cover art and 1-column on the first page and three columns on the rest. The chart of spells is arranged as is traditional for the OGL and easy to read. The art is full color throughout and vaguely supports the dream magic and spell-casting theme of this product.

Dream Magic begins with a discussion about the role of dreams in fantasy and how dream magic has not really been used to anything like it full potential. A very interesting read and not too long and it makes the good point that dreams are already magic of a sort. Several of the spells included having the dreaming descriptor, which is clearly explained, but in general it is used for spells that only effect the dreams of the subject/target.

There is also information on the Dreamscape, the plane of dreams, as a place for adventuring. It provides a good framework for using the Dreamscape as a locale.

Thirteen spells across all levels (but all 7th level or below) and something for most types of casters (bard, cleric, druid and sorcerer/wizard) but bard and sorcerer/wizard get the widest selection. Several of the spells are fairly complex but not to the point that they are unplayable, and most are non-combat spells, a trend in the genius guides that this reviewer appreciates. Though the spells may -in general- be more suiting to more roleplaying-oriented games than combat-oriented games.

Additional class options are provided to support the dream idea: for clerics, a Sleep Domain. A Dreamscape Bloodline option for sorcerers and a Nightmare Specialist school for wizards. Two templates, the Dreamlander, those who live in the Dreamscape, and the Nocnista, a creature that hunts by drawing its prey into the Dreamscape. The product ends with several sources for dream-based adventures.

If the magic of dreaming and the Dreamscape has a place in your campaign give this guide a look.
