Camp Myth: The RPG
von Thomas B. [Fester Rezensent]
Verlag: Third Eye Games
Hinzugefügt am: 07/02/2014 01:01:53
Camp Myth: The RPG WHAT WORKS: The whole concept is awesome, but I particularly love the merit badges. The adventures are very inspirational for guiding you in just what a Camp Myth game IS. Honestly, as "kid" RPGs go, this is one of the few that actually appeals to me to actually RUN. The selection of Mythic Races is great as well, and the bestiary is HUGE and simple to understand and expand upon. WHAT DOESN'T WORK: I was maybe going to say "needs more Merit Badges" (maybe), but there's already a mini supplement out that adds new Mythic Races and Merit Badges. CONCLUSION: I never see Camp Myth bandied about in discussions for kid-friendly RPGs, and I'm not sure why, as I'm fairly convinced it's one of the better kept secrets in RPGs, despite a successful Kickstarter (of course, I didn't even know the books existed before the RPG was announced). The concept is bursting with fun, and Third Eye Games knows how to deliver on good, playable games, making for a very nice combo. If you're looking for a...

Venture City Stories • A World of Adventure for Fate Core

Venture City Stories • A World of Adventure for Fate Core I love fate. Since Core came out I have run and played in a few games. We ran a Kick-Ass Princess game; I won the tournament in a Street Fighter inspired game; Cthulhu was punched in the face by the Kaiju Klown killers; and Dracula was staked on the dance floor, under the disco ball. All great, but something was missing: superheroes. I have been craving a good super game for a while. I liked Icons, hated M&M, and though I adore the system Savage World Supers never felt right. I wanted Fate Core Supers. Icons was close but was a bit unfated (if I can be allowed to totally make up a word). Fate Core, with Supers. It sounds simple and I thought I could make my own hack, now I don't have to. Venture City is Fate with Supers. It is elegant and simple and Fate. I hate cliches, so I'll just say it doesn't remake the ham sandwich. It uses Fate as Fate is meant to be used and doesn't do anything fancy. It doesn't have to. Venture City Stories is the kind of game that makes you feel stupi...

The Genius Guide to More Horrifically Overpowered Feats
von Michael D.
Verlag: Rogue Genius Games

The Genius Guide to More Horrifically Overpowered Feats If the last one was The Complete Loudmouth's Guide to Snubbing Fighters, this one is The Complete Grognard's Guide to Trolling Forums. Not only is the obnoxious tone back in full force, it's now imitating the whiny arguments on Paizo message boards about why Tome of Battle was weeaboo nonsense that ruined D&D forevah. About a third of the Feats here actually suck ("Oversized Fighting" is just Monkey Grip in all of it's underwhelming "do slightly less extra damage than Power Attack" glory) and most of the "humor" is just making fun of Japanese media tropes. There are, as always, some actually good Feats in here that help make Fighters competitive, but they're still buried under an awful attitude....

The Genius Guide to Horrifically Overpowered Feats Should have been called the Complete Loudmouth's Guide to Snubbing Fighters. A good chunk of the Feats presented here are actually not that overpowered (there are a few, but they almost universally benefit spellcasters) and the tone is overall annoying and disrespectful to people who like to play warrior type characters. Not that bad if you want to give Fighters some Nice Things, but the tone is just galling.

Fate Core System

Verlag: Evil Hat Productions, LLC
Hinzugefügt am: 07/01/2014 17:17:59
Fate Core System As a long-time gamer (starting around 1979 or so), there have been just a few games that really got me excited. When I switched from a level-based game to a skill one (D&D to Traveller), to a great universal game (GURPS) and now this. I am convinced this is the best RPG book out today. It''s very well written. Clear, yet entertaining. This is NOT a rules-lite game. It is, however, a rules-are-secondary game. The aspects are an awesome way to keep focused on the narrative. Instead of looking down your character sheet for what you can do, or examining the tactical map for options, you decide what you are going to do, and make it fit into the rules. I just love that. The rules are quite structured as a flexible framework, but within those rules, the sky is the limit. I also love that you can portray great stories in the rules, without the massive preparation required in typical number-heavy games. I am not so sure about the letting the players have so much say in the story and campaign de...

Primal Heroes: The Magus I was quite pleased with the abundance of interesting ideas in this PDF. I really like the flexible progression of the class and the variant turning and rebuking abilities. The artwork and graphic design are fantastic. The overall package is impressive and the price is just silly for this amount of depth. Can’t wait to play a game with all the classes in this series. One happy return customer here!

Little Things: The First Offering
von Rafael C.
Verlag: Black Goat Games
Hinzugefügt am: 07/01/2014 16:21:51
Little Things: The First Offering This nasty little system-agnostic sourcebook features 29 pages of strangeness, including: * New monsters, like the dimension-hopping Krofron -- which, depending on the GM's roll, might be searching for kidneys to harvest or human flesh to eat. Fun details, well-written. * Random tables -- names for villages (Clawpoint), weird secrets ("The candlestick maker uses babies as one of their ingredients"), and random room details ("A young woman named Alzbeta is crying for some reason"). It's vile food for thought. * Cornerstone Keep, a five-page mini-setting with NPCs, info about the region, and disturbing secrets. If you're looking for new grotesquerie to inject into a dark fantasy RPG, you might dig Little Things....

RAVENFELL: Wind & Water Mills
von Chris H. [Fester Rezensent]
Verlag: Fat Dragon Games
Hinzugefügt am: 07/01/2014 16:19:12
RAVENFELL: Wind & Water Mills The models in this collection are beautiful and well-conceived, all the way down to using the same blades for multiple windmill layouts and including optional interior maps for the rectangular mill. The design is so clever that several of the pieces in this set—the main bodies of each mill, primarily—fold down and store flat, or very nearly so. Only one note of caution needs to be attached to this review: these models are fairly complex, and require some degree of modeling (cutting, scoring, and folding) skill and a good bit of patience to assemble. Whether they’re worth the effort depends on how much use you’ll get out of them. If you’re running a game with recurring scenes in a village where such a mill would be useful, and you’ll get to use the mill again and again, it’s well worth it. If you’d just be using a model for a brief visit, the assembly effort might be more trouble than it’s worth. This is not a weakness in the product, just a caveat to make sure that your needs match wha...

ICONS Superpowered Roleplaying: The Assembled Edition
von Chris H. [Fester Rezensent]
Verlag: Ad Infinitum Adventures
Hinzugefügt am: 07/01/2014 11:23:22
ICONS Superpowered Roleplaying: The Assembled Edition Whether you’re a longtime ICONS fan or a new player/GM looking for a relatively rules-light yet richly textured superhero RPG, you’ll welcome ICONS Superpowered Roleplaying: The Assembled Edition. If you’re not familiar with ICONS but are considering a purchase, this book will give you everything you need to get started … except for some six-sided dice, an adventure and friends to play it with. Chapter 1, “The Basics,” starts off by describing ICONS scale, a system of ranking abilities, powers, difficulties, and so on using a scale of 1 to 10 with corresponding adjectives (think of the classic Marvel Super Heroes RPG). Almost everything in ICONS is measured using this scale. Chapter 1 also defines the six ability scores used for ICONS characters, and explains Determination, a kind of in-game currency that players can spend to gain advantages and GMs can award to cause trouble. Fighting, of course, involves the additional consideration of damage and healing, which are addressed here ...

Legend/Deus Vult: Rouen
von Megan R. [Fester Rezensent]
Verlag: Mongoose
Hinzugefügt am: 07/01/2014 11:15:03
Legend/Deus Vult: Rouen Skilfully mixing real-world history with the background of the Deus Vult campaign setting, this is the story of Rouen: trading centre and capital of Normandy, visited from Scandinavian lands as well as from Europe... and with strongholds of the Order as well. Based there or just visiting, there's plenty of atmospheric detail to allow the city to come to life for your players. History, citizens, their amusements, the appearance of the city and the locations within it - they're all here, painted vividly and atmospherically. Naturally the cathedral is described in detail, complete with sufficient material to allow you to describe services even if you are not familiar with the mediaeval Mass. At every turn are notes which can be used to provide incidental events that heighten the role-play and give the feeling of really being there. Of course, as well as the regular merchants, clerics, nobles and everyday working folk, there are others. An occultist hidden away here, the Order's Prec...

The Genius Guide to More Barbarian Talents

The Genius Guide to More Barbarian Talents An Endzeitgeist.com review The expansion for the superb talented barbarian clocks in at 10 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page credits, 1 page SRD, leaving us with 7 pages of content, so let's take a look, shall we? A total of 4 new edges are provided - one to make an animal whisperer (wild empathy, then non-magical charm effect -wrap your head around that!), one to further improve cleaving, one for a mule-style barbarian with more carrying capacity/better str-checks and one to grant immunity versus compulsions, but with the caveat of including a higher-HD-by-4-caveat similarly to how sneak attack versus those tentatively immune to flanking is handled. A total of 24 talents are also part of the deal, covering wild empathy, being able to appraise non-magical objects/getting a kind of pidgin means of communicating simple concepts, speaking with animals of her form while skinwalking at will, one that lets you treat a very select array of weapons as a lighter category, imp...

The Genius Guide to Feats of Spellcasting II
von Megan R. [Fester Rezensent]
Verlag: Rogue Genius Games
Hinzugefügt am: 07/01/2014 10:17:23
The Genius Guide to Feats of Spellcasting II This is a somewhat quirky selection of feats that allows you to put your own twist on a spellcaster. Most do not appreciably add to their overall power, just make him that little bit different from every other spell-chucker in town. My favourite is Named Spells, which is previewed in the opening flavour fiction. It enables a mage to exert power over spells he himself invented (provided he's used his name in their title) even when they are cast by somebody else. If you run a mage who enjoys designing new spells this is definitely one to consider. Others that are quite fun are Retributive Strike, which deals damage to all foes nearby when you are knocked unconscious (and even more if you are killed), and Ring Lord which lets you store your spirit in a ring you have forged if you are unlucky enough to die whilst wearing it. Your spirit can then be raised later, and even before that if someone else is wearing it you can sense what is going on around and even cast the odd spell. Or...

Hornsaw: Forest of Blood Hornsaw, Forest of Blood Black and White PDF, 126 pages This is a scan, which means no bookmarks. It makes navigating the document kind of clunky. The text is legible but feels faded. Page 41 was actually scanned upside-down and nobody caught it. I'm just not a fan of this product.

The Queen of the Lost Valley

The Queen of the Lost Valley Absolutely 5 Stars for me, as for the other B&B titles I have read and played up to now. The Queen of the Lost Valley begins in one of the most popular S&S plot (a map, a lost valley, barbarians, ancient gods) and goes on with more than one twist and a lot of nice ideas (I loved Old Devil!) The adventure is quite long and accurate (more than 60 pages, including opponents' statistics) and it requires at least 3 times to be completed (for the kind of sessions I'm used to, of course) and another 20 + pages are about the Iron Mountains, its people, places of interest and secrets. The quality is excellent. A title highly recommended! Bravo, Mr Pignatelli!...
