Prestige Archetype: The Dragon Disciple
by Thilo G. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Purple Duck Games
Date Added: 12/12/2014 06:31:41
Prestige Archetype: The Dragon Disciple An Endzeitgeist.com review This installment of the Prestige Archetype-series clocks in at 9 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page SRD, ~1/2 a page of editorial, leaving us with 6 1/2 pages of content, so let's take a look! First question - what are prestige archetypes? Well, they are essentially a breakdown of a regular PrC into a full-blown 20-level spanning class - so no, these classes don't necessarily mean that you'll have a universal archetype (wouldn't have worked in this context, I think), instead providing a retooled playing experience so you don't have to work your way up to the PrC via classes you don't want to play. So that's definitely a pro-side. On the con-side, *personally*, I treat PrCs as very much tied to organizations etc., emphasizing the "prestige"-component as opposed to archetypes, which are more traditions in my game. I'm not the target audience of these books, but I will take a stab at them anyways. All right, the Dragon Disciple receives 3/$ BAB...

Underworld Races: Draaki
by Thilo G. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: AAW Games
Date Added: 12/12/2014 06:26:49
Underworld Races: Draaki An Endzeitgeist.com review This supplement clocks in at 20 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page ToC, 1 page SRD, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 15 pages of content, so let's take a look! As with the other installments of the Underworld races-series, this one kicks off with a massive mythology of the subterranean races, a collective origin history that can be potentially transplanted from Aventyr into other settings, should one choose to do so. So what are the Draaki, wait don't tell me - "descendant from dragons-blabla", right? Wrong! Yeah, I was surprised as well. Indeed, the now nameless race that was to turn into the Draaki once enslaved the primal dragons, now looking deceptively like their erstwhile slaves. If you want the whole story, though - then check out this pdf. Onwards to the mechanical side of things - Draaki receive +2 to all physical attributes and -4 to wisdom, making them too geared towards martial endeavors for my tastes....

Hyperborean Mice
by Brian P.
Publisher: Kiz and Jenn Press
Date Added: 12/11/2014 22:38:08
Hyperborean Mice Summary: It's Conan crossed with Redwall. Hyperborean Mice is a game of swords and sorcery, with all the trappings and tropes that entails. It has an ancient, crumbling empire only a generation or so from disintegration or unlikely renewal, inbred fueding nobility, dirty peasants, barbarians at the borders, dark cults of forbidden gods, ancient ruins of a dead civilization, horrific monsters in the wilds, mysterious places, and adventure. All of it as performed by talking mice and rats. It sounds odd, but anyone who has read Redwall or its sequels knows that it's entirely possible to take the premise of talking animals completely straight and still make a compelling and somewhat grim story out of it, and Hyperborean Mice does that elegantly. While reading it, I was never taken out of the mood or stopped and thought "wait, these are mice." As the book says, the rules and setting could work just as easily with humans with minimal tweaking. As it is, everything works. Owls are dr...

47 Ways to Create Great NPCs for Your Campaigns
by Paul S.
Publisher: Blackstone Entertainment, Inc
Date Added: 12/11/2014 21:19:56
47 Ways to Create Great NPCs for Your Campaigns I have purchased from Blackstone Entertainment before and the "47" line, and have been very happy with the products. So when I saw this one, I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately I saw a critical review and was a little timid at first, but decided to order based on my previous purchases, and man I am glad i went with my gut. This is a must have and probably the best supplemental line for RPG's I have ever bought. It is full of 47 different ideas to make every NPC different and Unique whether you choose them randomly or on purpose. I have personally purchased the other publishing that a previous reviewer mentioned, and I can say this one is much better and more thoroughly detailed than a simple 3 line NPC. The supplement gives the DM the needed ideas to make an NPC stand out and really pop to give the players a feeling about a certain NPC. I cannot wait to use this is my next campaign. Keep up the great work. P.S. Motivation and Ambition are not the same thing....

47 Ways to Create Great NPCs for Your Campaigns This is a very well-written guide. I found most if not all of these make creating believable NPCs much easier. I didn't find any of these suggestions on NPC creation redundant; each one had specific information to help you add flare. I also like that they're up front and tell you to pick and choose only those sections you want to use, and not to burn yourself out trying to come up with waaaay too much like I've done a time or two :)

Slumbering Ursine Dunes
by Steven W.
Publisher: Hydra Cooperative
Date Added: 12/11/2014 17:37:50
Slumbering Ursine Dunes Quirky and idiosyncratic, this sandbox-y setting reminds me a lot of the sword-and-sorcery fiction of the 60s and 70s, with a faint resemblance to Moorcook and Bakshi along the way. The area could be explored and rushed through is a few sessions, or an imaginative GM could spin things out much longer. I liked everything that was here, but came away with a vague feeling like something was missing. The four factions that occupy the Dunes could all use some additional development, and some additional plot elements setting them in motion would really make this a 5 star product in my opinion. I would easily rate this 4 1/2 stars if I could....

Adventure Notes

Adventure Notes The obvious question about this is simple: why get this when there's a ton of free graph paper online? Or even just a sheet ripped out of a spiral bound notebook? The answer is equally simple: for a few shekels you get a pdf that is formatted a notch better than the free alternatives. If you're running games, you might as well keep your notes in a better format. These have the simplicity and flexibility of planner pages, and are well suited for the purpose they are intended. And in the end, with a simple product like this, that's the best possible praise: they fit the task better than alternatives....

47 Ways to Create Great NPCs for Your Campaigns
by AARON N.
Publisher: Blackstone Entertainment, Inc
Date Added: 12/11/2014 15:58:16
47 Ways to Create Great NPCs for Your Campaigns A scattershot list of 47 pieces of information to include in an NPC write-up. 9 pages made up of an introduction and 47 paragraphs, each devoted to a category of information about your NPC. That's worth $1, I suppose, or could be, with a little more work. Filling out all 47 categories (even combining those that are redundant, such as Picture, Appearance, and Face, as well as Motivation and Ambition), is more than you'll ever need. It would be better if the items were grouped into to domains, something like Social and Personality, just to make them more useful. I think Johnn Four's 3 Line NPCs is a better value if you need help with making NPCs. One should beware a whole product line of lists of 47 items--expect that many of the items will be filler, even if 47 (the Star Trek number) is the best of all numbers you could choose....

The Mutant Epoch
by Christopher T.
Publisher: Outland Arts
Date Added: 12/11/2014 13:42:33
The Mutant Epoch As a game collector with fascination for the post-apocalyptic genre, I've got a ton of rpgs in my library, from classics like Gamma World and Aftermath to the more obscure titles such as Waste World. I've read and enjoyed them all, but I don't think I've ever encountered or played one as enjoyable as The Mutant Epoch. For me, this truly is the best post-apocalyptic game on the market. The old school approach to the game mechanics appeal to my sensibilities, and the rules are flexible enough to survive any tweaks I need to make for own campaign requirements. And as for the content of this single book, I can only say I'm truly impressed. There's plenty of skills, a vast arsenal of weapons and armor ranging from the primitive and improvised to the highest of tech, and a broad enough array of monsters, robots and hazards to keep any group of players on their toes. With the tools this book provides, you'll easily have enough material to create and run any number of campaigns. Give this g...

Naval Encounters

Publisher: Metal Weave Games

Naval Encounters I found this book to be fascinating. Walters crafted a superior product using both an informative and easy-going writing style. This is a piece which is accessible to both novices players as well as more experienced Ninth World game masters alike. The piece goes into great detail how both naval encounters can come about, their importance in a given campaign, and all the equipment surrounding them. A listing of GM intrusions, Descriptors, and Foci are contained here as well. Though this may sound like a lot of ground to cover, the book doesn't bog the reader down with too much detail or technical information, giving the relevant information which the GM needs to help explain how to incorporate them into gameplay. A concise and highly recommended book for maritime Numenera !...
